North Central led Millikin 35-0 at the half and went on to win 38-7. In the process, the Cardinals outgained the Big Blue 448 to 232. Tassio had 3 TDs, Crackel 1 TD, and 6'8" 270 lb tight end Kyle Fiedorowicz hauled in a 78 yd TD pass.

Very impressive catch and run, it was about a 20 yard pass and he outran the Millikin db's for the td.  I never thought I would see that kind of speed from such a big guy.

Stagg Again!!

Very classy play calling by the coaching staffs at NCC and WC in the 2nd half of their games today.  NCC was up 35-0 at the half over MU and ended up winning 38-7.  Backups were in after the 1st NCC series in the 2nd half and no pass attempts were called in the 4th quarter.  WC was up 52-0 over NP at half time and ended up winning 52-7.  No pass attempts were called in the 2nd half and the bench was emptied.

Oy!  I was thinking North Park was showing signs of improvement, but not a good couple of weeks for them.  31-0 only 20 seconds into the 2nd quarter, could have been 59-0 at the half in Wheaton today.  Wheaton did not take a snap with 5 seconds remaining in the half at the North Park 7 yard line.

Wheaton had 3 defensive TD's in the first half (2 fumble returns for TD and one INT for a TD) and a punt return for a TD.  2 of the defensive TD's by J.D. East.

Interesting stats (some odd) from the game:
1. Wheaton only 60 offensive plays, but 21 first downs
2. North Park with 53 rushes, but only 1.9 yards per carry
3. Wheaton with 16 tackles for loss
4. North Park held a 38:31 to 21:29 time of possession advantage, but the Wheaton offense had little opportunity to even see the field in the first half due to the defensive TD's and the punt return for a TD.  NPU offense was on the field most of the 1st half.
5. North Park with only 24 yards of offense in first half

Whoa!  Augie with 450 yards passing... that's right, passing against Carthage tonight.  650 yards total offense for Augie in a 43-16 win.

IWU with 6 turnovers, yet holds off Elmhurst 30-26.  IWU appears to have lost Eli Williams to a knee injury in the 3rd quarter.

4th year in a row that Wheaton has started at least 6-0.  2 of those years Wheaton stumbled badly down the stretch losing multiple games, losing not only the CCIW championship, but any chance of the playoffs.

In the other year (2008), the stumble was just a single game at Elmhurst and Wheaton recovered for one of their best seasons.

Hmm... what will this season hold with Carthage, Augustana, North Central and Millikin remaining?

Wins in all 4 would be a tall order.  3 of 4 would almost assuredly give them a Pool C slot.

Not sure why you thought that, as NPU lost its first two CCIW games by 45-0 and 42-0 scores. This week was bound to be more of the same, and it was.

An NPU alumna friend of mine told me that she was at the game yesterday, which astonished me, since she's not exactly a big NPU sports fan. Turns out that she has a friend whose daughter is a Wheaton student, so she ended up at McCully Field yesterday. She told me in church today that it got so bad for NPU that Wheaton fans were actually cheering for the Vikings to score a TD at the end of the fourth quarter against the Wheaton third string. If having the opposing fans cheer for your team because they feel sorry for it isn't the epitome of humiliation, I don't know what is.

I realize that the intention of the Wheaton fans was good, but this makes me want to see NPU drub Wheaton on the basketball court this winter all that much more.

Their defense had been showing some signs prior to the past 3 weeks.  Hence why I qualified my statement with "not a good couple of weeks." If you can play some defense, you can at least stay in the game.  The North Park slide unfortunately coincides with the start of the CCIW schedule, which does imply they still have a long way to go.

I didn't intend to pile it or gloat over the game. I just though they may have had a better showing this year, but way too many glaring gaffes put them in a huge hole way too early.

I would hope your desire for North Park bball to drub Wheaton would not be on the merit of a couple of Wheaton fans indirectly humiliating North Park "while cheering with good intentions."

What it also implies is that the CCIW is simply light-years beyond other local leagues, this year in particular. Keep in mind that NPU owns a win over the first-place team in the NAthCon, Benedictine. If the Bennies go on and win their league this season, how's it gonna look that they lost a game to a North Park squad that has yet to score a point against opposing first-stringers after three weeks of conference play?

I know that you weren't gloating. But I didn't see any indication in the first two weeks of CCIW play that NPU was going to make yesterday's game a competitive one.

As you well know, Mugsy, I don't need much of a pretext to ramp up my animosity towards Wheaton. A flimsy one is as good as any. ;)

What impressed me on that play was ...

The Millikin DB tipped off that he was blitzing. Crackel stepped back for a second. He knew that the middle of the field would be open and that he also would take a hit. He floated a pass down the middle for Fiedorowicz. Crackel has shown significant improvement in each game that he has played.

New Top 25 poll out:

North Central move up to #6
Not unexpectedly Wheaton remains at #17 after win over North Park

Surprise in the poll is that Wartburg moves from unranked all the way to #13.  Now that is a jump...
Wheaton Football: CCIW Champs: 1950, 1953-1959, 1995, 2000, 2002-2004, 2006, 2008, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2019

I thought that was surprising as well. I guess the voters thought Wartburg is a top 15 team. The result could also mean Coe has been overrated. I was expecting Wartburg to break in around 22 and Coe to drop to 24.

Pat Coleman

From 6 to 24 would have been a gigantic drop.

Mr. Ypsi

Since Coe beat Central, and Wartburg beat Coe, and the voters feel they are all somewhere in the top 25, the jump did not particularly surprise me (I would have guessed about #16).  I was more surprised by how far Central fell second-hand after winning.

And don't forget IWU (equivalent of #28, and only 8 votes out of the top 25. ;D)

Maybe. But not necessarily if they were over ranked to begin with.
