Being a former Carthage defensive lineman I am slightly offended by your NC QB  but if you don't file a greivance on me I will let yours go as well.

Deal? ......
We will always be REDMEN

It's a deal. There will be no grievances issued by Mr. Goulet.

How have the CCIW teams been looking thus far as far as game/season prep? Still work to do? Pretty much ready to rumble? I know around this time most players are ready to hit somebody NOT wearing the same color jersey. Just wondering if the teams are we they think they should be to get where they want to be.
You win! You always do!

Usee,

I cannot make the trip.  Some posters are though so we should get good feedback.  From your comments...it should be a stiff challenge for Wheaton's O-line vs. the Bash D front and LBs - I'd expect an excellent pass rush.  Bash has some injuries in the D-backfield but should be OK at corner.  RB for Bash is a huge question mark so that is an area of interest.  Our top 2 backs transferred.

Wish I could make the trip - as I stated earlier, should be a great test for both squads.

Any word on the Carthage/Concordia WI scrimmage on Sat.? Redmen 96 I promise I will call asap.

mugsy & usee:

Both Wheaton and Wabash will learn alot about themselves on Saturday.  The strength of both seems to be the "D," even though the Wabash secondary would seem to lack the experience that Wheaton has returning.
Protection by the OL will be key for both QBs.  Again, for all of us, it will be an interesting scrimmage.

While we have not played each other during the regular season for a few years, it's a definite plus that the programs maintain a relationship that allows this pre-season test to occur.  Both will benefit.

Mugsy

BashDad,
Sounds like we have some common impressions of each team based on those who have chimmed in.  In addition to your points, it also sounds like the RB position is a considerable question for both teams.  I've heard Wheaton has some talent at the position, but it is mostly unproven talent due to the number of seniors at the position last year.  Some highly regarded recruits at the position, but again, unproven at this point.

We scrimmaged Wabash my senior year (88') down in Crawfordsville.  Very competitive scrimmage that set us up for a great season.  Class all the way from the folks at Wabash.

I recall some high scoring affairs between the two schools in the early to mid 80's - something like 55-48 to Wabash.  Keith Bishop, currently the QB coach at Wheaton, passed for something like 525 yards and 5 TD and Wheaton still lost.  It was crazy!

Yes, the history of the relationship has been very positive--
one reason why some of us at Wabash have a real concern with the recently signed NCAC/UAA contract (even in the short term) eliminates the possibility of maintaining good and healthy scheduling of such teams as Wheaton, Hope, etc., on the non-conference side of things during the regular season.  Alas, we are now locked into this situation for the next two years.

Mugsy,

'88...ah that was a good year.  What position did you play?  We started 7-0 knocking off and undefeated Carroll squad in week 7...only to lose our last 2 that season - both hearbreakers...15-10 in a mud pit in Cumberland, KY (NAIA) and blew a Monon Bell lead the last game that knocked us out of the playoffs.  I believe we were ranked #1 in our region for 5 weeks that year.   We had Augustana coming to our place if we would have beat DPU.

JR and Keith Bishop are very good people!

Mugsy

BashBacker90,
88' was a good year.  I played outside linebacker.  We ended up 7-2 as well, losing to Millikin 14-7 on a last minute interception return for a TD and we lost to Augie in a hard fought game that turned from a 10-7 game in the 4th quarter to a 30-13 blowout in less than 5 minutes.

That year if I recall correctly there were 6-8 teams in our region that were all 7-2 fighting for a single remaining playoff spot.  A shame really, but that's nothing new...  I want to say it was John Carroll that got "the vote" by the committee over the rest of us.

JR spent a considerable time in Indiana coaching high school football at Franklin and Lawrence Central before coming to Naperville Central High School and then Wheaton College. I believe he has announced this is his last year coaching - his 24th year at Wheaton.  Time flies...

Mugsy,
pretty sure it was '86 that we were in crawfordsville scrimmaging.  I only remember because as always we were travelling on the cheap with 4 guys in a room and I had a cast on my hand that stunk enough to wake the dead.  Actually I think it woke up Steve Ryan (?) who shoved me off the bed.  Anyway, we were just sophomores then (I think).

Ceterum censeo Carthaginem esse delendam!

Redmen96,

I have a prep period @ 2:00pm. I will call you TODAY

Mugsy, that 22-16 win was the highlight of my years at Elmhurst. :)
We didn't get to many "big time" wins and winning that game was light Tinkerbell gracing us with her wand.  I remember ringing that Langhorst Bell all night long until Security told us to go home.
When can we put an end to the Indian controversy??  Let's concentrate on football terms and the big games this weekend.

I know what the Carthage website says about the name, but it actually goes back to its days in Illinois.  In Carthage Illinois there is a high school named Carthage and their mascot is the Blueboys.  So to play off that, Carthage College took the Redmen.

I would be upset if the name is changed.  But it looks like it is going to be a great season again in the CCIW.  I am also an ex Carthage defensive lineman and am looking forward to Carthage repeating this year.  Although it would be hard.  Good luck to all.

Also, I will keep all the IWU fans, players and community in my prayers for the loss of their players.

Mugsy

Sterny,
Ah yes... it's coming back to me now.  I was repressing some unfavorable memories.  It may have been 86', not 88' that we scrimmaged at Wabash.  I was one of the lucky one's to room with you and that "smells like death" cast.  ARRRRGGGHHHH!!!! :o
