and another big if..

If John Thorne would have left Wheaton Warrenville South in 1998 and came to North Central, the Cardinals would have 10 Championships this decade

John Thorne wouldn't have left  WWS in 98, he could have left in 99 after hurdler Jon Schweighardt graduated (he is the last hurdler to win state in both the 110 and 300 hurdles in the same year).   :)

So I was thinking the other day about the "CCIW team of the decade".  Here is some of the pertinent data points I dug up:

TeamTotal RecordPlayoff RecordCCIW Championships
Augustana73-302-21 Outright, 2 Co-Champs
Carthage60-432-1 (04' Quarterfinals)1 Co-Champs
Illinois Wesleyan58-41TBD4 Co-Champs
Millikin55-460-11 Co-Champs
North Central74-333-41 Outright, 3 Co-Champs
Wheaton89-248-5 (03' Quarterfinals, 08' Semifinals)2 Outright, 3 Co-Champs

Couple notes:

1. Only 4 outright CCIW Champions in the decade, multiple 3 way ties.

2. While a wide representation of teams in the playoffs for the decade (6 of 8 teams), not too much progress in terms of making it deep into the playoffs.

3. Overall playoff record for the CCIW in the decade was 15-13 (8 of 13 losses to Mount Union, often within North Region).  How many more playoff victories would CCIW gained if MUC was moved to others regions, as they have of late?

4. While Wheaton led with 5 CCIW Championships, North Central has 4 in a row.  Illinois Wesleyan "quietly" collected 4.

5. Carthage had the stellar, breakout year in 04' and has been competitive since, but not to the same level.

6. Millikin was strong in 00' & 01', but struggled since until this year.

7. In the category of "a big if", but Wheaton could have been an 8 time CCIW champ in the decade if not for 2 heart breaking games against IWU and one against NCC.

Ha... very nice.

If Mugsy was still coaching Wheaton would have 11 CCIW championships in ten years one given just because he is Mugsy. ;D :P

These last few posts kind of remind me of "In the Year 2000" on Conan.

Great Story-too bad Bear management would never go for it.

Quote from: Gregory Sager on November 18, 2009, 06:07:07 PMNorth Park always pays the price for cranking out preachers, teachers, and nurses rather than captains of industry or people who can invent things like sugar-coated peanuts or hand tools that snap together. ;)

Sager - That line cracked me up, but I take personal offense to it.  There's nothing wrong with cranking out preachers, and NPU does not have the market cornered on producing preachers.  I'm still working on my own alcohol-related snack food.

Didn't say that it did. If North Park did have the market cornered on producing preachers, though, TV evangelists would be a lot more sedate. ;)

Either the hard-boiled egg or the "blind robin" (smoked herring) is about due for a comeback, Robb. Back the right horse!

(In Bavaria, the traditional beer-related snack food is the weeping radish, a large white radish cut into spirals and salted so that the water inside it "weeps" out. Sounds strange, but it's very tasty.)

The imagery of any of the Covenant pastors from my church over the years as a TV evangelist gave me quite a chuckle.   ;D

I've been around for a while oldnuthin, but rather sporadically over the last few years.  I have lived out of state for a while now and do not get a chance to see many games, so I don't really like throwing my opinions in too often if I don't have a first hand view to support them.

I can see from your # of posts you have been around awhile. The gist of my post was not intended to be negative, just that if Millikin keeps improving i will not be the "lone gunman" for them around here. Just in the little over a year that i have been on here, the bulk of the posters have been from NCC & Wheaton, which I think is a correlation to the success of both programs. I am just hoping for more success to equate to more posters as seems to be the case with all the recent IWU posters. I have seen IWU 3 times this season and am very impressed with their team, staff and the way the go about their business. Good Luck With Wabash.

Unlike most conferences, the CCIW has regulars from every team, but posts naturally tend to be more frequent with success (though we were minus Millikin 'til you appeared).  If memory serves, Millikin is the only 'absentee' on the basketball board also - you stickin' around this winter? ;)
