Been watching the NFL sites and still nothing up about the Chiefs or the Jags final cuts.  Only thing I've seen so far is local KC paper predicts Studebaker making the team and Jax paper predicts Ittersagen on the practice squad.
Hail, Hail, the gang's all here, all out for Wesleyan!

I think it is pretty safe to say Studebaker will make the Chiefs, as he has consistently been listed as a 2nd string OLB.  Today the Chiefs released 13 players, including 14 year veteran LB Zach Thomas.  Looking at the roster on their website, it is down to 53 players.

I'm still not seeing the roster moves by the Jags.

keep your heads up, North Central fans .... I had the pleasure of talking with a few of you during the postseason last year and I know your team is going to use todays game to leap into the conference season.  I still consider NC to be a favorite to make the "elite 8" of the D3 playoffs and meet Mount Union.

Long season ahead... and lots of talent on that team of yours.

Ittersagen was cut by the Jaguars: http://www.jaguars.com/news/article.aspx?id=8174

I certainly think he's made the most of his opportunity so far. Hopefully he'll get signed to the practice squad tomorrow or find another team with greater need at cornerback.

North Park defeated Carroll, 17-10. Shelby Wood completed a couple of long TD passes to Evan Christiansen and Chris Anton, and the defense did the rest. This was a solid turnaround win for NPU; last year up in Waukesha, Carroll whipped the Vikings, 55-14 -- and Carroll returned 14 starters from last year's 7-3 team, including ten on offense. But the NPU defense stood them up; on two different drives the Pioneers had first and goal and were kept out of the end zone, only tallying three points for their pains.

if I was a north park fan, I'd keep my eye on calvin gant and evan christianson.

Nice call, deepthroat. Christiansen caught the long TD bomb, and Gant had an interception and two huge pass breakups deep in Vikings territory in the fourth quarter.

Hey, don't blame the SID for the technological problem -- live stats were not working because of an internet glitch.

The Vikings played a solid game all around to defeat Carroll 17-10.  Shelby Wood completed a few long passes including a double-reverse flea flicker (or whatever you'd call it) of 54 yards for the game-winning TD, and the North Park defense come up big with several 3-and-outs in the second half.  Congratulations to North Park players and coaches for starting off 2009 on the right foot!

Question of the day for North Park fans?

when was the last time North Park held an opponent scoreless in the 2nd half of a victory while kicking a forty-yard field goal?

Nice win for the Vikings.

And as my son said its nice to see the team sing the school fight song at the end of the game - next week they need to learn the right words.

I am determined to be wise, but this was beyond me.

Was that a 40-yarder?  I wasn't sure of the distance.

I'd hazard a guess that it would be a first for the Vikings because a 40-yard FG would tie for 6th all-time (according to the latest media guide, the others happened in 1967, 1968, 1976, 1980, 1992, 1993, and 2002).  It would take some digging to find the box scores for those games, especially the earlier ones.  The 2002 game was against the U of Chicago, which the Vikings lost, 33-9, so that wouldn't be a good candidate.  Four of the games were against Augustana, and the other opponents were Elmhurst and Carthage.

The box score is now posted, and Bryn Nottoli's FG is listed as a 41-yarder. That's a little generous, as I distinctly remember the ball being launched from squarely on the 30-yard line. But better to overestimate the distance than underestimate it.

It's funny to see Rakim Jones credited with zero catches for eleven yards in the passing game. That's not an error, by the way -- he was on the back end of a successful hook-and-ladder play in the first half.

From everything I've read, this certainly wasn't unexpected.  That being said, those same articles seemed to believe Pete was a good candidate for the practice squad.  Fingers crossed that is the case.  Certainly, all CCIW fans are behind him and wish him the best.

I am sorry to hear Pete was cut, I guess we all expected it but were hoping it wouldn't happen.  I looked this up in the players association CBA.

NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement, Article XXXIV
Section 1. Practice Squads: (a) The League may elect in any League Year in accordance with this Article to establish practice squads not to exceed eight 8 players per Club.

Section 3. Salary: Minimum salary for a practice squad player shall be $4700 per week for the 2006-07 League Years, $5200 per week for the 2008-10 League Years........

I imagine that is per week only for the season.  Also, I had no idea the practice squad is only 8 players.

Will NCC stay in the top 10?  They will be 2-1 going into CCIW play and should still be the favorite to win the conference.

Congrats to the Kohawks and Polar Bears, they beat teams that were favored to beat them yesterday.

I don't know if 3 times in the last 4 years counts as a trend, but it has been 3 out of 4 years that North Central has had an unexpected early season loss (2006 v Concordia Wis, 2007 v Wash U {Unfortunate injury to Fanthorpe}, and now 2009 v ONU).  In the long run, it didn't end up hurting them as they made the playoffs in 06 & 07.  I just think it is strange how that has seemed to happen to them on a number of occaisions the past few seasons.  ???   However, its not as if they were playing patsies either.

I was surprised how Millikin thrashed Illinois College.  Maybe that program is getting back on its previous track.  Been a few lean years for the Big Blue.

Good win for IWU, although it will be interesting to see if Hope improved over last year as the season plays out.
Exiciting game for the Parkers.  Will this finally be the CCIW win for the Vikings?

Mugsy,

Were you or any of your buddies able to catch the Wheaton/Wabash scrimmage yesterday?  I was interested in your thoughts on both teams.

Thanks,
