Sheperd:

Yes Elmhurst had a great year this year. They still most likely will have a losing record in conference. They havn't had a winning record in confernce in a long time.  For them to go to the playoffs they would have to most likely go at 9-1 or a slight chance of 8-2. I don't see that happening anytime soon. Also it would be extremely difficult for the CCIW to get 3 teams into the playoffs.  If that were to happen, it would proably be any 3 out of Augie, NCC, Carthage, and Wheaton.

Congrats to Auggie! Shepherd, i dont know you from adam, but you are a fool!!!

Mr. Ypsi

Guys,

From my earlier posts I'm sure I will seem a most unlikely defender of Shepherd, but he seems to be posting with some humility and respect - let's cut the rookie some slack!

Even just a few hours ago I was wondering whether to ask Pat to cut him, but I see some hope that he could become a valued member of the board.  He got off to one of the worst starts ever, but I think he is learning the norms of this board.

But, Shepherd, if you EVER get into another 'holier-than-thou' routine, count me out!

Mr. Ypsi,

Well said and I agree.

Shepherd,

I do believe that Elmhurst has earned some respect throughout the league this year.  Not sure how many starters are coming back next year, but I believe from posts made during the season that it could be quite a few.  Jaybird, can you let us know about this.  This may be a season that the Jays can build on.  From Jaybird's posts, it sounds like many of the pieces are in place.  Who knows, in a few years they could have a turnaround similar to what has taken place at NCC.  Any way you look at it, the CCIW continues to get stronger and more competitive each year.  Now if we can just get a team through the always brutal North region and into the Stagg Bowl.

and just when shepherd started to calm down....thanks zorbadageek...shepherd don't respond.  On that note couldn't be happier to see the Augie/Wheaton game live.  So nothing at all with any conference or any game won by any amount of points by any scenario still would not be enough to give Wheaton a glimmer of hope?  Well anyway...should be a great game...history shows that to be the case...its going to weird to be just a fan though. Lets go Wheaton..."If we have to go down, we go down with bullets in our chests, not in our backs"- Swider

mugsy-1999 it was. good memory. especially on the 1986 augie/wheaton game. a huge heartbreaker akin to the tough loss ncc just faced.

hiker- i will work on using my shift key. its just that bad habits are hard to break.

shepherd-where will you be at the game? i would gladly come say hi. i think elmhurst has turned a corner and has a chance to be a top tier cciw team soon. they have a committment to the program and seem to be keeping their younger players in the program, which is a big key to winning.

augie6-i remember seeing you play. you were much more than a waterboy. in fact i wish you had been a waterboy, wheaton would have fared better back then.

i would be surprised if wheaton played andrews the whole game. chupp is a better qb but has had a rough year making decisions. I would like nothing better than to send augie to the playoffs with a reminder of who really is the king of the hill  8)

Wheaty,

Great quote from Swider.  I'll have to remember it for the motivational talks at work.

The first year not playing is tough.  It gets better over time, but not much.  I still miss it every season and always will.

What info do you have to base on that "Chupp is the better quarterback"?

Mr. Ypsi

wheaty,

I'm afraid you about summed up Wheaton's chances!  If they somehow beat Augie by 70-0, they might have a 2% chance of the play-offs (IF NCC lost to NP), but, alas, they are basically toast.

SOMEDAY, a conference will get three teams into the tourney, but not yet (and I suspect the OAC will break the barrier before the CCIW or WIAC).

wheaty- that's just my opinion based on watching them both over the past two years. obviously i am not the only who thinks that since the coaches picked chupp last year over andrews. chupp has struggled this year and frank deserves a chance to play and he has done well.

from a purely subjective viewpoint chupp throws a better ball, is more athletic, faster and a little more savvy. andrews is a tough guy, executes, runs well but labors to throw the ball. the long pass he threw to wr chupp v north park should have been picked off but the safety let it go thru his hands. frank threw the ball late. alternatively, chupp threw a long pass to fossum down the left sideline off a double move that was underthrown slightly, but he delivered the ball on time (threw it while fossum was making his move) so the safety didn't have enough time to get there. chupps ball should have been a td if he got it out there, but his timing prevented an int. franks pass was late and slightly underthrown. thats just one example of why i think chupp is better. its mostly just my opinion.

wheaty

So you must be in agreement with me that Chupp should sit the rest of the year and use it to learn and stay healthy right?  He has at least earned that with 17 interceptions...which is mostly a coaching error for leaving him in past 10 interceptions.  And the interesting thing is that the quarterbacks last year were graded to be picked last year based on a plus/minus program based on each preseason practice...believe it or not Chupp won out on one plus.  That being said they are both great quarterbacks and whether or not you see it as default or not...it has been more than time for Frank's turn.

on the what if front-if wheaton had beaten IWU then wheaton would have to beat augie by more than 15 points to win the AQ. i think thats right. the 2nd tiebreaker is pt differential between the tied teams and it would have been ncc, augie, wheaton at 6-1.

also, 2 plays that changed wheaton's season:

1)with wheaton trailing 21-20 and just over 4 min to go v ncc they were driving for a go ahead score. on 3rd down in ncc territory mario smith picks off a j chupp pass and returns it 57 yds for a td and a 28-20 lead. ncc goes on to win 35-26.

2)with wheaton leading 14-10 and 10+ minutes to play at iwu, wheaton is driving for the game clinching score. on 1st down in titan territory, chupp badly overthrows a wide open fossum that would have been a clinching score. the next play, damon banks intercepts a chupp screen pass and returns it 55 yds for the game winning score. wheaton loses 23-14.

both of these plays were huge momentum changers that highlight the subtle differences between playing for a conference championship on the last week of the season and just trying to finish strong.

usee

wheaty- i totally agree with you. while i think chupp gives wheaton a better chance to go down the field and win a game if they have to, frank andrews won't lose a game for you as chupp has this year. i would have given chupp the hook after his 10th int for sure and think the coaches were way too slow making a change.

usee

having said that, i would definately play chupp v augie (alternate as they have been doing). he is going to be your qb next year and he needs to fight through this with nothing on the line vs playing a sr in his last game. so i would alternate them early in the game and then play the qb down the stretch that you feel gives you the best chance to win.

The counter was one of our key plays during Reade's tenure.  As dansand mentioned, the wingback position (Velasquez, the Bob Guerrieri/Dennis Fraikes combo, and Fraikes in 1987) had multiple seasons of over 1000 yards during this period.  Our qb's during this time were typically less than 200 yds rushing for the season.

They ran it yesterday,  J.J. got the carry...the LB stayed home and LEVELED McDowell.  Actually that was one in a long line of some serious hits on Saturday from both teams.  I am sure there was plenty of work on the training table for both squads.
