It is also important to remember that the Top 25 poll does not have any affect (effect?) on the selections for the playoffs.  Look here to see how the teams in the playoffs are picked: http://www.d3football.com/faq.php?answer&category=Playoffs&id=4

Willamette's win was certainly a quality win - on the road, against the #2 team in the WIAC, and an impressive performance. Hardin Simmons win didn't seem too convincing to me but like you said, it's the first week and it's just noise. They only jumped up one spot. Interesting, maybe not, that both teams that moved up involved games with NWC teams.

I really don't think the game against Cornell had anything to do with NCC's move in the top25. They did what they were expected to do. The reason NCC fell is because Willamette and Hardin Simmons (the two teams that moved ahead of them) had strong wins on the road against good opponents. This was "new" information for the pollsters and they responded by moving those teams up on their ballots. The vote change for NCC from a statistical perspective is just "noise" and likely not reflective voters opinions. This will sort itself out as things move along. Remember, Wheaton was ranked as high as #4 last year before not making the playoffs and finishing unranked.

Frequently read during the season, but never posted...just an old Wheaton Crusader!...here we go!  :)  Any news on a Wheaton scrimmage this past weekend?  Was it the usual Wabash warmup?  Anyone hear what happened to Charlie Velling (RB) and Nic O'Neal (DL) from last year?  Odd that two major contributors to a Wheaton football team, upperclassmen at that, don't return...slightly reminiscent of 1988?  That's just not Wheatonesque!

After a sluggish start,  which I anticipated,  Elmhurst put together a good showing on opening day.  The DL really came through for EC in the second half.  Certainly some things to strengthen up prior to CCIW time,  but that could be said for every team.
If you have never been to Loras, I advise going there, as the campus, stadium/pressbox, and the Dubuque area along the river are very picturesque.  I wish we could have been going there a little later in the season when the foliage would be in full swing.

thanks bash, the little guy made weight, but lost the game. he had a couple of sacks and his team fought back from a 22-0 deficit only to lose 30-18. It was along weekend and really had to digest what I saw on Saturday. Dion Wilson is a horse, 5 tds and 278 rushing is impressive, but the sledding will be harder in the conference season. Millikin QB did not look impressive at all, but their o-line certainly did. I think when they got up 28-7 everyone thought it was over and eased off the gas pedal.  they have several new players in the secondary, and it showed as the game went on, missed assignments and on one play they were grossly mis-aligned. that is to be expected in your first game i think. i know the coaches will fix that. Their secondary has some very impressive athletes and they were not happy with their performance. It would be easy to brag that they held IC to minus rushing yards, but this is IC after all. They will face a tough test next week against a talented hope team that gave Wheaton a tough time last year. Definitely the best sub 500 team i ever saw. Good luck to you and your son, except on the 25th.

Heh! Easterbrook caught NPU in the midst of its website overhaul, with just some placeholder text on the president's page.

But, hey, I'll take a snarky comment about my alma mater on espn.com over no comment at all.

Since you're asking, it's effect. ;)

Nitzer-

Welcome to the board. There is a summary of the scrimmage on the ncac page by bb#16. Velling left school and isn't playing anywhere. Don't know about oneal. Albion gave up almost 300 ids rushing to Butler last weekend. I wonder what Rocky will do?

alas another website overhaul...maybe the 3rd or 4th in as many years and still far behind that of most of the conference schools.  NPU has been and might always be very content with mediocrity all across campus.  It makes to much sense for them to get out of the CCIW and in to the NAC but I know this discussion has been brought up to many times.

Losing 9-7 to lowly Aurora puts the Vikes in position for another long fall.

I'm sure Pat or Keith could answer this but has there ever been any thought to making the d3football.com a TOP 35 instead of a TOP 25?  With the 246 or so teams in D3 it would make sense.  IMHO of course!  ;D

Lakeshore-

It basically is a top 35 now with ORV category. I don't see the benefit of a top 35 and it would seem to water down the rankings unnecessarily. I think #20-35 are awfully hard to differentiate. It seems to me the top 15 are the teams that are pertinent year after year.

Pat Coleman

It would definitely be hard to decide who those next teams on my ballot would be.

Snarky comments are about all an Easterbrook article is good for.  The only reason I ever read his articles are to see cases where he makes comments about D3 football teams which show just how ignorant he is about D3 football in general.
