That's the second-longest pass play in NPU history, incidentally.

NPU will have a hard time winning a conference game if they continue to field freshman and sophomores. I didn't see a SR. on their defense and there were only a couple of Jrs. Its hard to compete in the CCIW with underclassmen.

You win this week's Master of the Obvious Award, usee. ::)

Although a lot of his production was accumulated against Wheaton's second-team defense, which takes some of the luster out of it, Wood did have a fine day: 22-39 for 346 yards and four TDs. And Corchiaro, who has developed into his favorite target, caught eight balls for 197 yards and three TDs.

It ain't gonna get any easier for the Vikings, as NPU hosts North Central next Saturday.

Coincidentally Augie coach and alum Jim Barnes attained his 100th career victory yesterday. However, it was only his 67 win at Augie with the other 37 coming during his tenure at College of Wooster.

Did he get docked four wins for crossing state lines when he switched jobs? :D

Andone,

You're reading way too much into my statement about NCC/ONU.  I just thought it was interesting that ONU, which was picked to finish in 2nd place by the OAC coaches and thought to be a nationally significant win for NCC, has turned out to be a flop.
I find easily offended people rather offensive!

Statistics are like bikinis; what they reveal is interesting, what they hide is essential.

Unless they started printing the age of each player and/or their eligibility status on their jersey's I am not sure it's that obvious without actually seeing NPU play and looking through the program.  :P

I think Shelby Wood is a fine CCIW qb and would start for most teams in this league. He has a good arm, can definately take a hit, and moves around the pocket very well. It would have been nice to see how good NPU could have been with Kelvyn West and Chris Durr along with Wood. :-[

North Park's longest pass play was a 99-yard Gary Duesenberg to Harvey King swing pass at Illinois Wesleyan in 1970.  The play was almost called a lateral.  Duesenberg was three yards deep in the endzone when he swung the ball out to King, who may have been even deeper in the endzone, but the viewing angle of the statisticians from the IWU pressbox was not real good.  King, who was one of the fastest players ever at NPC, eluded the first tackler and went unchallenged down the far sideline to cut the Titan lead to 44 to 12.

Minutes later the Titans answered with another touchdown, and out of PAT kick formation faked the PAT and ran for the two point conversion.

dgp (long memory)
I am determined to be wise, but this was beyond me.

Norm must have been the holder on that team!  :D

I was just thinking...where has Billy Pilgrim/REDMAN04ISMYDADDY! been?  We haven't heard from him in quite some time...

I grounded him!

I wish I could have been down in Bloomington to see this one.  Any time you can beat IWU at home it's a big win.  Carthage has really been a pleasant surprise (although I always expect them to win, just look at my picks on the pick em' page!).  They are very young and make mistakes, but it really appears that these young kids are buying into the system and overcoming mistakes. From what people say (I haven't seen them play), IWU has a great QB and a great WR core.  To hold them the way they did and continue to overcome the turnovers speaks volumes about this D.  Also the O racked up anther 444 yards on O.  This team can be very dangerous.  They will need to have a good game against Elmhurst... I am sure the Blue Jays will bring their A game against the redmen!

Jaybird or anyone from Elmhurst... Just wondering how much of the old Augie offense was run last week.  It will be interesting to see if CCIW teams will have problems preparing for two offenses that are so drastically different.  I haven't seen them play so maybe they don't run it much...curious to hear your thoughts.

Unfortunately I just recieved word from a pretty good source that Welnack's injury is a broken leg/ankle and he is out for at least 6 weeks.  Not good.

Not good at all.  :(
As there are 6 regular season games left, it appears NCC has lost one of their stalwarts for the remainder of the season. Even If the 6 week time table for a return to action holds, we would be beginning the playoffs. However, after a 6 week layoff, a player would still be faced with additional time off to allow for rehab. Time for the next player on the depth chart to step up big time.

Luckily, the Cardinals have been rotating Mike Larson and Brian Iossi at center, both seniors.  If I were coach Ponx, I'd bump Iossi out to guard to fill in for the injured Welnack.  Seems like the logical choice since both of them have seen significant time on varsity rather than starting someone who has not really played on Saturday this year.

Neverwas- Augie claims it is running a "spread offense", but in reality it is just a modified Wing-T.  You don't completely abandon a scheme that has been your bread & butter for over 30 years, instantly.  :)

Elmhurst practiced in preparation for both schemes and IMO, were well prepared for the Augie attack.  IMO, the game was NOT lost because Elmhurst's defense was not prepared or inept.

Augie ran a lot of sweep options where Podulka would look for the gap to open up (as he ran towards the sidelines). If a gap did open up 9 times out 10 he would keep it himself and turn into an RB.  If there was no gap, then he would pitch it to his RB in Galliart or others.
Augie did pass the ball more times than I thought they would.

If I was going to say anything to the D-Coordinators left on Augie's schedule, I would say be prepared to see the old & the new throughout the game.  Also to the O-Coordinators,  Augie rushes 3 down linemen and they WILL be able to get to your QB with just 3 rushers.  That's what really paralyzed Elmhurst was that they dropped 3-5 LB/SS's covering the short passes and still were able to hurry the EC QB with 3 guys.

That's my take.  Comet what do you think?

Thanks Jaybird.  I am nervous for Wheaton's trip to Rock Island this week.  I believe the Thunder are a top tier team but their opponents have a combined record of 4-14.  Bethel has beaten St. Johns but lost to Carleton (hasn't had a winning record in years) so I'm not sure what that win means anymore.  I hope Wheaton doesn't overlook Augie as the Brass Bell week gets closer.  Augie always plays Wheaton tough especially in Rock Island.  Wheaton's D should keep them in the game, I think the offense needs to prove themselves against some stiff competition.

Neverwas- Augie is good, but not "untouchable" like they have been through past years.  Have faith in your team.  I think Wheaton will pull this one out.  They will have to play well on offense and control Podulka but I do think Wheaton is the better team right now.  I have seen both squads and both have their pluses and minuses.

Some impressive offensive performances for the week when a QB goes 17-18 for 239 yards, 3 TD's passing and 1 rushing TD (94% completion rate and a 260 efficiency rating) in only 2 1/2 quarters, but does not win offensive player of the week.   :o

Congrats to those who did win CCIW players of the week.  Some nice individual performances there.

That's ridiculous. Makes a supsect award even less meaningful.

Maybe the Thunder can use it as BB material this week?  :P ;D
