Carthage was the "Redmen" with a feather logo and a Native American theme.  The NCAA ruled that this name was offensive to Native Americans and so they changed their name to the Red Men to associate with the uniform colors from the 1920's.  The also eliminated the feathers and added the torch.  Not sure how the torch relates, but there it is.

The torch mascot, aka "Torchy", doesn't postdate the name change, orsky. He was walking around at Carthage sporting events and making us all laugh at his goofy appearance (friend and foe of Carthage alike) back when Carthage was still called the Redmen. He's derived from the school seal, which includes a torch that's supposed to represent the flame of knowledge (you can see an abstract rendering of it in the upper left corner of the Carthage website's front page). In theory, the "red" in "Red Men" and "Lady Reds" is now supposed to be a reference to that flame of knowledge.

This was all the result of a fairly well-thought-out maneuver by Carthage's leadership to circumvent NCAA sanctions. By altering the spelling of the school's sports nickname, and by tying the new nickname to a preexisting mascot and to the school seal, Carthage dodged the cudgels of the NCAA nabobs while making a concerted effort to tie the new nickname and new featherless logo to the school's existing symbols and traditions. I give Carthage College credit for that, but then again I've always viewed the school as the victim of a heavy-handed mandate imposed upon it by an organization that overstepped its bounds. I vehemently disagree with the NCAA's strongarm tactics in enforcing political correctness upon its members.

I agree wholeheartedly.   People need to relax a little bit.  And (not that I want them to) why does the NCAA not get upset at Nortre Dame and their Leprechaun that represents the "Fighting Irish."  In fact, nobody is upset about it.  This should be how all situations with school nicknames are handled.  If there is a caricature, just chuckle a little and just roll with it...

I ahve a question, After reading Mugsy's Post on the Conferense stats I wennt to the CCIW website. Who compiles those stats? I noticed that Randy Wright had no sack or forced fumbles in 2 conference games but he had a sack and forced the fumble that ended Carthages chances Sat. Help anyone

Not sure but in the play by play it says "C 3-2  E46 Jones, Evan rush to the CARTHAGE49, fumble forced by Wright, Randy, fumble by Jones, Evan recovered by CARTHAGE Koenenman, Jeff at CARTHAGE38" the official scorer must have thought jones was trying to run vs pass at the time. It is clearly a big loss. Its also not the final fumble. Carthage fumbled its next posession at the E37 yd line, which was forced by Mike LeFleur.
Jaybird or anyone else at the Carthage Elmhurst game help me out here. I must be losing my mind :P :P. The last drive by Carthage was ended with Jones (QB) being blind sided by Wright and fumbling the ball. I belive that the LeFleur fumble was earlier in the game and came after a reception by Murchut.

Not sure when the feathers were added but the origins of the name is true.  I believe that the feathers were added because the natural association with Indians because of the name redmen.  Personally I like the old logo much better.  I really think it is stupid to change it.  I don't see utah changing their logo which is basically the same thing.
