When was the last time the CCIW had 3 of their 4 games as night games?  (I don't know the answer just asking)
I would love to see Elmhurst get lights up on their field.  I know they attract great crowds at York and IC (HS) and think a night game would attract a great community atmosphere.

North Central was playing most of the home games at night going back to the mid 70s  (Dennis probably knows for sure). Interestingly, this season, all their home games are during the day.

Doh, I forgot about that.

I don't know the answer either - but for many years North Central was the only school with lights.

IWU had lights up through the 1970 season - it was like playing in a dimly lit closet so they took them down.  The last CCIW night game there was a 21-21 tie with Wheaton to open the 1970 season.

Wheaton for many years played its first home game of the season at Wheaton Central High School's Red Grange Field - NPC's last win over Wheaton came in 1979 on that field 10-7 in front of the largest crowd ever to see a North Park game (some say 10,000, but who knows, the place was packed to standing room only).

North Central went to lights when they opened their renovated field in the late-seventies.  The first night game was against Millikin, which the Cards won driving 99-yards (with the help of 3 15-yard personal foul penalties) in the final two minutes for a one-point victory.  The game was memorable because the pressbox wasn't finished.  It had no walls and no staircase to the top.  It was a bare concrete slab on top of a 30-foot cinderblock tower - the last ten feet of which had to be navigated by a ladder.

Off and on different CCIW teams have played at high school or municipal fields that had lights.  Augustana hosted North Park in 1970 at Rock Island HS stadium.  In that game Ken Anderson passed for two TD, ran for three, kicked a field goal and all five extra points in a 38-6 win.

North Park hosted Illinois Benedictine at Hanson Stadium on Fullerton & Central for a night game - I want to say in the Gene Mitz era 1975-77.  The Vikings got blitzed.  That game was memorable because IBC kicked off from the twenty-yard line (the North Park twenty yard line) after 3 unsportsmanlike conduct penalties on the North Park coaching staff after a disputed TD.  The Eagles tried an on-side kick (which North Park recovered).

When I was league SID I rarely missed a night game at North Central - and they were the only regular nocturnal host, 1978-95.

I am determined to be wise, but this was beyond me.

We got lights at Carthage in 1997 and if memory serves me correctly we beat elmhurst 41-0 in our first night game.... Keep in mind my memory is not very good.  I've been liquored up for 18 years.
HEY NORM, I LOST YOUR HAT! GO REDMEN!!!

Mr. Ypsi

dennis,

A kickoff from the opponent's 20 - WOW!  That's one I've never seen!

And what could they do EXCEPT an onside kick?  The rules, alas, don't allow for a fg, a regular kick is a guaranteed touchback (so zero yards), and kicking out of bounds would leave them with signifcant negative yardage. ;)

NPU should have gone for a fourth unsportsmanlike penalty - then IBC would really be stuck, since an onside kick couldn't go 10 yards! ;D

It's been a fun week.

For you gents going to the game, I will be the one on the North Central sideline cheering for North Central.

Have a good weekend, all! Go Cards!
You win! You always do!

I caught the segment on Comcast Sportsnet on the NCC - Wheaton game just before 7PM. I thought it was nicely done. It included on camera quotes from both coaches, and players from both NCC and Wheaton. Nice publicity for both programs.

from GS

"I can't think of any reason whatsoever why anyone who isn't a CCIW player's parent or a Wheaton supporter would read the CCIW women's soccer room (sorry, Jim). Women's soccer is as much of a one-school monopoly in this league as men's cross-country is."

GS- North Park has actually won two conference games this year and Wheaton has lost one.  Film at eleven.

Great. Now you've made me look up the CCIW women's soccer history page. Thanks a bunch, Dennis.

Wheaton's loss to Carthage last week means that the Wheaton women's soccer team is now 90-4 in CCIW history, not counting conference tournament matches. They've won all thirteen titles since the CCIW began sponsoring the sport in the fall of '95 (they shared the title with Carthage in '01). I'll stick with what I said about the sport being a one-school monopoly and not worth following in terms of this website's particular room for it, thankyouverymuch.

(And my abject apologies to this room's regulars for even mentioning women's soccer. Please put down those torches and pitchforks.)

WILL there be a podcast?   ???  I thought Wheaton did the on the TV thing
and we weren't just limited to the WONC??? :-\ :-\
D3 Rocks!

What a weekend for town supremecy between Naperville and Wheaton.  Not only does 6-0 NCC take on a 6-0 WC squad, but right now 8-0 Wheaton Warrenville South is playing 8-0 Naperville North... although I'm a fan of neither high school, I'd sure like to be at that game.  Anyone happen to have an update???

What I find interesting are the different start times. The games in Kenosha and Bloomington start at 6 pm, and the game in Wheaton starts at 7 pm.

Well, here we are the day before what should be the game of the year in the conference barring any surprises down the road.  This game is going to come down to the LOS, period.  Talk all you want about special teams, skill players, coaching, but I really see it as how is the Cardinal O-line going to handle a very skilled Wheatie D-line and on the flip side, how is the Wheatie O-line going to keep Wenger from wreaking havoc.  Should be a great game!

Games are won and lost in the trenches. Excellent analysis. Only a North Central alum could pen such brilliance.

The only problem is he took this from a Wheaton guy's pen 4 days ago.   8)

Of course the biggest factor will be the ability of each Line to control the LOS. I am making the assumption that yards on the ground for each team will be very hard to come by. I would expect a game where both teams have below their season average in Yds. The team who can rush for 125 yds will win this game and those yds may come from the qb position--most defenses don't account for the qb and both of these guys can run. How will the young Wheaton OLine handle the front led by Lb's Wenger, Treglown and Swanson? On the other side you have a great Dline (the key to their defense IMO) in Thiessen, Kuenzle, Pagh and McKinney (Theobald is an awesome DT but he may not play?). These guys are going against a banged up Oline without Welnack, having moved Delancey to Guard and starting a frosh at tackle. If the Thunder can control the LOS and limt Sulo while pressuring Fanthorpe with 4, they will control the game.

Even Mugsy wouldn't let you skate by with that theft CardinalAlum.  ;)

The one other thing that I will say that is scary about Naperville....they have only 6 seniors starting (3 on offense, 3 on defense) and none of them is named Fanthorpe, Sulo or Wenger. This is still a young team. I think Wheaton has 9 Sr's starting on defense.

It's not my fault you were right on the money!! ;)  I didn't purposefully rehash what you wrote.  I was more responding to the article in the Naperville Sun.    Your knowledge of the CCIW football is impressive.  Here's hoping you aren't right this week!! ;D :-*
