Looks like Carthage defeated Millikin 41-28.  Another big night for Jones with 300 yards passing and 3 TD's, though he continues to throw a lot of interceptions (3 more tonight).

Game was 14 all at half before Carthage opened it up in the 3rd quarter with 20 unanswered points.

There were alot of NCC fans posting how the Cards would trounce IWU. While I thought that, I didn't want to jump on the bandwagon and post my thoughts about how the Cards were going to trounce the Spartans. I wasn't at the game, it sounded like it was a GREAT game to watch.
Kudos to the IWU defense for limiting the Cardinal "O" to 22 points, the IWU "O" for scoring 28 on the Cardinal "D" and to the freshman NCC qb for coming in and doing a GREAT job in Fanthorpe's absence.

Here we go.................C'MON WHEATON (cringe)!

CARDS, LET'S GO GET AUGIE!!!!!!!!!!!

To that, my only response is: IWU 42, Carthage 16 (seemingly Ladd's last healthy game).

Looks like Ryan Coleman shares this perspective in "Triple Take" ---- Sounds like it could be a great game.

New Top 25 out:

Wheaton moves up slightly to #12 (jumped by St. Thomas & Thomas More)
North Central falls to #18
Illinois Wesleyan rockets to #19 (not even receiving votes previously, so a 171 vote jump in 1 week)

I know that there is going to be a lot of focus on the NCC vs. IWU game this week but as far as another game that could go either way would be the Millikin vs. Carthage game. I am interested to see how this one plays out.

Millikin has two losses on the season and both have been to Wheaton & NCC (combined score of 99-7). Millikin but ended up beating IWU by a slim margin. Carthage lost pretty badly to IWU so it will be interesting to see how this one plays out. It is always tough to beat Carthage at home and Millikin doesn't seem to have the high power offense I expected them to have. My prediction:

Carthage: 38
Millikin: 21

Jones with 4 TD passes and 1 int (Jeff Koeneman and Nick Merchut 2 TD's each)

I am also predicting that Augie will win as planned and Wheaton will bounce back to knock off Elmhurst.

I guess I was pretty close to this result being that it was 41-28 Carthage wins. I was off by one TD pass and 2 INT's though. Wheaton and Augie won but I realized that I never made an official prediction for the NCC @ IWU game. I did pick NCC in the pick-ums so I am going to have to go with that and say that I am far from perfect  ;D

CCIW Predictions 2009

I was waiting for someone to make the first move on this but have had this written down since the beginning of the week. Here are my predictions:

1. North Central 6-1 (Winning the head to head vs. Wheaton)
2. Wheaton 6-1
3. Augie 4-3
4. Millikin 4-3
5. Carthage 3-4
6. IWU 3-4
7. Elmhurst 2-5
8. North Park 0-7
If NCC beats Wheaton, who do they lose to?

While NCC did it last year, I think that it is very difficult and says a lot about a team to go 7-0 in this conference. CCIW teams typically go deep into the playoffs because of the difficult conference schedule (one of the reasons I wanted to play in the CCIW). This is not a knock on NCC by any means but they have had a couple key injuries and I also feel that some of the "middle of the pack" teams have really improved this year (Millikin, Carthage, IWU).

To answer your question: I picked Augie to beat them but could see an upset from IWU/ Carthage this year. My reasons for IWU/ Carthage: key injuries to the NCC defense and both high yardage/ scoring offenses.

I also dug this one out of the archives just to reference. I think if I switched IWU and Millikin I would be pretty close overall. Once again, it is very difficult to go 7-0 in this conference and that is a credit to all of the teams in the CCIW. It will be interesting to see how this one plays out in the next two weeks. There could be a number of different scenarios that could play out and while I can't agree on just one I would definitely like to see some predictions this week.

Ps. I think it is great that we have 3 top 25 teams ranked in our conference! Augie, Carthage and Millikin are just peeking in from the outside at 5-3 and Elmhurst is at .500. It would be great to have 7 teams finish above .500 this year and it could be likely with Elmhurst playing Millikin this week. I don't think this has happend in some time looking at the previous records in D3.

What's really gonna be interesting is seeing all the Cardinal fans have to hold their noses and root for Wheaton next week! :o ;D

Why would we have to hold our noses to root for Wheaton? NCC needs Wheaton to win next week and lose the following to have any shot at the play-offs and they have noone to blame but themselves.

Hate to say "I told you so", but it feels so good.  But in all seriousness, NCC played a heckuva game.  The fact that they still were right with the Titans with their backup QB in is a testament to their depth and quality of coaching.  My hat's off to my Titans, but I pick it up, put it back on, and tip it to the Cardinals.

as long as you didn't drop your hat in mud.. ..  but thats a good way to ruin a great hat.  try to not drop it again.

in all seriousness though ---- what are everyone's thoughts on the Wheaton/IWU tilt?

After watching IWU rip through NCC's defense with ease, I think IWU will win, but I'm still hoping that Wheaton can pull it out.

If ONU wins out (has Capital this week) then I would expect that ONU would have the edge on NCC based on the Head to Head and strong finish by ONU (losses to MUC and Otterbein).

IMHO, the winner of the Ohio Northern at Capital showdown this weekend would be ahead of NCC in the Pool C pecking order based on ONU's head-to-head win in the season opener over NCC.   An 8-2 Bethel would probably be right there in the discussion too with NCC after the ONU/Capital.

I find easily offended people rather offensive!

There's been a lot of discussion on other parts of the board whether a two loss team could get in this year as a Pool C team. With the number of one loss teams, it seemed unlikely. With the loss to ONU, it is extremely unlikely that a two loss NCC could get in. It appears that the second place team in the OAC will have two losses. That doesn't help NCC.

Watching the Titans sprint across the field and make a dogpile in the end zone after the winning TD pass was awesome enough to make me care less about the condition of my hat.  A hat is nothing compared to a big win over a good team when the Titans' playoff hopes were on the line.
