:46 seconds to go in aurora. IWU w ball 3rd and 4 at the AU 8.

interestingly Ladd threw an INT for a TD for AU's score to take the lead. Rooney replaced him for this potential game winning drive.

usee

IWU 1st and goal at the 4 w 29 seconds left.

I wonder if Ladd changed a running play to a pass play at their own 13 yd line before the pick? there must be a story there.

usee

Rooney runs for the TD and it looks like IWU will win this one. a QB controversy in Bloomington?

Mr. Ypsi

IWU wins it, 31-28.

A QB controversy??!!  Good grief, man - the 3 INTs are worrisome, but Ladd has 9 TDs in the last two games!

usee

Well, with IWU down 4 and the game on the line, who was the qb?

Carthage comes back to win 27-21. 5 turnovers for the Redmen.

BTW, I am not trying to make something from nothing but I find it very strange that with the game on the line Ladd wasn't in there. Maybe he was fighting an injury.

I don't believe there's any controversy.  WJBC was reporting the Ladd went down with an unknown injury on the last INT, plus Rooney had been playing consistent series in the prior two games as well.
Things are never as good as they seem and things are never as bad as they seem.

Mr. Ypsi

I'll be interested in how the Top 25 poll handles Wheaton this week.  They 'monkey-stomped' a decent CUW team, but last week's win suddenly looks less impressive than it seemed.

Titan Q

This is an article from the Pantagraph a few days ago on sophomore QB Brien Rooney...

http://www.pantagraph.com/articles/2008/09/18/usports/doc48d1e120a26f3161563730.txt

BLOOMINGTON — Just when opposing defenses thought they might be getting a handle on the high-powered Illinois Wesleyan offense, the Titans have unveiled another wrinkle.

While junior starting quarterback Kraig Ladd was throwing a school-record tying six touchdowns passes last Saturday, sophomore backup Brien Rooney also made an impact in the Titans' 48-34 win over Alma.

Rooney, a 6-foot, 185-pound graduate of Fenwick High School, directed a 10-play, 90-yard scoring drive in the final 1:19 of the first half to put IWU ahead 21-7.

"We can do kind of a change offense with Brien because he's more of a runner and he's a little bit quicker than Kraig," said IWU coach Norm Eash. "Brien can run our offense no matter what we're doing, but he can do a great job in the spread (two-minute) offense.

-----

I listened to the postgame show on WJBC - Norm Eash did confirm that Ladd was injured on the INT play (that allowed AU to score the go-ahead TD).  He had no idea if it is serious or not.

It is clear that Eash and staff really like Rooney as a "change of pace" for the offense, as the article details...gives IWU a totally different look.

Pretty gutsy comeback today by the Titans...sounds like AU really played hard and well.

From the Concordia website:

"Wheaton College scored twice in each quarter on the way to a 48- 3 conquest of the Falcons this afternoon. Tim Ellingson's 31 yard field put the visitors on the board at 11:34 of the first quarter and a Sean Norris 5 yard TD scamper made it 10-0 with just over a minute remaining in the initial canto.

Alex Pokorny hauled in a 60 yard scoring strike from Sean Norris on Wheaton's first second quarter possession and the pair hooked up for a 35 yard TD combination five minutes later. CUW's only points of the game came on Dan Winsey's 35 yard field goal just before halfime.

Nationally ranked Wheaton two more TD passes from Norris, a second Ellingson field goal, and a one yard run by Dan Newman before the clock ran out. "
