'86 Augie game!!!!!!*@#$%**@#........where is my blood pressure medicine?? back to my anger managment class........

My 1st start ever as a way, way undersized sophomore LB replacing our team captain.  Big shoes to fill for sure...

So one going to start playing "Glory Days" by Springstein soon?

Ugh, don't want to think about our '86 game against Augie!!    :-[.   OUCH!

What? Not quite an 18-17 affair determined on the last play of the game?   ;D

For those CCIW history buffs, found this game summary on the Augie site of this remarkable game.

Quote
Augustana 18, Wheaton 17 on October 14 at Ericson
Field...

Matt Krull kicked a 20 yard field goal with just six seconds left on
the clock to give Augustana a hard fought 18-17 victory over Wheaton
before a Parent's Day crowd of 3,000. Krull's kick capped a 44 yard, 10
play drive that included two huge third down conversions by quarterback
Greg Wallace. To set the stage, go back to when Wheaton took over on
its own 10 with 6:05 left. The Crusaders led 17-13 at the time but three
plays resulted in a loss of three yards and on fourth and 13 from his own
seven, Wheaton head coach J.R. Bishop elected to take a safety.
Quarterback Ernie Frey retreated seven yards and knelt in the end zone.
That made it 17-15 Wheaton with 3:09 left in the game. On the ensuing
free kick Dennis Fraikes returned the ball 20 yards to the Crusader 48.
On third and five from the 43, Wallace kept the ball on an option and
gained eight yards to the 35. Three plays later the Vikings faced third
and seven from the 32 when Wallace evaded a fierce rush and hit a
sliding Eric Welgat for a 19 yard gain to the Wheaton 13. Four plays
after that the ball sat at the four and head coach Bob Reade called on
Krull to boot the game winner. Augustana took a 7-0 lead when Bob
Guerrieri scored on a 15 yard run with 9:22 left in the first quarter. That
score was set up when Kevin Cmiel intercepted Frey's pass at the 15 and
Guerrieri scored on the next play. The Crusaders got a 44 yard field goal
from Ron Rittgers with 3:24 left in the second quarter and then took the
lead on a 54 yard hook and ladder play with 2:10 before halftime. Frey
hit Rick Benware 24 yards down the field and he lateraled to Keenan
Cheung who went the rest of the way untouched to make it 10-7. Early
in the fourth quarter Vince Hellem banged in from one yard out but Krull's
kick was blocked and Augustana led 13-10. Carlton Beasley's fumble
recovery at the three set up that short drive. Wheaton took the lead
with 9:55 left when Frey's pass to his intended receiver was broken up
but Brad Anthony, who was not in the pattern but was trailing the play,
plucked the ball out of mid-air and romped in for a 77 yard touchdown
reception. That set up Krull's last second heroics. The Augustana
defense was tremendous all day, limiting Wheaton to -37 yards rushing
and 215 yards passing. Of those 215 passing yards, however, 131 came
on the two scoring plays. The Vikings gained 242 yards rushing with Price
leading the way with 89 yards on 27 attempts.

Scary good defenses back then for Augie.

random player,

It seems like a week or two of interviewing several candidates, including Cushman, would not have hurt anyone (players, recruits, etc)  and would have made it seem like some effort was put into the search.

Not too many players are going to be deciding on a school, especially as the CCIW or D3 football is concerned until early 2011...

Little need to fill the position that quickly.

Umm... you didn't.  98 yards (39 rushing, 59 passing).   :-\

Closest game Augie had in the playoffs was against Mount Union: 16-7.  Augie held Mount Union to 21 yards rushing and only 170 yards offense.  That hasn't happened too many times since, eh?   :o

All other playoff games were blowouts.

To understand the full dominance of that Augie defense, I'd encourage you to go to the Augie website and read up on the championship teams.  They held 1600 yard rushers to 40 yards on 18 carries.   :o

Shows how far the CCIW defenses need to get to truly contend for championships.  We'll see how far the NCC defense has come starting tomorrow, but there will be several steps in the ladder in the weeks to follow should they get there.

Not to toot our own horn too much, but Mt. Union was the number 1 offense in the country that season.  I think we had 3 or 4 INT's and 7 or 8 sacks.  We held Mt. Union to 15 yards of offense in the second half in their own stadium.  Very satisfying win.

QuoteAugustana 16, Mount Union 7 on November 29 in Alliance,
Ohio...

In what is certainly one of the best defensive team efforts in
Augustana history, the Vikings put a stranglehold on a Mount Union team
that was averaging 445.0 yards and 31.1 points per game. Instead, this
game belonged to the Augustana defense. With linemen Carlton Beasley,
Lynn Thomsen and Brian King each recording seven tackles, Mount Union
quarterback Scott Gindlesberger was under constant pressure. King,
Beasley and linebacker Mike Ricketts, who led all tacklers with eight, all
had two quarterback sacks. Mike Gray intercepted two passes and Kevin
Cmiel one. The secondary recorded a total of seven pass breakups and
Gindlesberger was limited to just 149 yards passing on 11 of 27. The
Purple Raiders only gained a net of 21 yards rushing for a total offense
of just 170 yards, way less than half their season average. In the
second half Mount Union ran just 24 plays for a total of 68 yards as
Augustana completely shut things down. The Purple Raiders took a 7-0
lead on a 15 yard pass from Gindlesberger to Bill Eyer early in the second
quarter. The Vikings tied the game on a one yard run by Brad Price with
just :33 left before halftime. In the second half Matt Krull, who had
missed two extra points a week earlier, kicked three field goals after
Augustana drives stalled inside the 20. Price gained 110 yards on 27
attempts and quarterback Greg Wallace completed seven of 12 passes
for 110 yards with five of those receptions going to Eric Welgat for 90
yards.

You're sure right about that.  I guess that's the only good thing about the past decade or so; there is a little excitement before the disappointment sets in for Augie fans.

Random Player:

A few comments, if I may.  First, while I and others here appreciate your passion for your school and as a player, I'm assuming since you are posting here that you are a senior player whose career is now finished, although some of your posted comments might seem to indicate otherwise.  If you are still an active player with eligibility left, while there is no specific rule that you can't participate on these boards, it has pretty much been the policy in 10+ years here that active players should not be posting/participants here for obvious reasons, including in the off-season.  Most coaches at the DIII schools that many of us know have rules against this.  So while we welcome newcomers here, if you are still an active player, I would suggest perhaps you consider waiting until your career is over.

That being said, I also agree with and have to join in with Augie6 and Viking Mike in questioning some of what you shared with everyone publically here about the process.  As Viking Mike mentioned, I'm not sure I follow you in that regard.  If the players were allowed an active part in choosing the next coach by your AD and the administration, I am very surprised.  Of course, the opinion of the players should be noted, however, I am not sure their vote should be the deciding factor - I can assure you that would not happen at most schools.  So the question was well-phrased by our colleagues here Augie6 and Viking Mike - are you saying that the survery was given before or after the coaching change decision was made - which is it?  Your desire to share with readers here some of the reasoning for the change and how the process took place was done with good intentions I'm sure, however, in doing so and how it now has raised questions about the policies and "behind the scenes" actions of your AD and administration is just one of the reasons why it is discouraged that active/current players participate in this board :-X.  As the other two mentioned, if how the process occurred is how you seem to suggest, for sure there will be some serious concerns by many of your alumni players (and even alumni in general) about the policies by the current administration.

No disrespect intended toward you  and certainly none toward new Head Coach Cushman either as I wish him the best as I've already stated in my earlier post.  Nonetheless, I'm just mentioning some friendly advice to you here.  I hope you have an enjoyable remainder of the Thanksgiving weekend.

Reviewing the season stats for Augie in 86'.

Mike Gray had 15, count'em, 15 INT's for the season.  That is more than most D3 teams for a season!  Augie had 42 INT's as a team.  (I thought Wheaton had a good year this year with INT's at 23).  Add to that 21 fumbles and you have an incredible 63 takeaways in 13 games.  Astounding.

Opponents gouged the Augie defense for a whopping 0.8 yards per carry and 2 TD's for the season.

Enough Augie love for now.  I'm sick to my stomach.

Go get'em tomorrow NCC and Wheaton!

Every year the seniors are asked to give a survey about the experience with the football program. I cannot say for sure, but I am 99 percent positive it did not go down as that post would make it seem. Randomplayer I am sure I know you, but like others have suggested worry about playing, not posting while you still have elgibility. Posting will be here forever, playing is a different story. Augie alums on here, I can see that you want more information, message me and I may oblige to help qualm the situation on these boards haha.
