Still in the 2nd quarter, and NCC is doing a 'monkey-stomp' on Benedictine: 28-0.

Assuming they can't find any way to blow it ;), that makes the CCIW 5-0 on the day; 15-3 on the season.  Anyone recall what the best non-con result has been?

I'll be interested in how the Top 25 poll handles Wheaton this week.  They 'monkey-stomped' a decent CUW team, but last week's win suddenly looks less impressive than it seemed.

I dont think there will be any mystery. Wheaton will move up.

With both St. John's and Central losing, that seems likely.  But their big jump in the poll was from beating then-#5 Bethel, who is suddenly 0-2.  (Of course, NCC's victim, ONU, is also now 0-2, but losing to MUC is a bit different than losing to the Cobbers! ;))

I'll also be interested to see if Carthage and IWU increase their vote totals - both won, but far less impressively than expected.

bethel is 1-2. they beat concordia in week 1.

Correct, and I should have remembered that since I picked Bethel last week on the basis of being game two to Wheaton's game 1! :-[

Thanks, Mugsy!  (I was willing to look it up, but hoped I wouldn't have to!)

Matching 2005 will be tough, but looks like we blow most seasons right outta the water!

Kickoff had the CCIW ranked as the #5 conference (out of 27); I wonder if we could inch up to #4?  (And we've already gone a long ways from the pre-d3football.com days! ;))

In spite of their success yesterday I am very concerned about the Thunder offense. In particular, Sean Norris is not playing well. On the surface he threw for 3 TD's and ran for another yesterday. If you look at the reality he was 8-22 and is now 10-33 for the season, completing just 30% of his passes. That is simply not very good no matter what the reasons. Fanthorpe, Ladd and Evan Jones are all completing over 60% of their passes, which is a good benchmark. (Fanthorpe was 15-24 in the same rain Norris played in last week). This Saturday is a critical benchmark for the Wheaton offense. They play in Holland against Hope who we have already seen CCIW qb's dissect their secondary with relative ease.

I expected their offense to start slow with the inexperience on the Oline and at reciever but I expected more from Norris who has, in my opinion, been awful for a 2nd year starter. More specifically his accuracy has been way off and his judgement on how hard to throw each ball is seriously lacking. I think Rocky Gingg will be a stud this year and the OLIne will get better each week but Norris simply has to play up to par with the other qb's in the conference if Wheaton wants to contend for the conference title.

Separately I have been impressed with the IWU offense. I thought Ladd was not very impressive last year and he has clearly stepped it up and is playing very well. IWU should hope he is not seriously hurt from Saturday beause he is the guy who will lead them this year.

Evan Jones fought through 5 turnovers yesterday to throw a 61 yd game winner for Carthage to gain valuable expereince going into conference play.

Each CCIW team is being tested this preseason and it will be important how the individuals and the teams respond as there are key conference matchups right off the bat in two weeks.

Here is the Aurora Beacon News piece on the IWU/Aurora game...

In looking at the stats, it appears the IWU defense had its best game of the season.  The Titans gave up 14 Aurora 1st Downs (Hope had 21 and Alma 20) and 261 total yards (Hope 312, Alma 453).  Half of AU's points (14) came via INT returns for TD's.  IWU won the time of possession battle by over 6 minutes.

Junior DB Roman Hunter missed IWU's first two games.  Yesterday he had 6 tackles and an INT.  His presence has to help quite a bit.

Not sure what to make of Aurora (or Hope and Alma for that matter), so still hard to gauge where the Titans are.  Probably won't have a good feel until their next game - the CCIW opener vs Carthage 10/4, on Homecoming weekend in Bloomington.

I have to believe IWU, as a team, is ahead of where they were last year. The defense is not as dominant but no one expected them to be. Ladd has made significant, but expected, progress. The big surprise to me is their ability to run the ball with the loss of Dunlap. If that continues and the defense continues to get healthy, the Titans will be just fine. Their next game is their conference opener at home v Carthage.

Especially since the guy expected to get the majority of the carries coming into the season (sophomore Bo Lanter, who people around the program think has superstar potential) has only played sparingly due to injury.  Senior Christian Winston (338 yards, 4.0 yards per carry) has been a really nice surprise for the Titans in the early going.

exactly. I think the TItans will be a major factor in the conference race.

Mr. Ypsi

Watching Winston run is a real treat.  He's listed as 5'4"; standing next to the other players, even that seems like a 'stretch'. ;D

I figure one key to his success is that defenders can't find him. ;)
