So in the survivor pool, no changes last night

we are left with

Undefeated
Amherst   Magicman
Babson     hopefan
Whitman   Augie 77
Swarthmore   Hoopsfan

Winless
Franciscan     Magicman
Curry      Sac
Washington and Jefferson   Greek Tragedy

In the overall numbers

Undefeated teams decreased from 22 to 20 with losses by Whitworth and Brockport

Winless teams went from 25 to 23 with wins by Alfred State and Rockford

Undefeated vs D3 only went from 4 to 3 with a loss by Concordia (Wisc.)

Winless vs D3 only went from 10 to 11 as Alfred State was added (They beat Davis)
The only thing not to be liked in Florida is no D3 hoops!!!

You know we're all biased - all of us - because none of us picked Marietta in the undefeated pool. We should be punished severely.

Coin flip for me between Wooster-Marietta, they played early but I liked them both.  Should have called tails.

Franciscan managed to lose to PSU-Altoona tonight 83-66

Baron von Stuebie dropping a game by 17 isn't all that amazing of an accomplishment, but losing a game  by 17 you lead by 13 with 16 minutes to play is quite impressive.

What's really sad is that they had scored 50 points at that 16 minute mark you mentioned. The score was actually 50-37 with 16:33 left to play. Over the next 13 minutes and 45 seconds they scored 6 points and Altoona scored 39. Franciscan scored as many points in the final 2:47 of the game...10 points, as they did in the previous 17:13 of the 2nd half. ??? :o

But that's why I selected them in the Winless Pool.

Well, Swarthmore made it through two difficult games by the skin of their teeth and don't play again until the 17th.  If Babson wins tonight, as expected, they're off until the 31st.  Whitman has Wooster on the 18th.  I guess my chances aren't as good as I thought.

The survivor pool stays the same... we know it will decrease by 1 tonight when Amherst (Magicman) hosts Babson (hopefan)..

Overall

Undefeated decreases from 20 to 19 as Catholic loses to St. Vincent

Winless deceases from 23 to 21 as Knox (over Monmouth) and Mt Aloysius (over Pitt Greensburg) win

Undefeated vs D3 only stays at 3

Winless vs D3 only decreases from 11 to 8 as Maine Presque Isle (over Colby!!!!!), Depauw, and Merchant Marine win
The only thing not to be liked in Florida is no D3 hoops!!!

hopefan,

My condolences. Both teams looked like they had the game won on several occasions. We didn't get shortchanged watching this one. I feel kind of guilty moving on because I was sure Amherst had lost at the end of regulation and at the end of the first OT.  McCarthy's three pointers were as clutch as they come. I was yelling at Dawson to pass the ball at the end because I knew he was going to take it to the hoop and I was afraid he would get stuffed again. Timed it just right.

End of regulation
Note to Babson Coach, up 3, 7 seconds, defending, ....let clock run down and FOUL, don't give up a relatively undefended, in stride 3 point attempt

end of 1st OT.... I don't like seeing BEST player, with 10 seconds left in tie game, with ball in his hands, waiting for clock to go down... why?  because, he'll make move, all defense will go at him, he'll give ball up, and less qualified scorer will end up taking shot.  I saw Webster lose to Wash U lose like this, and it happened to Babson.. when Flannery made the pass, the player who received it looked like he was in a state of shock.. no wonder he missed...

I didn't bother watching 2nd OT... I KNEW I was a dead duck...  Go get 'em Magic!!

They did give their 6th foul in regulation, but they did it with 7 seconds left, 80 feet from the basket.  You could've given them another two or three dribbles and still fouled without a shot attempt.  That would've prevented even getting as good a look.  Pretty small error for such a big game, though.

Hoops fan.. no I meant foul and put them on the line with a 7th foul... I'm still a believer that it is far more difficult to get the ball back for a shot after shooting 2 fts, putting you down one or two points in that situation....

I get it, but they might not have even needed to get there if they'd waited a little for the 6th.  It would've made the final shot a lot harder to set up.

You both have valid points. I've always been a believer that if you're up 3 points with seconds to go in the game you put the other team on the line. Seen the other team bury a 3 pointer to tie the game and win in overtime too often to keep track of. Only remember one instance where the team, down 3, gets fouled, goes to the line, makes the first one, misses the 2nd one (on purpose), shooter gets the rebound and scores to tie the game. And yes that was the end of the 2nd overtime of Amherst against Middlebury on 2-12-13. Amherst won in triple OT. Willy Workman was the player that pulled off that bit of magic.

In this case Babson had to commit a 6th, then 7th foul to do so. I was pretty sure my chances of continuing to be alive in the Undefeated Pool were over and done. I fully expected, with the 3 point lead, that Babson would put Amherst on the line and there would be no way for them to score 3 points and tie the game. When they fouled for the 6th time I knew it was coming. Lightning wasn't gonna strike twice, (no Willy Workman) especially since I needed it to do so. And then they let McCarthy get his shot off.

I mentally thanked the Babson coach for not committing that 7th foul, at least 3 times, after the game was over.
