I bet it was a great one-on-one duel when Paul Quinn beat Philander Smith.

I've always thought that it was one of the great tragedies of college athletics that Philander Smith College chose not to call its sports teams the Philanderers.

Obviously not as cool as the Philander Smith Philanders would have been, but I was at a high school in Connecticut called RHAM (pronounced as R-A-M like the animal) how cool would it have been for them to be called the RHAM Rams??  I think they blew it there!

sac

RHAM Trucks would have been good also.

A couple schools I can think of that have taken the opportunity for good matching names are the Stetson Hatters and Boston Terriers

Mr. Ypsi

When Eastern Michigan University gave in to NON-Huron protesters (the Hurons wanted them to keep the name), they switched to a mascot which SHOULD BE offensive to Native Americans ('Eagles' are sacred to many tribes, besides being totally trite); the obvious choice was to be the 'Emus'.

Alas, EMU never did listen to me. :P

I wonder if ANY team has an emu as its mascot. That might have been their best chance!

That would've been perfect, since the color of an emu egg is pretty close to the shade of dark green used by Eastern Michigan athletics:

Plus, emus are pretty badass. I certainly wouldn't want to get kicked by one.

Nope:

http://www.smargon.net/nicknames/

You can find some beauties in there though!

Double fail on the part of Eastern Michigan, since not only are there no other colleges with the Emus nickname, there are no colleges that are nicknamed after any ratite. Thus, there are no teams called the Ostriches, the Cassowarys, the Kiwis, or the Rheas, either, much to the impoverishment of intercollegiate athletics.

Hey, if an entire country can adopt the informal nickname of Kiwis for its inhabitants, then it's certainly good enough for an American college or university.

How unfortunate that Creighton University decided not to call its teams the Barrels.

Man, a cassowary is such a BAD ASS bird I think they'd be a great mascot.

Crikey!

You'd have to find the meanest guy in school to do justice to the mascot costume if your team was called the Cassowaries.

Maybe the colleges in the US don't think much of any ratite, but here in my area of Northern New York there are 4 small school districts that combined to form a track team since none of the 4 were big enough to have a competitive team on their own. They also combine to form a tennis team and a swimming team. The schools are Elizabethtown, Keene, Westport, and Moriah. The team is known as EKWM and their mascot is none other than the largest bird in Australia, the Emu. The schools have struggled to to field a track team and have to overcome problems that other schools don't run into but they have persevered and done quite well. Here's a great article about the Emus that was written this past April. Some kids still go the extra mile.  ;)

Greek Tragedy

My sister-in-law lived in western Wisconsin and it took several small communities to form a school. The little towns were Gale, Ettrick and Trempealeau. So, she went to G.E.T. High...and no, there wasn't a guy runnning around in a joint outfit with smoke coming out of his head.

I love that Whittier is both winless and unbeaten vs. D3.  :o It's unfortunate it will end tonight.  :(
