I think having their starting backfield both returning will be a big boost for the Cardinals.   Their website also has a record book for the Naperville school. http://www.noctrl.edu/Documents/athletics/fb_record_book.pdf  Interesting stuff, especially when you see that a good percentage of those records have come since Thorne has been coach.  Even if you take away Kniss records at QB, a lot of people on the record lists are still pretty recent.

One of Augustana's first place votes must have come from Swider.  It would be interesting to know who made the second first place vote for Augie.

I remember when playing a few years under DeGeorge (the other two under Thorne)  that he would get so damn excited about all of Ryan Jordan's PUNTING records.   I don't think he ever understood that those were not good records to own,   such as

Most punts in a game, season, career...etc.

Our offense was option left, option right,  pass, punt...  We had it down to a science.

When thorne came, we started passing on 1st down, catching defenses off guard, resulting in big plays and hence, almost every single receiving record has happened since JT took over.

Defensively, I think the statisticians have kept their eyes open more in the last 10 years..

Interesting since I thought they ran a 1 back offense last year.

Mostly they do, but they also run a two back shotgun and the Maryland I in certain situations.

Also...Isreal is the back that spells Sulo now and then, he has good speed but suffered through some fumblitis early in his career that has hurt him in the eyes of the coaches IMHO

Redmen96

Warden Hazen:   How do you think we'd do against the pros?
Paul Crewe:   That team against the pros?
Warden Hazen:   Yeah.
Paul Crewe:   Well, you'd have a real problem.
Warden Hazen:   Well, how do you think we'd do against the cons?
We will always be REDMEN

Speaking of injuries, the worst 2 I've seen:

#1 - Playing pick-up football (no pads obviously) a buddy of mine went low to tackle another buddy.  The runner flipped over and started screaming... broken femur!  To make matters worse, the bone broke completely and bone marrow started to enter his blood stream almost resulting in death.

#2 - 1996.  Wheaton CB Nakia Jordan mistakenly grabs IWU RB Deion Hornsby facemask and brings him down - dislocated hip!  I believe Deion was in traction for a few weeks after that.

Side note... as much as I couldn't stand them (hey, I'm making progress... I few years back, I would have used the word "hate") I wonder how that 96 Titans team would have done against Mount if they had Hornsby.  He was a difference maker!  Dana Smith was a fine replacement, but he's a Mike Alstott type... you can't replace speed!

Also... last page, Mugsy brought up the sun-dial... the Wheaton coaches always had to bring that out whenever it was time for me to run the 40.

Injuries:

My sophomore year against Benedictine:

I'm playing LG, Will Braga is C, and Dusty Wicks is RG and we proceed to injury 2 starting  and I think 1 reserve DT for BU, one had his arm like completely messed up pointing in strange directions.  There was like a half hour of game stoppage for these kids...it was horrible.

If those guys ever check the board or post they can tell you for sure...that was a strange game on the interior line.  One of thier LB's ended up having to play DT.

When I was at Wheaton, we had a receiver that was soooo slow his nickname was 'Glacier'.

I'll still never forget how fast the trainers got to Hornsby.  The place went dead silent.

Congrats to Steve Thonn, one of Mugsy's teammates
http://rampagefootball.com/news/pressreleases/index.html?article_id=4650

Mugsy didn't play w Thonn but his older brother did. I think they called his older brother "Stump". so "Mugsy" and "Stump" were both outside LB's on the team formerly known as Crusaders.

Steve Thonn was one of the best d3 recievers I have ever seen. a great player and he was a founding player in the arena league. has been coaching since his playing days ended. a great guy and offensive mind.

Again just a few years ahead of me... though I remember seeing almost every football game he played, because my brother was at Wheaton at the time.

Perhaps the best pure all around athlete ever from Wheaton...

How many athletes can say they were All-American in 3 sports at the collegiate level?  Steve was an All-American in football, basketball and baseball.
