Congrats to all that made the real team! It's not as much of an honor as making USee's team, but close!
You win! You always do!

This is my first post and i was just wondering if anyone knows how the POW are chosen because looking through all the statistics i am confused as to some of the picks for POW. For example, this weeks defensive player of the week had 13 tackles (only 4 of them solo) and earned the DPOW honors, and i noticed that a few other players in the conference had statistically better performances?

CCRM Player...or CCRM Fan,

Welcome to the board.

I don't know, I think 13 tackles (solo or not) is pretty good. Consider the best defensive players in the league are averaging about 9-10 tackles a game. If you are "Jonesing" (no pun intended) for your boy Brian Hipchen, who had 3 INT vs Elmhurst, I may actually agree with you as holding Elmhurst to 6 points was the surprise of the weekend (at least for me, even though its what Mr Ypsi predicted).

Player of the Week has always confused me a bit.  Not that those who win on a week to week basis aren't worthy, but often there is another choice that seems more obvious.  I'm pretty sure that the strength of the opponent makes a difference, along with whether or not your team wins (not many POW from teams that lost).

For instance there was a week that Jordan Roberts had 280 yards passing, 3 TD's, plus 115 yards rushing and 1 TD, yet he wasn't the offensive player of the week.

I'd need to go back to the CCIW site to see who won, but I recall it was someone who had a very, very solid game against one of the top teams.

I've gotten to the point that I focus solely recognizing those who won it and not who I think should have.  Everyone who wins it clearly had a significant impact on their team winning the game and thus is very deserving of the recognition.

there was also the week that JD East returned an interception for a touchdown and a fumble for a touchdown and did not win the defensive player of the week....that perhaps may have been the biggest laugher of a snub all season.
You win some, you lose some, and sometimes it rains.

I didnt see any glaring ommissions in the All-Conference team.  It would have been nice to see Tassio on the first team, but since there were only 2 backs, I think they got it right.   Sulo making second team can be looked at as a small disappointment, but the guys in front of him had some great stats.   I am very happy to have BOTH of those second teamers on NC's roster and hoping they will play like All-Americans as the playoffs approach.

QuoteNAPERVILLE, Ill. – Augustana's Robert Wood, along with North Central's Joey Michals and Shane Dierking were named the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Football Players of the Week Monday.

Wood, a senior running back from Loves Park, Ill., and Rockford Boylan High School, rushed for a career-high 181 yards on 30 carries during the Vikings' 20-17 win over Illinois Wesleyan in the season finale for both teams on Saturday. Wood recorded the highest rushing total by an Augustana running back since Mike Guzman gained 220 yards against Central of Iowa in the opening game of the 2005 season. The victory allowed the Vikings to finish the season 6-4 overall and 4-3 in the CCIW. It was the 31st winning season in the last 32 years for Augustana. Wood ended the year with 698 yards rushing on 154 attempts with seven touchdowns. He is a Pre-Medicine (Biology) major.

Michals, a sophomore linebacker from Frankfort, Ill., and Providence Catholic High School, tallied a career high 13 tackles, including four solo as the team's middle linebacker, during North Central's 61-7 victory over North Park on Saturday. The win clinched the Cardinals the outright CCIW title. Michals is an English-Literature major.

Dierking, a freshman return specialist from Wheaton, Ill., and Wheaton-Warrenville South High School, ran a punt back 78 yards for a touchdown just before halftime of the Cardinals' victory over North Park. The punt return was the second longest in school history. Dierking also returned the opening kickoff 50 yards to set up North Central's offense with a short field on its first possession. He is a Business major.

Thanks for the warm welcome USee. I agree 13 tackles is pretty good, I am in no way trying to take the fact that Mr. Michals had a statistically solid game but, as you have indicated (being that I'm a Carthage fan) I do feel that Mr. Hipchen got the short end of the stick here. Again as you pointed out he had 3 INT, but he also had 9 tackles (7 solo) (and i know, i know a tackle is a tackle whether it is solo or not) and a pass break up. Still leaves me curious who or what decides POW....?

I would also like to throw in a personal opinion here.....Tackles end plays, turnovers end drives.

Thanks for the input Mugsy, but if strength of opponent is a factor in this......didn't NCC play North Park this week? And they got two of the three POW honors?

Yes, you are correct.  I've been pulled all over with meetings at work so my posts have been thrown together quickly and aren't as clear as they should be.

Since I don't know with certainty, "I'm guessing" the relative strength of the opponent may make a difference.  Not always, but there have been several cases like the week of the J.D. East "snub" (as pointed out by thunder38illini) where he had a huge game against North Park.  Not sure why he didn' win that week.

Perhaps NCC taking 2 of 3 POW slots this past week was a function of wrapping up a perfect 10-0 season, therefore getting a bit of extra recognition.  I don't know.  Or perhaps it was to point out that my theory was a complete pile of nonsense?   :-\

Like I said I don't have a clear understanding of how this works, since sometimes it doesn't make sense.  That is why I've gotten to the point of focus on giving congrats to those who are recognized and not dwelling on those who don't.

Congrats to all that made the real team! It's not as much of an honor as making USee's team, but close!

"My Team" was merely a guess at what the coaches would decide. In the end I missed 4 picks but got the rest right. I was very surprised Jordan Tassio wasn't 1st team as the past several years they have had 3 rb's on the 1st team. The coaches picked Jon Janus over my pick of Derek Sulo, Willie Hayes over my pick of Max Brooks , Mark Constantine over Tommy Burgraaf, and Joe Antonnacci over Tyler Langs as RS.

My beefs would be I am not sure how you leave Max Brooks off the 1st team. he was one of the best Dlineman I saw this year. (but Willie Hayes was pretty good too!!). Lots of great players on the DL (unfortunately most of them play for NCC). I also was really impressed with Peter Bulandr for NCC and almost placed him on my 1st team as well. I don't know how you leave Tommy Burggraf off the 1st team. He gave up ZERO sacks or hurries to NCC's 24 sack trio of garza, hayes, clendenning. He was blocking Clendenning of the game (who recorded 1 tackle for the game). If he isn't a 1st team OT I don't know what one looks like. Antonnacci vs Langs on the RS is fine. Not many people punted to Tyler langs in conference but I didn't see Antonnacci except for 1 game.

Congrats to all. Very deserving group and an entertaining year in the CCIW.

Every week you could probably state your case for someone who didn't win. Congrats to all the 2010 players of the week, the All-Conference Selections and Good luck to NC and Wheaton in the play-offs.

North Central is moving to the WIAC so we can justify a #1 seed should we ever get another one :)

NCC will have every opportunity to justify their #1 seed on December 4th.  But maybe they are already looking ahead to their matchup with fellow #1 and well known football power Wesley.  ;)

For the Cardinals, there will be NO looking ahead, I can assure you that.   The only team on their mind is St. Norbert.    We as fans though get the opportunity to look ahead....if not, what the heck would we be able to talk about on the boards??   ;D
