Think of the hyphen as a horizontal life preserver.

I know that smeds.

You were remarking on mergers. Maybe you were jabbing at Pat?

I'm shuddering with every post that hyphenates Maine Maritime. Maine Maritime and Wisconsin Lutheran (which I have seen many times) are not hyphenated. They are not the University of Wisconsin at Lutheran or a merger of schools named Maine and Maritime. :)

Or the University of Maine at Maritime. As smeds said, I defy anyone to find the municipality of Maritime, ME on any atlas or online map. Nor is it, a la Wisconsin-Stout, a University of Maine branch campus that was named after someone named Maritime.

And there's no State of Alfred! :)

Sure there is. Whenever Batman's battling the Joker, the Riddler, or Bane, I'm sure that Alfred's in quite a state of anxiety.

Think of the hyphen as a horizontal life preserver.

Or as a little ship floating on a calm sea.

The hyphens are used to denote branches and the locations of the branches- like UMass-Dartmouth, Michigan-Dearborn, our beloved Penn State branches or Wisconsin-Oshkosh. When I see Maine-Maritime I think of the University of Maine located in a town called Maritime.

Mass Maritime and NY Maritime aren't hyphenated either.

Oh, but they should be.  How else do we know these aren't some fanatical pirate schools that just happened to be located in a particular state?

Also, I know they're trying to be diplomatic, but they need to stop using the hyphens for the main campus.  Not everyone knows what town the main campus is in.

I don't see hyphens for the main branch.  All I see is Michigan, Minnesota, or Wisconsin (or others).

Indiana uses "IU-East" or "IU-Kokomo". They also have IUPUI and IP-Fort Wayne for their co-located universities that have both Indiana and Purdue programs on campus.

Fun fact, the folks at IUPUI were SERIOUSLY agitated when Indiana Central became the University of Indianapolis. They wanted that moniker...

I see Michigan-Ann Arbor all the time, but the worst is Maine-Orono.  Who, outside of Maine, knows that's the main campus?

I never see EITHER one and I consume box scores and agate like you wouldn't believe...I don't think that's prevalent AT ALL.

I think you give people too little credit. I knew Maine was in Orono. It's a common crossword puzzle answer!

I only see UW-Madison because I have friends from Wisconsin who have ties to the Madison campus and a branch.

From Mainewiki

Maine Maritime was founded in 1840 when Sir. Joseph Maritime sailed into Penobscot Bay looking for the mouth of the Penobscot River.  In a blanket of coastal fog, Mr. Maritime crashed his schooner into Otter Rock Shoal near the mouth of the Bagaduce River which for some reason is not in New Jersey.  Needing repairs on his vessel and being a man of great wealth he decided to build an entire school based on sailing vessels.  When discussing names for his school his hearty crew suggested Maritime College.  Sheepishly Mr. Maritime accepted the gracious honor his well paid, and stranded, crew had bestowed on his great college.  Later Maritime College joined the full force of the mighty Maine University system still bearing Sir Joseph Maritime's name today.  Maine-Maritime.1

Well, then, I have to concede the point. After all, who can argue with mainewiki?

My original pick for winless was going to be Alfred State.  But the fighting Alfred's are still provisional.  So I was late picking Maine Maritime.

Alfred State has dropped its first 4 games by 25, 18, 20 and 27 after losing to SUNY-Maritime tonight.

Up next for them might be this years top match-up for winless candidates when they take on D'Youville @ RIT tomorrow afternoon.  D'Youville lost its two games in the Northwest by 54 and 41 to start the year.

Alfred State v D'Youville......mark it down.

Mr. Ypsi

Alfred St vs. D'Youville has already been marked down - WAY down! ;D

7express

In a battle of unbeaten 7express's Western Connecticut Colonials come back from a halftime deficit to knock off Magicman's undefeated Plattsburgh State Cardinals.  Good game between the two this evening.

sac's Maine no hyphen Maritime Mariners goes down winning, as they defeat the Maine hyphen Augusta Moose in back to back years, this time by a whopping margin of 30 points, 103-73. Wow... Maine no hyphen Maritime hitting the century mark...whoda thunk it. :o
