you are a radio anouncer for a college radio station....you are not John Madden ( who probably hears how bad he is on a daily basis)  Your job is to anounce you need to learn to take what people say to you with a grain of salt

washdup- i also thank you for your rational comments on an emotional day. its tough for players, fans and coaches when there is so much on the line and both sides have overcome mistakes to give them a chance at the end. there was a lot on the line for a game to end like that. you expect a competitor like radtke to display some emotion in the heat of the moment. I saw some emotion like that from augie coaches, players and fans last year when wheaton beat them in a hugely emotional game. nothing i saw was unexpected given the high stakes. i think everyone needs to allow a little room for people to react to a high stakes contest. i would hope the officials got it right because ending a game like that is a tough pill to swallow.

Ric- you know me well enough to know i wouldn't say it if i didn't think it were true. that said, my experience w announcers is limited but i always brought my radio to alliance to hear your call. i hope i get to do it again some day.

Who is sick of reading books about past stories from high school football games that don't mean anything to what happened today????

cardinal20- if you want to get down to it what i said was "they aren't any good". i didn't say you were "terrible". the difference is that most of the college brdcast teams 'aren't any good' and a few of them are "terrible". the reality is that if i was logging on to listen to the radio broadcast of the game i would have listened to the augie announcers. i have no idea if they were any good because i haven't heard them before. i have heard you and wouldn't pick you as my first option. when wheaton played ncc, i didn't listen to you or the wheaton broadcast team...i listened to the d3 team. when i listened to the elmhurst/wheaton game i prefered the elmhurst team to the wheaton team. up at carthage last year i listened to the carthage team, they were pretty good.

i also listened to you guys last week for a little while during your millikin broadcast. if you want specifics i am happy to provide in an email. i will say that whomever does the color analysis on your team is better than the play by play. if you put as much effort into improving your broadcast as you do berating people who actually listen to you, you might be better off.

many of the folks on here will make a choice come playoff time who they will listen to. you might want to use this as an opportunity and stop being so defensive.

To the person who announces games and thus thinks he is a football expert.

My name is Dan Taylor.  I was #33 for the Cardinals, where I started from 1997-2000.  I played seven different positions on Defense for the Cardinals.    I have been involved in playing or coaching football for my entire life.  I played at Cary-Grove High School.  While it is completely unnecessary for me to post my personal information on this website, I will do so to appease you, because obviously you do not respond to reason.

I have repeatedly posted my frustrations with the cardinal announcers on this board.  I have had prior discussions with you about what I feel is lacking.  I have even suggested that WONC allow Cardinal alumni players to come back as color analysts in order to improve the broadcasts (this is done on many college campuses, instead of allowing someone who knows nothing about football to provide "commentary" about what is occuring).  If you cannot handle the criticizm...then I suggest you find another profession, you are rather thin skinned for a radio announcer.

Again, do not hold yourself out to be a radio announcer...post on this board as such....and then not expect people to provide comments on your radio performance.

in chicago today i saw first hand a north park team that some have touted as 'on the way'. what i saw was a team with a few really talented players but overall not enough talent to compete in the increasingly competitive cciw. it seems coach cooper has brought the np program to a point it has been a few other times in the past. that is, they are on the verge of becoming respectable and being able to win a few cciw games. they need more talent in order to do that. the new field should help, it is a nice facility. still not good for the visiting team.

your qb, haehn, has a great arm but makes some poor decisions at times. sherman gant could start for any team in the cciw. he is the real deal at wr. there is some good speed at the other skill spots. not nearly enough talent on the offensive and defensive front. it remains to be seen if anyone can help np turn the corner. coach cooper has brought the program to a point where he has the chance to change that, if he can. rucks did it before him and decided he couldn't.

What are you talking about you go from t bone option to defense....will you please put a rational thought together?  I really have no clue what you are talking about!  You wrestling a former 'worldchampion' and being stronger has nothing to do with football.  THIS IS A FOOTBALL SITE....and there isn't not a steriod problem here in D3, and what is all this talk about west coast offense?  You have already been told that Carthage is really the only west coast offense in the CCIW....So once again your post means nothing

Wow!  All I can say is that I saw two very talanted teams take the field today in Rock Island.  Congrats to Coach Barnes and the Vikes for winning his first CCIW title and the 20th in school history!  Congrats to Coach Thorn and a great NC team that played superb football all day long.  Each team had opportunities that they didn't capitalize on and turnovers that cost them.  I don't think that you could have asked for more in a game that essentially was the CCIW title game.  It was a thrill to watch another close game at the end of the season, but I am happy to see Augustana end up on top with this one.  Now, I hope that they can close out the season with a win at Wheaton.  I know that the team that was picked to be in the middle of the field for the conference sure would like to end up with an undefeated conference slate.

Maybe the writing on Augie's helmets arent big enough...

Maybe they can't read the cursive writing?

The fact of the matter stands that when the IHSA playoffs start the referee pool is dimished.  Many officials work both in the IHSA and college ranks.  Then suddenly there are all of these high school playoff games that are played on Saturday when during the regular season HS football is primarily held on Friday nights.  Naturally, the IHSA games want the best referees and they seek them out for their games.   This is unfortunatly a fact of how it works.  When you are down at Division III, no one is the cream of the crop.  That goes for players, referees, and radio announcing teams.  We are looking at the equivalent of the Midwest League.  Only the guys from the CCIW rarely make it to the top.

I think I'm getting a bad rep on this site. I never said I can't take any negative comments. I've have numerous other broadcasters that listen in to my broadcasts and I get feedback from them. The problem is we have different guys for our broadcasts and not a consistent voice because our job is to allow opportunities for the students in broadcasting. We cannot have people outside of the station on our broadcasts because that is a rule. It is what it is. I can take negative feedback but as long as there are specific examples. I have no problem. The problem I have is with blanket statements that berates probably the best college station in the state and that is a fact. I have the proof to back it up. You can email me with examples if you want. My email is out there for everyone. I don't care if people know who I am. My email is jplamar@noctrl.edu. One last thought, we don't have a certain play-by-play and color person. It rotates throughout the game.

wheaton does NOT run the west coast offense. never has. ncc does NOT run the west coast offense. shepherd, i am having a hard time understanding what you are talking about so please be simpler and clearer.

what do you mean by west coast offense? the traditional west coast offense, ala bill walsh and the 49ers, features a lot of formations/motions and personnel groups to create matchup problems for the defense. in addition it uses the rb's extensively in the passing game and has short routes. it is a perimeter passing game that stretches the field horizontally more than vertically. the tight end is the center of the west coast offense (ala  russ francis, brent jones) and it mixes the run in but typically uses 1 back or split back looks to get there.

usee

there is no west coast offense that runs the shotgun. joe montana never took a snap in the pros via the shotgun. steve young never did w the 49ers. the west coast offense is built on timing and qb mechanics to deliver the ball. they don't use the shotgun because it is too difficult to teach the qb the progressions and timing of the passing plays. in addition, formation groupings in the west coast offense include multiple versions of 0,1,2 tight ends or 1,2,3,4 wr's.

wheaton does not throw the ball to the rbs other than a screen or a fb in the flat on play action. they use 2 formations which is double what they have used for most of the last 20 years. this is the first year in the 20+ years i have watched wheaton football that they have used the shotgun and it is a version of the northwestern option package that wheaton uses. ncc's offense is a spread offense and tries to deliver the ball quickly using the formation to stretch the defense. they use a lot of wr sets but not much else. nothing wheaton does resembles anything i would call "west coast".

lost in all this is the statistical highlights from today:

ncc held to 330 yds w kniss throwing for 212 and NO td's. kniss' two muffed snaps cost ncc big time. augie had 380+ yds on the ground and their final drive was in typical augie fashion, eating clock and picking up first downs. barnes has learned from his wheaton games not to leave any time on the clock. each of the last 3 yrs he was beaten when long augie drives at the end of the game ended w too much time for a wheaton offense to respond. i am sure that factored into barnes thinking down the stretch as he did not want to leave any time for a kniss led offense to operate.

I am looking forward to the game next saturday and the playoffs to follow.
