Mr. Ypsi

Don't worry - I don't think the NCAA has any say on poster names!  ;)

That's Pat's department.  ;D

Why not just take the top 8 teams?!  A victory over Augustana on Saturday would be huge, and reading usee's synopsis, I like Wheaton by 10.

It really says a lot about our conference when we have 3 of the top 8 teams in the region.  Carthage could easily be in that mix as well.

Pat,

At what level do I get to give out karma?  I didn't see that in the FAQ.  I still want to send dansand some for the grassy knoll post.  That post is my nomination for post of the year!!!

One additional bit of motivation that could work in Wheaton's favor against Augustana that hasn't been mentioned yet.  It is Coach J.R. Bishop's last game at Wheaton College after 24 years, 14 has head coach.

Taken from the Wheaton College website:
"Coach J.R. Bishop begins his 24th season at Wheaton and his tenth as associate head coach and offensive coordinator. As Wheaton's head coach from 1982-95, Bishop turned around the school's football fortunes, guiding it to a record of 84-43-1 in 14 years. Wheaton had won just five games in the three years before his arrival.

Bishop was named CCIW Coach of the Year in 1991 and 1995 and earned AFCA Regional Coach of the Year honors in 1995 when he directed Wheaton to its first CCIW football title since 1959 and its first-ever NCAA playoff berth. Wheaton was 10-1 that year with a playoff win over Wittenberg.

Bishop came to Wheaton after a highly successful high school coaching career. A 1961 graduate of Franklin College (Ind.), Bishop has coached at Franklin and Lawrence Central High Schools in Indiana, and Naperville Central High School in Illinois. In 20 seasons his teams posted a 126-63-3 record, and he finished his head coaching career with 210 wins, 106 losses and four ties in 34 years."

I know the team wanted to send Coach Bishop out with another CCIW championship and playoff run, but it's not to be.  I know they will lay it all out on the line to send him out with a victory.  There will be a lot of alumni at the game.

Personally, he is one of the reasons why I went to Wheaton to play football.  I have the utmost respect for Coach Bishop, not only as a football coach, but as a man of integrity and character.  He did things the right way.  He'll be sorely missed and I wish him all the best.

Mugsy- great point. JR Bishop is a huge reason wheaton football is where it is today. i remember the days of the air bishop express watching his son keith throw it 65x a game (keith is now the qb coach). and how many coaches can be a head coach somewhere for 13 years and then become an assistant for the next 10? great man. everyone likes JR bishop.

Why not just take the top 8 teams?!

the only problem with that is there are 3 teams that are AQ's below.

one thing of note is capital is now #5 and appears the most probable of any 2 loss teams to have a shot. if the committee were to choose them over coe or Cal Luth from the west, then the north is set and this is the pairings:

Wabash
muc
augie
ncc
capital
mt st joe
albion
lakeland

in this scenario augie hosts mt st joe and ncc hosts capital in the first round. I think if augie loses to wheaton saturday they probably drop down to 5 or 6 and have to take their show on the road. ncc would be the benefactor and could host a mt st joe in round 1. bottom line i think if augie loses to wheaton ncc is a lock to host in round 1.

I am a happy supporter of the Wing-T.  Not only was it there while I was at Augie, but at my High School as well.  Of course Bob Reade only got 3 consecutive state championships there before he moved up to the job at Rock Island.  I could watch that system everyday of the week and be very happy.  Luckily there are enough programs in the Quad Cities area that use it.  I can almost always catch someone using it.

Ah... yes, I remember a Wheaton North/Geneso Darnell state championship game in 1981.  Geneso ran the wing-t with precision.  Wheaton was stacked that year with 2 rb's with over 1500 yards and at least 6-7 DI scholarship players.  If I recall it was a 14-6 win for Wheaton.

Mugsy,
I think that nailed it on the score.  The coach was different by then though...Larry Johnson Sr.  You may recognized the name.  He has been a constant on the Augie sideline I believe since 86.  Of course the Geneseo coach is different now too...Larry Johnson JR.  (of course he played at Augie).

Also I knew that the Bears were originally from Decauter. Did you know that Rock Island had a professional football team at one time?

the Rock Island Independents.  One of their players was Jim Thorpe.  Also the there was an NBA team that originated there.  Originally they were known as the Tri-City Blackhawks.  They have moved a few times since they left the area, but are known with their shortened name:  The Atlanta Hawks.  They were coached at one point by Red Auerbach before he went to the Celtics.  Also Bob Coosey played for them right out of college.

And not by just one call but many calls and "non calls". The evidence is clear and indisputable for anyone who cares about fair play and not blinded by the win at all cost mentality.

I guess you must be referring to the defensive pass interference call when the Augie receiver 20 yards down field and was blocked out of bounds by the NCC defender and the ball landed one yard out of bounds.  The official said it was uncatchable because of how far out of bounds.  Or was it the other non call of pass interfererce when the Augie receiver was leveled in the middle of the field just as the ball left Roe's hands?  Were those the two non-calls that you were referring to in your post?

I think Central is within 200 miles, and therefore in-region.

It is about 179 miles to Pella from RI.

Pat,
I checked the FAQ and didn't see this so here I my question.  At what number of posts do you advance to a higher level? (JV, 2nd string, All-American, etc.)

dansand

Thanks cardinalalum.

I was just trying to keep things in perspective.

Mugsy-  I have met and had some great discussions with JR Bishop and he is a class act and a great football mind.
I'm not familiar with Monmouth's program but usually our conf. favors better in matchups against MWC opponents.  Where would Monmouth fit in the CCIW this year?
Also, after reading what the NCAA mentions/rules with the mascot issues, is Carthage still going to change their logo and get rid of the feathers?  I hope not, b/c I like the helmet just the way it is.  As a hockey player, people could raise debates about the Chicago Blackhawks, it's a shame we have to deal with a topic like this when it's just a name.
