29-20 Millikin leads at IWU late in the 4th per WJBC2.com.

What a horrendous season for Wesleyan.

Congrats to Augie and NCC on great seasons.

I hope you both have success in the playoffs!! I know you will be great representatives of the CCIW!

Reviewing the different predictions everyone made at the beginning, it seems we all under-estimated Augie (with the exceptions being the augie faithful).

Sterny,
I'll cop a plea on this one and admit I underestimated Augie as well. Their defense, my big concern in the pre-season and after the Central game, played great all conference season with the exception of the Elmhurst game. Congratulations to all the Vikings on their first undefeated conference season in 12 years.
Now let's make some noise in the playoffs (NCC too!)!

I love how the WETN announcers are talking about how it is tough for Augie to pick up the 1st down on a 3rd and 5. They talked about the limited offence because 3rd and 5 is "normally" a passing down. Heck, 3rd and 15 is a running down for Augie and if they don't make it, they get it darn close.

augievike93,

I could be mistaken, but I seem to recall Bob Reade running a sweep with Dennis Fraikes on 4th and 13 in a 1985 playoff win over Albion. Result: 1st down Augie.

That sounds about right for Bob.  You know part of their commentary talked about how difficult they perceive it is for Augie to come back from down 2 TDs late in a game.  They miss the point.  The Augie game plan doesn't allow for them to be down 2 TDs in a game.  That isn't an option because the gameplan assumes that it won't (and ususally doesn't) happen.

augievike93

Hey, I made second string!  Must have happened at 50.

augievike,

I love that perception of our offense too. I guess with the spread offense becoming popular alot of college students (which from the bit I heard of WETN game I think they were) don't understand hardnose football that involves hammering the ball and wasting the clock. I find it hard to have conversations with most football fans my age (21) because all they seem to care about is the flashy pass, they don't seem to care about that hard 3rd and 3 or 5 run, which IMO opinion is real football.

Way to go Augie on having a 7-0 mark in a more than competitive CCIW. Also with the NCC game over probably before it started good luck to the Cardinals also. Should once again be an exciting playoffs for the CCIW.

Go Thunder,

Thank you for the kind words about our school, players and fans. I know I felt that same mutual respect for you guys in last years playoffs.

However, I don't know if anyone saw it but before it gets on the board from the opponent I would like to say I was appalled by our touchdown run in the second quarter and the actions of our running back. It was unnecessary and in bad taste to pitch it to our O-lineman after he had broke free. I was happy however when Barnes called him out on it and did his best Lou Holtz bringing his player to the sideline by the facemask. On behalf of the augie fans on the board I would like to say to all Wheaton fans the actions on that play were uncalled for and really ticked me off as well.

To Wheaton,

Congrats on another winning season.

I agree with you, and you beat me to posting about that play so I won't say anything else.  For people listening on the radion, did they ever say who scored the TD to put Augie up 14-0 because the announcer at the stadium never said who scored, just that it was a 33 yard run.

Jim Matson

Augie really kicked out butts today.  Wheaton was never really in this game, for even when they had an opportunity, they gave it away on bad execution.  But as mentioned earlier, it was impressive to watch Augie really grind away at the Wheaton defense.  Even when the Thunder came up big on a stop, Augie just punted away and started over again a few minutes later.  Good discipline and consistency on their part.

Some highlights for Wheaton were J.R.'s last game, some good special teams tackling, some nice block by the lead back on the option and some great stops by the defensive line.  It was certainly not a well played game by Wheaton, but that was mostly Augie's fault.

I'll be following North Central and Augustana next week - hopefully some of it will be on the internet.  Good luck to the Vikes and the Cards as they represent our fine conference.

augiedogie,

The press release on the team page gave the touchdown to Zeifert as it was pitched before the endzone.

Mr. Ypsi

Re: the pitch to the O-Linesman - IF if was done to taunt, then shame!  But another possibility is that the rb sacrificed his stats to honor a blocker, letting him score probably the only TD of his career!

I have no clue which is the case, but just to suggest a more honorable possibility.

dansand

Looking at the box score, I was wondering what the deal was with Zeifert scoring a TD. I agree that it's not only uncalled for but also dangerous, considering the score was only 7-0 at the time midway through the second quarter. I'm sure Cozzi was just excited to get his All-American lineman a TD, but that's probably not the best judgement in that situation.

I know that the Thunder passing game was a little down this year, but what an impressive performance by Augie's defense, allowing six completions for 64 yards and picking off five Wheaton passes, three by Tom Anthony, who hopefully sewed up CCIW Defensive POY today. Kudos to the offense as well. Although their overall numbers weren't exceptional, their first drive set the tone: 15 plays, 82 yards, 7:55. Beautiful.
