Comment about Chiefs game last night:

QuoteDefensive Grit and a pick-six – Chiefs defenders were bringing the wood last night on defense. There were several big hits and, despite some miscues, the "D" made some big stops when they needed to. They escaped danger on multiple occasions, allowing over 400 yards of total offense, but holding Seattle to just 14 points. Flowers' pick-six got the crowd into the game early and LB Andy Studebaker logged a sack, as did DE Tyson Jackson. The defense has played with a high-motor this preseason, something that seemed to be lacking at times in 2008.

Since it's slow, here's the Pantagraph article about the IWU-Benedictine scrimmage yesterday.  Not putting a lot of stock into the performance.  I would expect a defense returning 10 starters and a summer game in Europe to control Benedictine's offense.  The real show starts next week.
Hail, Hail, the gang's all here, all out for Wesleyan!

NPU scrimmaged NAthCon preseason favorite Aurora out in the western suburbs on Saturday. Aurora scored one touchdown, and that constituted the only points scored in the scrimmage. The important thing is that the Vikings emerged unscathed, injurywise. If they stay healthy this week, they'll enter next Saturday night's opener against Carroll with 101 active players on the roster, which as far as I know is an unprecedented feat for NPU.

Yeah, you win with quality rather than quantity, but this is still a step forward for the North Park football program. I can remember years in which the Vikings would have fewer than forty players suiting up by the end of the season.

I am surprised how quiet this board is with opening games this weekend for six teams in the conference.
This weeks schedule:
Augustana (Ill.) at Coe, 1 p.m.
Hope at Illinois Wesleyan, 1 p.m.
Illinois College at Millikin, 1 p.m.
North Central (Ill.) at Ohio Northern, 12:30 p.m., EDT
Elmhurst at Benedictine (Ill.), 7 p.m.
Carroll (Wis.) at North Park, 7 p.m.

Hope is again playing three teams from the CCIW this season.

Yikes... I need to get the CCIW Pick-Em's rules out tonight!  Look for it by morning.

well put

Tim Rucks had some very large turnouts in the early 90's

Gene Mitz started one season with 28 guys on the roster

When North Park beat North Central 104 to 32 in 1968 they had 33 players dressed - north central had less than that.
I am determined to be wise, but this was beyond me.

Pete Ittersagen has made it past the first official cut line of 75 for the Jacksonville Jaguars.  Next week is the big cut down to the regular season roster of 53.

Given he is listed as 4th string CB, he was undrafted and from D3, it is highly unlikely he'll make the active roster.  Practice squad would be outstanding.

Is anyone still alive on Post Patterns?  It's opening week and all the pages are DEAD.  The OAC page is really quiet and hoped there would be something in here with NCC/ONU.

No comments on my 19.5 spread?

FYI, I picked NCC too ;D

I find easily offended people rather offensive!

I've been wondering the same thing.  Seems like this season is sneaking up on us.  Very little discussion to this point on where teams are at in preparation.  Very little speculation... Very little news from camps...

Hopefully it'll pick up soon.

What are everyone's thoughts on the NCC/ONU contest? I know NCC took down ONU 20-3 in Naperville last year. The "Around the Region - Midwest" column on the front page makes it sound like NCC could be in for a fight. I wouldn't expect less from an OAC team, but shouldn't NCC's talent be too much for ONU to handle?

I guess it's the first game of the season, so mistakes will happen, just a matter of who makes less. If NCC plays error-free (or close) and ONU plays error-free, I would expect NCC to come out on top by double digits. If NCC has a few early season hiccups I could see ONU stealing this one (or at least making the Cards sweat).
You win! You always do!

Mr. Flynn

Is Ohio Northern supposed to be improved much from last year?  I honestly figured NC would win by at least 30 considering they got the majority of their talent back and they all got a little bigger, faster, and stronger.  I hear that the O-line is alot bigger too.

Update from Jaguars website regarding the final day battles for roster spots:

QuoteDefensive backs—Rashean Mathis, Sean Considine, Brian Williams and Reggie Nelson are the starters. Derek Cox was supposed to make Williams a possible roster decision, but Cox has yet to play a preseason game. Gerald Alexander, Brian Witherspoon, Tyron Brackenridge, Marlon McCree and Scott Starks are likely keepers. Rookie cornerback Pete Ittersagen is a threat and could close the ground with a top game on Thursday. Ittersagen and fellow undrafted rookie Michael Desormeaux would certainly be practice-squad candidates.

From history of how many undrafted, rookie free agents the Jaguars keep each year, practice-squad is looking like Pete's best chance.  Here's hoping he has a great game tomorrow.  Go get-em Pete!

6k a week for 16 weeks...not a bad entry-level position.
