Reflecting on the cards 10-0 regular season, it made me think of the greatest CCIW of all time in recent years (post auggie mid-80's)...

I have narrowed it down to 4 teams:

03' Wheaton

04' Carthage

05' Auggie

05' NCC

Personally, I would love a 03' Wheaton/04' Carthage fantasy match-up....

just something to ponder...

I'd say best teams since 2000.  I know in the 90's there are a ton of great Millikin, Wesleyan, and Augie teams.  I'm sure someone who has been around D3 for longer than I have would know a lot more about them.

I think the 2000 Milikin team was pretty good, with Packer and Brylka.

If you want to pick a Wheaton team from the last ten years, in their two year stretch without a conference loss, the 2002 team was quite a bit stronger than 2003.

Their conference schedule in 2002:
*ELMHURST COLLEGE....... 62-7  W
*at Millikin............ 39-20 W
*CARTHAGE............... 36-6  W
*at Illinois Wesleyan... 35-21 W
*NORTH CENTRAL.......... 41-7  W
*at North Park.......... 68-12 W
*AUGUSTANA VIKINGS...... 38-14 W

They did have a  16-23 hiccup in week one against Alma, but they made up for that with a 42-14 victory in the playoffs over that same Alma team.    The 2003 team made it deeper into the playoffs (due to getting Mount in a later round) but didn't have close to the dominanting  performance in CCIW play the '02 team did.

I am pretty surprised they made NCC a #4 seed among the top seeds. that is, the winner of the North goes to Alliance in the semis. I would have thought the North would be seeded as #2 or #3.

Here's where the $ comes into play.  It's a pretty safe bet that MUC wins the East (since they've made at least the semi's every year since 1995).  So by pairing up the North and East, the NCAA is almost 100% sure this semi-final will not require a plane flight.  Almost all of the west and the best of the south require a plane flight regardless of the matchup, so this N/E and S/W pairing will save money.

Actually that's not what happened. I listened to Dick Kaiser, Chair of the National committee and he said they pick the top 4 teams and then seed them. He said consensus was Mt Union #1, Millsaps #2. They debated for a long while between Willamette and NCC as 3 and 4 and ended up with NCC as #4.

Well, maybe.  I say $$$ defeats conspiracy to avoid MUC-UWW, Act IV! :D

I honestly don't think they thought about it that far. I think they were debating whether a #2 seed from another region is a higher seed than a #1 and in the end they thought NCC was the 4th best team. It pretty much debunks the notion that they pay any attention to the polls.

Mr. Ypsi

Trivia of possible interest:

OAC has a post-season pickems going.  #7 (8-2) Wheaton is listed as a 7.5 point favorite AT #2 (10-0) Trine, yet the early picks are still 6-0 for Wheaton. :D

Wheaton back in the rankings at #25.  North Central holding at #2.  Wabash free falls all the way from #3 to #15.

The best team Wheaton has ever had was in August of 2007.....but I digress. The best one that actuallyfnished a season was definitely the 2002 team. they gave Mt Union the best game of any Wheaton team. The next best Wheaton team was the 1995 team. they were loaded too. Best NCC team I have seen was Kam Kniss, Radtke, Holden and company. This year's team has a chance to better that.

SonsofThunder

Here come the Thunder(Wheaton)...  I see an NCC/Wheaton rematch @ Naperville.  Consider this...Wheaton travels 4 hours to play Trine...6 to play Case-Western or 3.5 to play Wabash...and then 10 minutes to play NCC.  All the while NCC plays in the comfort of their own home.

I love this time of year as a CCIW fan.  Overrated 10-0 teams "match-up" in the playoffs, and get beat up by a more physical CCIW teams.

In the words of Coach Swider.... Here we go now hWheaton...(The pronounce as written)
