Being a Cardinal fan, I believe Wheaton has the upper hand this week.   Anybody have a line they want to set?  I would open with Wheaton -14.5

Being a rivalry game, the fact that it is in Naperville, and the fact that Wheaton has typically started slow in their games this year I would set it at Wheaton -10.5.

I will take Wheaton -10.5 then.

This is a sucker bet. I would put this spread at less than 7 for sure. Wheaton has a new qb, in naperville under lights, bell game. it's going to be closer than anyone thinks in my view.

I would have to disagree with you there Usee.  I have seen both teams play and this a dominant Wheaton team who is playing well.  I do not see us moving the ball on Wheatons D.  We are way to one-dimensional.

I have seen plenty of sucker bets, this is not one of them.

If you would like to take NC +6  (less then 7 points, like you said)  I will gladly do that with you.

That being said...I would really like NC to win this game and next week be talking about a CCIW championship because we looked 10 times better in week 5 than we did in weeks 3 and 4.

well, after I posted this I noticed the spread on the OAC pickems is Wheaton -13.5. 8)

You mention the game should be tighter than most think (less than 7 points), yet you are taking Wheaton to cover the 13.5 points over on the OAC pick-em's.   ;D

very true but if you scroll back you will notice I often submit picks on monday in the OAC pickems and modify them later in the week. I sometimes forget to pick so i always put "something" in on monday and then review/modify later.

I am not very comfortable with being a 13.5+ favorite on the road to a top 25 team.

I agree about not being comfortable with the spread, but let's not forget, North Central is no longer a top 25 team  8)

As GS mentioned I had bass drum duty for the first three quarters of the NPU v NCC fiasco.  (Other than the school song - which has been visciously truncated and mutilated over the years - I didn't know anything the band was playing).  Whatever happened to the Budweiser song?

I was sitting with NPU band director, Dr. Joseph Lill, who just received his Ph.D in trumpet performance from Northwestern University - and even he commented about the Cardinals woeful pass defense - of course when you put nine and sometimes ten defenders within a yard of line of scrimmage to stop that vaunted Vikings running game of zero and negative yards on first and second down - it doesn't leave a lot of help in the secondary.

Dr. Lill also mentioned that the Cardinals two QB's both had a lot of trouble throwing the ball on the run when they scrambled out of the pocket - so I am assuming, since he has an earned doctorate and must be learned - thusly the Wheaton squad might have a field day applying pressure with a good pass rush - that North Park could hardly muster.

I'll take the Crusaders by a touchdown - giving the Cardinals seven points for the emotion of playing at home for the little ding dong that hardly rings.

I am determined to be wise, but this was beyond me.

Usee, I agree with you that winning on the road is the key ingredient to eventually hoisting up the CCIW's hardware, however we will have to agree to disagree on who the pressure's on.
Augie is not where they were a few years ago.  North Central has shut them down recently and IWU shut them down last week.    I think Elmhurst has the tools to be able to shut them down also.  I agree Augie will be a different team Saturday at home and knowing they were shocked in Bloomington, but how much different?  Anyway you look at this game, it has the makings of a classic college football game.

Comet14- I tried to spot you at the EC game last Saturday.  Are you making the trip to Rock Island this weekend and perhaps North Central in 2 weeks for HC?

That is a pretty big leap. Naperville and IWU beat them at home so Elmhurst can beat them at Augie? when was the last time Elmhurst, Naperville, or IWU beat Augie in Rock Island?

Not much different than the team that is 34-8 at home since 1999 (24-5 vs CCIW teams at home with their only losses coming from Wheaton-3x, IWU-1x, Millikin-1x).

Also, for those keeping score Elmhurst's most recent trips to Rock Island:

Augie 64 Elm 42
Augie 58 Elm 0
Augie 62 Elm 0

In the last 8 meetings between Augie and Elmhurst the Bluejays have lost by: 14, 22, 22, 7 (2003), 58, 62,18, 34.

I applaud your "this is our year" thinking. It is the way Elmhurst should be thinking. Forgive me if I remain skeptical for now.  ::)

A lot of guys read while they play, and then sign up when they are done.  Not saying that is necessarily the case with Radio, but I know that I read religiously for the 4 years I played before I created an account for myself.

Al Gore had not yet invented the Internet when I was in school, so we didn't get to even be readers.

BP, you have written a lot of good stuff since you joined this party. Perhaps, your karma will rise on its merits if you stop talking about it so much.

Thanks MWFB - I'll stop.  (Between the two of us, I'm just trying to get to 200 as quickly as possible.)

Not as cute as you guys..when you say "between the two of us", are you referring to a little pillow talk?   moving on...

Touché, touché, but you had to dig for that one.  All in fun.

There is a potential upset* worth looking at this week - Milikin (1-4)  vs. North Park (1-4).  Milikin having only scored 13 points in their last three games.  North Park, coming off a loss to North Central, but putting up some strong numbers including 34 points.

North Park is improving every week.  A W vs. Eureka, 7-point loss to Rose-Hulman and last week's performance against the Cards, I think they are moving in the right direction.  However, this also could mean North Central is getting worse, L to Wash U and giving up 34 to North Park.  We shall see.

It's only Monday, so I'm not ready to commit yet.  I picked Elmhurst last week, which wasn't too risky, but each week I'm going to try and find an upset in the CCIW.  I guess I should have taken the Titans too.

Arggg! Not much talk about the Carthage/Elmhurst game. What a disappointing showing by both teams. It looks like Elmhurst didn't try as hard as Carthage to give the game away and thus snatched a victory. Congrats to Elmhurst. A CCIW win is a CCIW win. Turnovers were the story of the day. 3 INTs and 3 fumbles given up by Carthage. 4 INTs and 1 fumble handed back by Elmhurst. Most of the Bluejay points came from turnovers. Neither team had a running game. 60 yards rushing for each team with a 1.7 per carry average. Most of the yards came from QB scrambles. The Red Men spotted Elmhurst 14 points right off the bus. Carthage proved to be able to move the ball some through the air leading to several drives, but couldn't finish with TDs as 4 possessions ended with field goal attempts (3-4). I'm not sure I understand what the O.C. for Elmhurst was looking for in play selection as play calling was simply toss a bomb up the right sideline. Then toss a bomb up the left sideline. Then run a draw. Must have thrown at least a dozen balls down the deep sidelines resulting in few catches and several INTs. Elmhurst QB was 17-43 for the game, 2 TDs and 4 INTs. Not a real impressive showing from my viewpoint. In the 4th qtr the Bluejays went to the slant route frequently and this proved to be more successful. It is my opinion that neither of these two teams will figure in the CCIW Title come the end of this season.

First of all, I believe this may have already been addressed, but Elmhurst beating Carthage at home was expected by many, and thus not an upset.  As for your North Park pick, I agree that they are definitely improving, but Millikin is not as bad as you think.  Sure they have only scored 13 points in the last 3 games, but those 3 games were all against top 20 teams.  Millikin's offense is going to be able to throw the ball all over the field against North Park and their defense has held all three of those top 20 teams under 30 points, so I'm going to have to disagree and say Millikin wins this one convincingly.  I was quite impressed with Justin Levingson, their QB this week, and they have two great receivers in Katzmark and Kormelink.  One thing to note though is Emmanuel Minter, their RB, went down with an injury in the fourth quarter, but that shouldn't affect the passing game much.  North Park may be improving, but Millikin, and the rest of the CCIW for that matter, are still significantly better.

tjcummingsfan

I know NC doesn't have a great passing game, and with the running back they do have its almost unncessary, but with that said, NP got pretty good penetration, and defended the pass very well.  I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that if Millikin wins it'll be by a score (td) or less.  I was extremely impressed by NP's Shelby Wood, he's going to be great by the time he's a senior.  He made some plays I have for sure never seen NP quarterback make, and ones I've never seen in a game at NP.  I would say, equally, don't underestimate the Vikings...
