Find out where the Millikin Big Blue nickname really came from here.

Ah, yes... with the entry into the CCIW schedule comes the creative, insightful, investigative, hard-hitting reporting from matblake on the "true" source of the mascot of Wheaton foes.

My influences are Hard Copy, Entertainment Tonight, Tom Skilling, and Cheaters.

Yes, the passing defense better gel or there are some long games ahead. But the assumption I made about going to a 3-3-5 defensive scheme is that you believe that the strength of your team is the defensive secondary.

Good point midwest.  From the sounds of it, the throw that got picked off which led to the 14 yard drive was questionable too.  I did try to point out that it could have been slanted because it was the press release from WashU.  Seems like the passing defense might still need to gel for the Cards although they did seem to do alright against lesser competition like Benedictine and Concordia-Wis.

Did Coach Lester bring that system with him to Naperville or was that the base defense they have been using recently?

He brought it with him

Thanks.  It  seems like defensive guys are really committed to their system.  Commentators and news guys always make a big deal of when teams switch to a 3-4 from a 4-3 or vice versa and how it can create problems with personnel used to the previous system. I don't see why this defensive switch should be any different, I'm sure there is a learning curve.

I agree with you but it doesn't work in this instance. Tim Lester is an offensive coach. he was a qb at Wheaton South, western michigan, an offensive coordinator at elmhurst (along with a few other offensive coaching spots--even 1 year as a head coach) and this is his first defensive assignment.

Good point.  I still think that it would be expected to be on a learning curve for the new defensive scheme though.  Could be why 100% of WashU positive yards came on the pass.

Offensive? What did Coach Lester ever do to you?   ;D  :D  ;)

Thanks very much, I'll be here all week.

great article on Ittersagen from Wheaton on front page and in "around the midwest"

It's nice to see Ittersagen is back on the field at Wheaton and doing well.  I hope he has a great season.
12-0 = 13

My picks for the season:

Wheaton 7-0 (too deep and too talented to lose now)
Augie 6-1 (experienced offensive line and veterans abound)
Elmhurst 5-2 (this will be the surprise of the season. The bluejays are healthy and a veteran group returns. Journell will show his plan is working)
Carthage 3-4 (a little too young on offense to get back in the hunt)
Naperville 3-3-5 (what were you expecting?)
IWU 3-4 (green ain't mean compared to red)
NPU 1-6 (off my schneid and into the fire)
Millikin 0-7 (neihbur can't do it alone)

The silence from the Naperville faithful is deafening. I would be interested in any eyewitness reports from the game Saturday night. any takers?

I must confess that I haven't watched a game in a year...my comments are limited to petty and sarcastic observations of other people's comments.  I really need to start my own lawfirm.

Although...I did make mention of being nervous about Lester taking over the defense and having little to no coaching experience on that side of the ball....prophetic?

I'm still amazed at a stupid play call that cost NCC the game!  >:( >:(

Here's the play by play of the series in question in the 4th quarter:

N 1-10 N22   NORTH CENTRAL (ILL.) drive start at 04:33.
N 1-10 N22   Sulo, Dominic rush for 9 yards to the NCC31 (Machan, Tim).
N 2-1  N31   Sulo, Dominic rush for 3 yards to the NCC34, 1ST DOWN NCC
                  (Gialessas, Nick;McSparin, Tyler).
     N 1-10 N34   Sulo, Dominic rush for 2 yards to the NCC36 (Sensenich,Brent).
N 2-8  N36   Kniss, Kyle pass intercepted by Mulholland, Dan at the NCC33,
Mulholland, Dan return 19 yards to the NCC14 (Sulo, Dominic).

Wash U had ZERO timeouts left.   The clock was stopped at 2:36 after the interception.  Could someone smarter than me(which is pretty much everyone except Mugsy!  :P), explain to me why they would do this?   Two years ago NCC threw a pass against Wheaton late in the game that iced the game, but was very risky and I was highly critical of it even though it worked.  Well, I guess things even out, because this move cost NCC the game!!!!

Hey that looks like the play by play from when I played.   :-[

I also noticed in the picture on his wrist he has written "1" in honor of his injured comrade Zack Ullrich.

Any update on Zach, Mr. See?

just what i posted a few pages back from swider on the pregame radio. apparently he wants to play again and is in rehab as well as seeking out additional medical opinions.  a few weeks at least and game over at worst. full recovery though which is the most important thing.

From what I observed of Wheaton qb's in the Hope game was poise and good decisions.  They also had week to prepare to start and run the 1st team so they made good with getting themselves ready for first night game.  The interception came when the reciever slipped  on the cut and fell, not the passer's fault.  They both looked good in the pocket and I can't remember who said Bradley was not very mobile (I think they said he was a pocket passer) could not have been more wrong.  He looked good in the pocket and on the run.
Running game looked good but please no option pitch, more risk than reward and only time I saw it went for a 6 or 7 yard loss.
Rowson's return also was no small part in the offense success.  O-line really came to play and they paved the way for the run game.
Now everyone will get to see the new "multimillion"dollar scoreboard/diamond vision screen to be unveiled for Homecoming weekend vs Milikin
Great pictures from game too,  looked really cool at night so hideous train track background was blacked out.

I haven't gotten an update on whether Ullrich has returned to the Chicago area yet.  When and if I do I will post it.
Now to Bradley.  I don't know much about him, but I do know that he has all the skills to be a very productive QB.  The biggest problem is that Wheaton has really been planning their offense around Ullrich's skills.  Bradley and Ullrich are not the same QB in that Ullrich is great on his feet.  It will be interesting to see what changes the staff at Wheaton makes to give Bradley more time in the pocket.  I imagine there will be more runs and quick, short passes.  The nice thing is that Hope doesn't look very good this year.  Hopefully this will allow Bradley to get his feet wet before being faced with the stiff competition in the CCIW.
Ok I found the mention about Bradley ok. nogloves called it right Kyle got his feet wet and good the pump fake really sold the bomb to Fossum.
