Mr. Ypsi

Based on the Simpson press release (FAR more informative than IWU's, including the stat sheet), the game in Bloomington must have been rather exciting, however disappointing it was.  The game was still very much in doubt until a Titan pass was intercepted in the end zone with 25 seconds left!

One possible bright spot for the Titans would be special teams defense - they blocked BOTH extra point attempts!  (On the other hand, I noticed that they were by two different kickers, so maybe it says more about Simpson's kicking game!)

I also noticed that attendance was listed as 1,000 - even for Labor Day weekend, that is appalling!  Were any posters among that 'throng', to give some first hand impressions?

Redmen down 6-7 at halftime.  I'm kind of  surprised by some of the scores today.   An Augie loss at home is really shocking.

Reidy will you be at homecoming?  I'll be there for sure!
HEY NORM, I LOST YOUR HAT! GO REDMEN!!!

How do you post a picture under your user name?  Any help would be a Plus!

We will always be REDMEN

Mr. Ypsi

I see NP beat Kentucky Wesleyan (23-13).  In bball, such a win would call for champagne, if not Champaign  ;D (KW has MANY d2 national championships) - I'm guessing that KW is more into bball than fball!!

Still, is this a significant win for NP (enough to reconsider the predictions for the CCIW season), or is KW THAT bad in fball?  ???

While I was typing this, I got the Carthage final - while a win is a win, is such a close game a good sign or a bad sign?

Sica-sica,
I hardly think Central allowing 329 yards would qualify as "shutting down the run." As far as Augie's passing game goes; they've had a heck of a lot of success in the last 25 years without big passing numbers. As has been discussed for much of the preseason (and is nearly unanimously agreed upon by Augie posters), Augie's defense is the big problem. I missed today's game, but looking at the box score, it's still a big problem. Central averaged 5.2 yards  a carry and completed 62% of their passes. That's just not good enough to compete for a CCIW title. If they don't improve, I 'm afraid they're probably destined for a middle-of-the-pack finish.

North Park led 23-8 early in the fourth qtr when I left  with the two kids.  NP never had two RBs in the backfield, usually deploying 4 or 5 receivers.  NPU QB Haehn is probably the best passing QB in the CCIW, but he must get rid of the ball quickly and is hampered by the lack of a forceful running game.  Regardless, he's got several quality receivers.  KWC is a D2 school that does not grant scholarships to the football team.  While the KWC OL was big, they were not mobile.  The smaller NPU DL consistently hurried the QB.  Through 3 qtrs, NP had inexplicably not thrown deep.  Perhaps the coach recognized Haehn did not have time.  NP's defense looked good against this opponent - once stopping them on two downs inside the two with a first down to give.  I believe NPU will beat Eureka and Elmhurst, perhaps sneaking up on another CCIW opponent.

I was right- Carthage is way overrated.  They have a defense, but I doubt much else.  Who is playing RB for them?  I thought they might move one of those athletes from defense to play TB.

As far as Augie's passing attack, I think that topic should be banned from discussion.  Sure, I'd never want to play for Augoe, but they have one of the most effective game plans out there offensively, however it seems their defense has been bad for a while,.  The thing about Augie the last two years was the defense was good early on, but now theyre allowing those kinds of stats to teams with non-returning starters in week 1 AT HOME- this is a bad, bad sign.  I heard ssomeone else is coaching on defense for them... what happened there?  Didn't they have like 5 DCs in the last 5 years?

And I truly disagree about NPU.  I'll stick by that.  They have a good coach, but they have a bad school.

sica-sica

They won`t win the cciw this year passing that much in a game.

JAYBACKER

Elmhurst 52-6 over Benedictine-- 3rd and 4th string played last qtr and a half---lost shutout with 50 seconds to go. Only 9 total yds given up by Jay D in 1st half. It's going to be an interesting year.

Well at the same time it is a surprise, it isnt that Augie didnt make many passes.  Augie (up until the last few years) hasnt been a passing defense.  With the recruiting of more recievers they have been doing a lot of it as opposed to many years past.  Augie offense has always been centered around the run.  The run is what has worked for them the best.  I know you cannot run the ball EVERY play but you stick with what works.  I only hope that the trip to D. C. isnt a crappy one.  On a side note...did Travis Shea play the whole game on defense?  I hear Barnes started a Sophomore over Shea?!?!  Something I find ridiculous...nothing against the questionable starter.  IF thats what I heard right.

Not sure if Shea started or not.  He was in for most of the game that I know of.  It could have been one of those things like not starting, but in for the second play?  I do know that he had a personal foul called on him for unsportsmanlike conduct after a turnover....

sica-you are pretty uninformed about augie if you think their number of passes will have any effect on their success.

Dan I think that you are correct.  You know three passes thrown by Roe all game.  One incomplete, one for 47 yards to Anthony, and one long floater for an INT.  Non-Augie people forget that the only traditional throwing QB that played on Ericson Field is Ken Anderson and that ship sailed long ago.  The QBs that find their way to Rock Island are ones that are good with hand deception and strong enough to run option.  Remember it was Roe who (I believe) set the NCAA record, if not the D3 record for QB rushing yards in a game last year with something like 327yds.  Yes, I know that was in a losing effort, but my point is different style, so a different player.

augievike-you are correct on roe last year. that was vs cciw champ wheaton. by the way, guess how many passes roe threw in that game?? before the desparation last possesion he threw 2 incomplete passes.
