Great win for TitanNation in Btown yesterday. IWU's defense has stepped up. No matter what happens the rest of the way I am officially concerned for Wheatons trip to to Btown on the second Saturday in November.

I am really surprised at the success NPU had against the NPU defense. I think it shows primarily that NPU is making excellent strides in closing the talent gap they have long suffered in the CCIW, but even more I think it shows that the Naperville School's defense is more suspect than I thought. I wonder if they have significant injuries on defense?

Needless to say, it's bell week and we can let the festivities begin.

This is what we  have been waiting for...

NORTH CENTRAL   24
Billy Grahams School   14

Wash U 16
North Central 13

Wheaton 55
Wash U   14

I don't know where those 24 points are going to come from.

Not sure either...but hopefully the cards can force some turnovers...you and I both know that turnovers can change a game and the better team can end up losing.

Wheaton upto #5 in the latest top 25.

North Central drops out of the top 25... guess win against North Park doesn't carry much weight compared to wins by those behind them.  John Carrolls win over Baldwin-Wallace for one...

As expected after a loss, Augie & Carthage no longer receiving votes.

So, North Central should be lucky to stay within what, 30 points this week? No offense, no pass defense. And now the Wheaties have a Megatron at their disposal. :D :D :D

Well, the game at Langhorst Field was pretty sloppy, however when you look at the each team's defense,  you can understand why.  Both teams have very solid d-lines which caused 2-3 of the turnovers for each team.  I don't think I have ever seen a game with 11 total turnovers, but again that is a credit to the penetration and nimble secondaries.

IMO, there are 2 things that allowed Elmhurst to come from behind and win.  1) Kudyba and the offense found that rhythm in the 4th quarter when they had to.  Both team's defenses were on the field for extended periods with little/no rest,  and finally the Jays offense started to move the ball.
2) Carthage shot themselves in the foot way too often.  When it was 15-14 and Carthage had scored 15 unanswered,  Elmhurst had no momentum and was in danger of having Carthage running away.  The interceptions and fumbles really cost Carthage a chance to steal a road victory.

For a defensive guy, this was a great game to watch.  Both team's defensive lines were tatooing the QB, penetrating and getting those TFL's, and made the offense look bad.

Tailgater- Great to hang out with you and your family before the game.  Thank you again and best to Carthage always.  You guys have a great defense and should fare well in the CCIW.
Elmhurst and Augustana next week.  Can't wait.  Elmhurst has hung close to Augie the last 2 years and have had their chances.  With a great D-Line and some nimble LB's I think Elmhurst has a great chance to get a victory in Rock Island.
Congrats to IWU on the big win over Augie.  Coincidentally IWU fans, my color analyst and I did touch on the fact that IWU is the only CCIW team with a winning record vs. Augie.  Though, Wheaton is sealing the gap with AC.

Umm... wouldn't one of the defenses be on the field at all times?   :P

Hehe, yes.. Carthage was staring at a 14-0 deficit, when the Redmen's D, clamped down and had the Elmhurst defense on the field for a LONG time.  That enabled the Redmen to make it 15-14.  However, late in the game it was the Carthage defense that seemed to fatigue a bit as EC's Wilharm was starting to run more effectively between the tackles.  Carthage's offense started to struggle in the 4th allowing Elmhurst to come back.

Trying to get stats on the North Central/North Park game.  Website seems to be down or it is not recognized?

I see Ittersagen had another 12 tackles today along with 4 pass break ups.  Anyone at the game that can tell me why are they even throwing at him 4 times?  Were those stats inflated?  I would guess that going away from him would be a better idea, but that is an observation that most anyone could make.

I strongly doubt the stats are inflated... I've been surprise how much teams have been throwing to Ittersagens side all year.

One other stat I'm not too thrilled with... Wheaton QB's were sacked 7 times today.  Not good at all.

from CCIW website...

PASSES DEFENDED    Team Cl  G Brup  Int Total Avg/G
---------------------------------------------------
1. Ittersagen, P.. WHEA JR  3    7    3    10  3.33
2. Langs, Tyler... WHEA SO  3    4    1     5  1.67
    Paul, Dane..... ELMH FR  3    2    3     5  1.67
4. Estell, JR..... NPU  JR  3    3    1     4  1.33
    Lynch, Billy... AUGI JR  3    4    0     4  1.33
    Weil, Josh..... NCC  SR  3    2    2     4  1.33
7. Maple, Kyle.... ELMH SR  3    2    1     3  1.00
    Osburn, Bo..... IWU  SR  3    3    0     3  1.00
    Fortney, Brad.. CART FR  3    3    0     3  1.00
    Slette, Mark... AUGI SR  3    1    2     3  1.00

This was as of last weeks game...

Those are impressive numbers.  All-american numbers I would say.  Add 4 pass breakups to that stat.

Is Studebaker seeing double or triple teams this year?

Triple teams...  I'll play 10 on 8 any day.  Just for the record, no offensive coordinator purposely designs a triple team against one player.

Mr. Ypsi

Sorry to gloat so belatedly (I was camping this weekend), but if you check the pickems, there was exactly ONE of us who was not surprised by the IWU-Augie result!  I tell you, that is a TITLE-contending defense, though (as also, alas, predicted) the special teams ALMOST managed to blow it.

Since they seem incapable of fixing the errors, I will be amazed if they actually seriously contend for the title, but am preparing early to gloat at those who picked them for 0-2 wins (which, unless I forgot a post, means ALL of you)! ;D

and besides that...i believe Chuck Norris saw quadruple teams when he was in 4th grade playing on his varsity team.

2nd POW for ittersagen (this one for Defense), well deserved for Sulos body of work 4 games into the season

Was it in a goal line situation?

I have never heard of an Offensive Coordinator designing a play devoting three players to one guy.  A lot of double teams are created to block down on a D-lineman or chip-off in order to get to the second level (Zones, Power Gs and some Traps), but with three guys, how would you block that?

Let's be real here, how often does this happen?  Anybody with O-line coaching or Offensive Coordinator experience want to chime in here?

One more thought came to mind...  as impressive as Ittersagen's pass defending ability (as seen by INT's and passes defended), he has to be one of the most sure, pure tacklers in the open field.   Not only does he make the open field tackle, it is usually a perfect form tackle (not the lame dive at the legs kind).  His ability to make the sure tackle reminds me of Matt Steir (OLB in the early 90's).
