On a weird day when rain was pelting the chicagoland there were at least 4 quarterbacks who threw for 6 touchdowns, 2 of them in the CCIW!! that has to be a record of some kind. Ladd and Evan Jones from Carthage threw for 6 TD's and Matt Hudson down at wabash also tossed 6 as did Mitch Niekamp of Illiniois college.

Hudson threw 6 for Wabash in Granville Ohio at Denison....rain was prior to game...but not during....was raining during the entire game just north

CardinalDad-I have only proposed questions that "could" happen. I never said what "would happen. The obvious part regarding Weinke is that one year (a playoff year) he was the DC and the next year he was not. I don't know any more than that but Thorne obviously felt strongly enough to name a guy who had never coached defense the coordinator over the sitting DC. That may seem normal to you but I don't think that happens too much.

I also think it is a simple fact that if you take veteran players and intsill a new scheme there are some adjustments and learning curve that natually come with it. Doesn't mean they can't have success but continuity (in coaches and schemes) is preferable to change in most situations that have been successful. I think that's pretty obvious too.

I have led the charge in discussing football on this board, nothing more. If there are some NCC posters who take that personally, so be it. I appreciate your response and analysis, I think its helpful.

I have said all along that NCC was the team to beat and the only chink in the armour are the questions above. Week 2 was the first indication we have that NCC may have those quesions answered but there is a lot of football to be played. I think they are still the team to beat (especially considering wheaton's ineptness on offense saturday).

usee,

Agreed that a change like that does not happen often. It wasn't normal. While the decision to put Lester at DC surprised many on the outside, it even surprised some some on the inside of the NCC program. But, it worked out and fortunately for NCC, the move was successful. I'm not so sure there was an obvious reason, though.
I respect your posts. Your knowledge and insight into DIII football is outstanding. Nothing personal here. I am just responding with my opinion and/or knowledge (for what it's worth).  :) ;D

lol..........I often wonder how you guys can possibly know so much and post such informative posts not only about your teams, or the CCIW,  but DIII football in it's entirety. Never the less, still very inpressive!

Good thoughts CardinalDad and New Tradition knows I was not "poking at him" rather just "punning" with him.   Tim Lester has nothing but high regards for John Thorne and I think there is a mutual respect for both parties.  In fact,  other than the EC vs. NC game each year, I would think Thorne would wish Tim Lester the best every Saturday.
Wow!  Carthage 70 points is remarkable.  I guess my earlier posts about the running backs can be thrown out the door as the Red Men showed no problems with their system.
Glad to see the CCIW get some big wins against some of the other quality conferences (OAC/MIAC/MIAA) this week.

I think Carthage played an arena league game and just didn't tell anyone.  Was really glad to see McKinney bounced back well from suffering a tough ACL injury last year.  If Kraig Ladd is as good a QB as he is a baseball player look for great things out of him all year.

Nice showing by the CCIW this weekend.  Good job by the Thunder to post a win under tough conditions vs. a good opponent.  Looks like Gingg is going to be a workhorse this year.  I'm looking forward to following his career.

After watching the the Wheaton - Bethel game, I really hated to see either team win or lose.  The water-saturated game was a mockery of what could have been a great game under reasonable conditions.  The fumbles, dropped passes, lack of any reasonable footing which severely diminished cutting/start-stop moves.....you had no idea how good either of these teams really were.  There were actually pools of water on the field.  There were 11 fumbles in this game.  Bethel  had about 200 yards total offense to about 130 for the Thunder.  Bethel had more first downs by 16 to 4.  This game boiled down to water-slippery turnovers at good field position and Wheaton got real lucky on that score.  I actually believe that the outcome would have been very different with reasonable field conditions.

Wheaton got real lucky on that score.

Right, and I'm sure it was also by pure luck that he was named an All-American return man.

I do agree that it would have been nice to see such a great matchup played under better conditions, but a win is a win and bad weather, like it or not, is part of the game.

All I can say is WOW!  The defense I can see... that offense is a long, long way from a #10 team in the country.   Hopefully the offense will make serious strides over the next 2 weeks before the CCIW schedule hits.

(Don't get me wrong I love seeing them at #10, I'm just not sure the offense at this point is worthy of that status.)

It's important to have a sense of proportion about the effects of weather upon a sporting event. For all the complaints about poor field conditions at various games around D3 last Saturday (although I'm on record as saying I enjoyed the waterlogged nature of the Rose-Hulman @ NPU game), the weekend's weather did a lot more than ruin the aesthetics of football games for some of the fans. There are a lot of people in bad shape down on the Gulf Coast today -- and a lot of people in bad shape right here in Chicagoland as well after this weekend's record-setting rainfall.

This hit very close to home for us Parkers. NPU and the rest of the Far North Side were deluged under around ten inches of rain over the weekend. The North Park campus is under a state of flood siege right now, and has been since Saturday evening. Two of the dorms had to be evacuated due to high water from the North Branch of the Chicago River shorting out electical transformers, and a third dorm lost electricity on Sunday. Students from two of the dorms have slept in the gym and in Helwig Rec Center the past two nights. The dining hall is closed due to flooding as well, as is the biggest classroom building on campus, Carlson Tower. Resident students have been eating their meals under makeshift conditions in Hamming Hall next to the gym. Needless to say, classes have been canceled for today, and there is an air of uncertainty about how long it will take for things to get back to normal at NPU ... not to mention how much cleanup and repair will cost.

As bad as that is, other people in the area have it worse. The northern sections of the Albany Park neighborhood west and southwest of the NPU campus have been evacuated. I've been around for some big floods before (notably the flood of '87), but what happened this weekend dwarfs anything I've ever seen. The North Branch has essentially become a giant lake west of the campus.

Something like this should really make you put a football game into perspective.

Thanks Greg for the report. It certainly gives a needed perspective. I have been following the devastation in Texas as well as the Chicagoland and it is really a sad situation with many lives uprooted.

my prayers are with all of those affected.

Thanks for the all the reports on the games this weekend.  I didn't see one so I'll post it, and apologize in advance if I missed it, but here is the write up on the Augustana game: http://www.augustana.edu/x10263.xml

Thanks for the report on the flooding, Greg.
