Mr. Ypsi

Not sure if it's true, but I've read that a player has to clear waivers to be put on the practice squad - anyone know?

Likely headed for another team or practice squad

Does he still get paid his contract? or is there some sort of other compensation?

NFL money is not guaranteed, no.

Right, but does he get paid for being on a practice squad

If he's signed, yes.

Practice squad is still a very decent living.

Running Scout D would be a pretty good career, especially considering the amount of hours worked..

As pat indicated and my understanding concurs--studebakers contract is null and void unless he makes the teams regular season roster. He does have to clear waivers before being placed on practice squad. So any other team can take him but it would have to be for their 53 man roster. Eagles get dibs for practice squad. I do believe other teams can sign him to a regular season spot off the eagles practice squad during the season though.

Usee,

I believe once he clears waivers, he is clear to sign with anyone's practice squad.  Practice squad players can then be signed by another team, but then have to be added to the 53 man roster.

More info from another blog:

8-man Practice Squad:

After all teams have set their 53-man rosters prior to opening day and each team has passed 24-hours on acquiring the contracts of every other player waived by the other 31 NFL teams, each team may sign up to 8 players to occupy its developmental Practice Squad. These players practice with their teams but cannot dress on game days.

Further, any other team may claim a team's PS player on waivers at any given time during the season -- the only stipulation to this is that the team signing the PS player must immediately add that player to its 53-man roster.

A player is elibible for the PS if he:
Has no prior Accrued Seasons in the NFL
has one prior Accrued Season in which he was on the 45-man active roster for no more than 8 games
Has been on the PS with the particular team no more than 2 prior seasons

No money is guaranteed for NFL contracts, except for signing bonuses, which even for 6th round picks is a going to be around 6 figures.  On top of that, minimum salary for PS players for 2008 is $5,598/week over a 17 week season and includes playoffs if the team makes it... still comes out to a minimum of $95,166.  Not bad.

Plus whatever he has already been paid before being cut.  I'd guess that Mr. Studebaker will get about 15-20 times as much as his average graduating classmate this year - and still has all that "off-season" to make more! :D

If only I had been a LOT bigger, a bit faster, etc. (oh, and 4 decades younger, since they didn't make squat back in my day!) - *sigh*. ;D

Just joking about the 'sour grapes' - good luck, Andy!

Andy has officially made the Eagles practice squad.  Good news for him as he gets to continue his development with the team on a daily basis.

Good news!  I really thought it unlikely that Andy would do any worse than this.  Given his measurables and decent showing on the field thus far it was almost a given that he would end up on someone's practice squad, if he didn't make the 53 man roster.  Hopefully he can stay healthy, keep working hard and learning.
