4) The Wheaton/Carthage and Augie/NPU games would have been clean sweeps -  minus redman04's complete break with reality and utter despairation picks.  ::)

Mugsy, do you like salt when you eat crow?

MMMMMM.......Crow!!!  ;D ;D ;D

Can we throw it on Tailgater's grill?

The reference to "utter despairation picks" was not necessarily related to the Wheaton/Carthage game.  Rather the perceived going "oppo" on every single game...

You know I was only kidding!
+K for the Tailgaters grill!

Hey....how did my grill get messed up in all of this?  Now I'll have to pull out my 101 ways to "eat crow" cookbook and study grilling suggestions. :D

Yes, I know you were kidding.

It is unfortunate if some "Wheaton" fans were rude and inappropriate.  My first reaction was "no way".  But then in any sports crowd there are those who act in a less than civil way.  I will not make excuses for those knuckleheads.  My hope is that you can trust that it is not indicative of a vast majority of the Wheaton fans. If I were in that vacinity and overheard any harsh words from the Wheaton fans towards you, I can honestly say I would have had something to say to the Wheaton fans.

Too bad I wasn't able to stick around to meet you or Tailgater.  Maybe next year I'll make the trek to Kenosha.

I'd love to make the Titans out to be a huge underdog next week vs Wheaton, but I don't think they are.  I think in Bloomington, that game is a "pick 'em." There will be two good teams playing with absolutely everything on the line and it should make for a great atmosphere.   From IWU's perspective, it's all about the offense -- will they be able to move the football?  We'll see.

I am not a betting man but I am sure you could probably get an awful lot of action if you  were offering this as a pickem game. If I were a betting man I wouldn't feel very good about taking the Thunder and giving many points either though. I would bet the OAC board would put a spread on this game.  ;) :)

OK, I've crunched the numbers and am releasing my official early lines for Saturday...

Wheaton -2 1/2 @ IWU

North Central -1 @ Carthage

Should be two fantastic games and quite a finish to the 2007 CCIW season.

So i've been busy for the last few weeks.  The last time I checked NCC was a longshot to get back into the playoffs and win the conference.

I wake up today...and wow.  Next week is going to be intense.

Mr. Ypsi

Carthage cannot win (or share) the title, since either Wheaton or IWU will finish with only one loss.  The RedMen are still (barely) alive for the playoffs as a C.

I agree w Mugsy. Keep in mind there are also many Wheaton area folks who are not affiliated with the college who come and support the Wheaton team as their "local" team. Not all Wheaton fans are part of the college

I was thinking -3.5-4.0 for Wheaton/IWU but -2.5 is a fair line.

I would probably make the carthage/ncc game -4 NCC at least.

I am from Wheaton and that is a slam to the local fans many of which are elderly and some of which are retired missionaries.  Anybody will tell you that the most vocal fans are the parents, yet I never have heard a swear word at a Wheaton game.  The Carthage stands were not even close to being full.  Maybe sombody said somthing I don't know but don't blame the fine residents of Wheaton as a whole it's unfair.  I was sitting next to the parents and they were loud and usually question every play right or wrong like every other parent but didn't here any profanities.

Congrats to the Red Men for a well played game against Wheaton.  I was impressed with the Carthage defense and with the ability of the QB to repeatedly dupe our D-line on the counters.

I agree with the comment on the over-pursuit on the punts - twice the Carthage punter avoided the potential blocked punt by simply side-stepping the defender, and then had plently of time to get off the punt.  Wheaton was also lucky for not being called on running into the kicker early in the second half.

A very sloppy game with way too many mistakes.  The difference on Saturday was that Carthage knew how to convert on every one of them.  The Red Men executed very very well.

By the way, the Carthage stands were very nearly full - that was fairly obvious to anyone who was at the game.  And I was sitting not too far from some Carthage fans and no one was saying anything that would embarass either team or school.  In my 27 years of watching Wheaton football, I've rarely heard fans acting innappropriately at McCully stadium - if anything, we need more spirit and noise from our side of the field.

Yes maybe over pursuit, but you need to factor in that a typical Carthage spread punt formation will frequently allow this to happen. Moore will only set-up 7-8 yards deep in this formation. Typically he will flow left or right prior to kicking as the fake punt (by run or pass) is frequently the first option and the kick second. Moore can kick with either foot and if he feels there is no shot at picking up the required yardage he has the ability of getting off a quick kick down either side-line avoiding the block. Moore was also a 2x All-State high school QB so he is fairly elusive at avoiding the rush from past experiences. His throwing ability was on display as he threw a strike with the fake punt TD in the first half. Late in the game Moore backed off to normal depth for punt formation as at this point field position was more important than attempting a risky fake. I believe his skills could be used at the next level. (Canadian, Europe and possibly NFL)

TG, well then I'll say that Wheaton played right into the trap!

I have no idea who you are talking to with this post and I don't fully understand your point either. That said I agree w Hiker that in my many years of attending wheaton games I have never heard unruly fans at E McCully.  My post was speculation to Red99 who says there was unruly fans on the wheaton side. If he says they were there we should believe him. I don't believe they were regular wheaton fans, however.

Wheaton falls to #10 (gracious voters)
NCC appears at #25 and carthage now recieving votes in latest poll

Titan0507

Both North Central and IWU played a very hard fought game, and obviously NCC made more plays and did what they had to do. There is a large amount of talent on both the teams and it showed during the game. The thing that stood out most to me however was the lack of sportsmanship shown by the NCC team. Obviously this was an intense game and emotions were flying and people get caught up in the game, that stuff is to be expected. There were a number of times however when a NCC player would make a good play and continued to taunt an IWU player after the play. For example, after converting a long first down run Fanthorpe got up and flipped the ball down to the IWU player who made the tackle and taunted him. Also Bo Osburn injured his arm in the first half and was in some pretty intense pain but continued to play during the second half, but was jeered at by the NCC players even after the game was over and the teams were shaking hands as they called him some pretty disrespectful names that I won't repeat here. There were also jeers from fans as the IWU team was walking to their locker room after the game.  In my opinion NCC showed the least amount of class and sportsmanship of any team thus far in the conference. The CCIW is supposed to be a high-class conference and each team should be showing the proper respect for the other teams in the conference. However it may happen I really hope that NCC does not get a big to the playoffs because I would be ashamed to have that type of play representing the CCIW. It is a real shame that such a good team is overshadowed by a classless attitude. And shame on an IWU grad for allowing that type of behavior from his team.
