Shepherd,

I really have to question if you know what you are talking about.  Augie won four straight National Championships (something that no school in any Division has ever done) with the same one dimensional offense.  Sounds like a "great" team to me.  They have consistently been one of the top teams in the CCIW and are regularly ranked nationally.  Their lack of success over the past few seasons (by success I mean CCIW championships and playoff appearances) can be attributed to a suspect Defense and not the one-dimensional nature of the offense.  For the past 25 years, the offense has regularly averaged 300+ yards rushing and 30+ points per game.  Until someone demonstrates an ability to stop the wing-t, there is no reason to change the offense.  It worked when I played and continues to work today.

Shepherd,
Do yourself a favor get a copy of football for dummies and then read it...After you do that maybe just maybe you can come back here and people will understand what you are talking about!

I realize the talk this week/weekend seems to and should focus on the Augie/NCC game as both appear will be CCIW representatives in the playoffs. Congrats to Augie for rising to the top yet another year.

Least we forget about some of the other CCIW teams, I want to offer comment on the Carthage 42 - 7 thumping over IWU. The score was lopsided for a good reason. The Red Men were able to put together all three phases of football in the same game. The young offensive unit, which will have virtually all return next year, proved it has grown tremendously over the coarse of the season. Raking up over 500 yards of total offense with 434 yards on the ground and scoring 5 TDs in poor weather conditions. The defense got back to business allowing only 14 yards rushing, but did give up over 300 passing yards, most of which went to one reciever who had over 230 yards individually. The D showed it's bend, but don't break character preventing 2 red zone scoring threats by IWU. Special teams were consistant and Donovan Moore cashed in yet another successful fake punt for a TD to close out the scoring. Although Carthage is out of the hunt this season they have a chance to finish 7-3 (a good season by most accounts) and the promise of again being a top contender in the CCIW next season.

mugsy-i agree with you but the 49ers won the superbowl in 1982 (the same year JR biship took over at wheaton) using the west coast offense....it was a bit more than a concept by then.  :P

Congratulations to Augie for a gutty victory over a really good and well coached NCC team. Hopefully, NCC will make the playoffs, along with the Vikings.

It is unfortunate that the game was possibly decided on a controversial penalty, but it frequently works out that way in close games. The weather probably favored Augie's running game, but with 3 lost fumbles by Augie, the Cardinals were given several opportunities to win but could not capitalize. All in all a great victory for Augie.

After watching Augie against Central early in the season, I did not think the defense would hold up through the CCIW season with the league becoming more balanced every year. Nevertheless, the D came through when it had to durng the season and helped make it a memorable one for Augie fans.

Mmmmmmmmm...T-bone...

As Augie6 stated earlier, Augie's wing-T isn't really all that option-oriented anyway. They run it a little more now because they have a very good running QB, but as I recall they really didn't run much option during Reade's years. That's not to say they don't have a lot of options, but traditionally they haven't run the QB-down-the-line-of-scrimmage option like, say, past Oklahoma teams. During Reade's years I think they did a little more misdirection type stuff. For example, I don't think I've seen them run the wingback counter in years. It was a staple on Reade's teams when they had very quick wingbacks like George Velasquez and Dennis Fraikes.

Augie6

The counter was one of our key plays during Reade's tenure.  As dansand mentioned, the wingback position (Velasquez, the Bob Guerrieri/Dennis Fraikes combo, and Fraikes in 1987) had multiple seasons of over 1000 yards during this period.  Our qb's during this time were typically less than 200 yds rushing for the season.

Ok, after having a chance to sit back and think about yesterday's game, I have a few comments with everything that has transpired.

1)NCC had numerous opportunities that they did not capitalize on.

2)Augie ALMOST executed their gameplan to perfection.  Their only blemishes were the fumbles, but otherwise, they accomplished what they had to.

3)Weather was a huge factor in the game.

4)I hope that NCC works on some type of goalline package with Kniss under center.  To take the snap 4 yards deep with the ball inside the 1 is asinine.

5)NCC's defense didn't play too bad.  They gave up some yardage, but held their own.

6)Shepard, where in the world did you come up with some of that stuff?
(t-bone, Tinley Park, Bloom, West coast)  In short, WHO CARES?

7)For a radio announcer to call out a 4 year starter and ask about their qualifications is a joke.  Stick to the radio booth.  Criticism is a part of modern day media.  Take it or get out of the business, it will only get worse from here.

8)NCC needs to bounce back against North Park.  Hopefully the air wasn't completely let out of the balloon and the Cards realize that a win against North Park gets them into the playoffs.

9) Augie must guard against a letdown themselves.  Wheaton will be ready for them, as they always are.

Finally, as I stated yesterday, congrats to Augie and their fans,  You deserve it.  I apologize for some of the moronic posts that appeared here yesterday from some of my fellow NCC fans/alumni/students.

I would just like to say that yesterdays game was a true indicator that ncc and augie are the two teams that should be at the top.  Both teams held under their average scoring, all coming down to a field goal with no time left...blocked...not blocked.  It couldn't have been any closer.  Both teams had their mistakes, both teams had big plays.  What it comes down to is that both teams played with all their heart, this will probably be a game most of these guys will remember forever.  In any situation like that emotions run high, players get more riled up and may say things theywouldn't otherwise, fans as well.  If roles were reversed i'm sure augie fans/players would have some anger as well.   With time to reflect for both i think augie deserves a congratulations.  I don't think it was a matter of who wanted it more...it was who was able to execute with all of the emotions running high...augie did that.  Congrats and maybe we'll see ya down the road.  Cardinals-lets go get north park..it doesn't end here

i know ncc has a package w kniss under center, they used it v wheaton w holden in the I. surprised they didn't get into it on the 1 yd line. fumbling the snap right before half is a big play.

I agree.  I think shepherd should stop posting.
