Which one's the punchline, R04IMD? "Where is the john?" or "Where is the love?" They both work!

Some thoughts about the Elmhurst Wheaton game.

For Elmhurst
1) One key is going to be the ability to run the ball.  EC showed they could run right up the gut against IWU.  I think it will be harder against the Wheaton D-Line, but if Elmhurst can establish a rushing game,  that will open up more options on offense.
2) The receivers have to step it up and make the catch, especially when the ball is hitting you on the numbers.
3) The secondary has to step it up and be ready for the Wheaton aerial assault which has just murdered us the last few years.
4) Linebackers for EC have been sharp and (hope it) continues to stuff up the running game.

For Wheaton

1) Trying to get back to the rhythm they had prior to the NC game.  I think NC did a great job of taking the Thunder out of their sync.

2) Defense standing up and bottling up Kudyba in the pocket.  Studebaker was great at this and I think on Sat. Wheaton has to do this too.

Earlier in the season I would have said this game was going to be a Wheaton runaway, and while it may still be- I think Elmhurst has shown that they are at least able to hang with the big boys.  The key for Elmhurst is establishing some consistency and prolonged execution which cost them the Augie and IWU games.  (Factor in 3.5 quarters against Carthage too).

I think if you are relying on Elmhurst's ability to run the ball to win the game it may be a long day for the Bluejay's. No one has run the ball anywhere near their average vs Wheaton (North Central came closest rushing for 157 vs a 184 avg). Elmhurst averages 112 yds per game and 3.3 yds per carry on the ground and vs IWU they had 173 yds and 4.0 yds per carry. Wheaton has held every team it has played under their yds per game/ yds per carry average.

NCC: avg 184/4.8; vs Wheaton 157/3.7
Millikin: avg 114/3.5; vs Wheaton 82/2.9
Augie: avg 183/4.5; vs Wheaton 77/3.1
NPU: avg 86/2.8; vs Wheaton 59/2.3

Elmhurst: avg 113/3.3; Vs Wheaton ??

If Elmhurst gets 100 yds rushing and anywhere near 3.0 yds per I would be shocked. No, I think Tim Lester is a smart guy and he will try to exploit the Wheaton LB's and Safeties in pass coverage with Kudyba the way NCC did. Now if he has the OLine to protect him that NCC did, we will find out.

On defense, given NPU, IWU and Augie's ability to run the ball right at the Elmhurst defense, I would suspect you will see a very healthy dose of Mr. Rocky Gingg on Saturday and your gameplan should likely be prepared for that reality.

Just my initial thoughts.

Sorry JB,

I don't see how the Elmhurst O-line keeps the Wheaton D-line from dominating this game.  Wheaton's D-line is extremely good and their ability to control the line will force Elmhurst to throw.  There's a big difference in an offense when you know they are going to have to throw the ball.  I don't see Elmhurst staying within 3 td's.  Just MHO.  :)

yes, but Augie and IWU beat us passing the ball, not running the ball.  The D-Line and LB's in both games were able to manage the rushing game, forcing 3rd and longs.  Gingg is a great RB no argument there, but I think Wheaton will find more opportunities passing than rushing come Sat.

Really? Augie ran the ball 47 times for 211 yds and 4.5 per carry with 5 rushing TD's. They passed 15-18 for 194 yds. I think you misremember. Elmhurst managed the running game against Augie about as well as George W. Bush has managed the country the last 8 yrs.

And North Park, who averages 86 yds per game and 2.8 yds per rush ran the ball 41 times for 150 yds and 3.7 yds per carry against Elmhurst.

Do you really think Wheaton won't be able to run the ball? Maybe you are right and they think they can't run. Maybe they won't even try.  :-\ 8)

My only point here is that the D-Line and LB's have not been the problem in EC's 2 losses. and have helped them win 3 of their 5 wins.

Just my 2 cents worth on orskys talk about the red birds running up the score on the county seat school.   44 21 is not a run up.  The l4th and 8 play was a very well calculated risk.  4 things could have happened and only one was a negligible risk.
Touchdown, interception (100 yard return unlikely)  incomplete pass, or pass interference.  Why not?  Wheaton certainly wasn't going to blitz on the play.

Do feel for Elmhurst come saturday.  Don't think IW will have much answer for unless Thorne's team has a huge letdown.

The zebras were giving NCC 14 downs?  No wonder the game came out the way it did!! ;D
