I think the common opponent is a decent indicator. What it means to me is NCC has a defense that is comparable and their offense, at least back then, was still evolving. That's basically what I have said on here already.

Okay, so what do you all really think NCC's chances are against UWW next week?

We're all hoping that UWW guys will autograph some of our footballs after the game.  Think how exciting it will be to play the 2011 season using footballs autographed by UWW players!  We'll be the envy of the entire CCIW.

It would be a bit unconventional, but at least it would allow you to walk away with something.

Mr. Flynn

NCC destroyed a team that beat Franklin earlier in the year, would that mean that NCC would beat Franklin without the problems that Whitewater had?  I'm thinking common opponent means nothing, especially at this point in the year.

ncc58

Oh, heck. We'll be hearing that all week. And, UWW could have scored more against UW-EC with their 2nd team offense against the UW-EC first team defense. So the head to head differential could have been greater.

UW-EC beat UW-SP the week after losing to NCC. UW-SP was the 2nd place team in the WIAC. I don't know what that means.

Carthage beat Franklin. NCC beat Carthage easily. UWW beat Franklin easily in the 2nd half. I don't know if that tells us anything either.

Good thing we get to see the game next Saturday. Coppage vs. Wenger should be fun to watch, as well as the other 20 players on the field.

While UWW doesn't seem to be burying teams as it had in the past, there's a common opponent: UW-EC.

NCC beat them 20-6 at home, UWW won 45-0 on the road.

How much it will mean come next Saturday is anyone's guess, of course.

Why would NCC players want autographs from a team they just beat? ;D

Mugsy,

What happened to Wheaton today? Good win by NCC, on to the next higher ranked opponent that Wheaton didn't have to play!!!
The tone of your post I'm choosing to ignore based on my respect for virtually ever other NCC poster on this board.

Mugsy - thank you, but I'd be remiss if I didn't say something myself.
NCC Tailgater - no need to act like a douche and make the college seem classless. If you had any concept of D3 football whatsoever, you'd have wanted Wheaton to do well because 1. They are also representing the CCIW, which, I assume, you wouldn't mind getting some national acclaim with 2 teams making it as deep as possible in the playoffs and 2. They aren't even on our side of the bracket. Grow up.

Plus K for the use of the word douche on this board ;D

I love the common opponents game.  So, if you will oblige...
Trine defeated UWRF 34-14 (-20)
UWW defeated UWRF 63-14 (+49)
This indicates that UWW should have defeated Trine by 4 touchdowns (+29)

Trine defeated Adrian 24-16 (-8)
UWW defeated Adrian 35-0 (+35)
This also indicates that UWW should have defeated Trine by 4 touchdowns (+27)

Actual result UWW defeated Trine 45-31 (+14) (UWW underperformed expectations by 14 pts.)

AND (my favorite :D)

Carthage defeated Franklin 30-27 (-3)
NCC defeated Carthage 43-8 (-35) (This means that NCC would have defeated FC by 38 pts.!!)
NCC defeated EW-Eau Claire 20-6 (+14)
UWW defeated UW-Eau Claire 45-0 (+45)
This indicates that UWW should have defeated Franklin by 10 touchdowns (+69)

Actual result UWW defeated FC 52-21 (+31) (UWW underperformed expectations by 38 pts.)

So, will NCC defeat UWW by 7 based on this new common opponents information?

Pat Coleman

Probably depends a lot on which quarterback starts for UW-Whitewater.

Why stop there if you're using uncommon opponents :o:

Div III   N Central IL    beat    WI Eau Claire   20 - 6
Div III   WI Eau Claire   beat    WI Oshkosh   20 - 14
Div III   WI Oshkosh   beat    Lambuth   35 - 22

   Div I-FCS   Georgia St   beat    Lamar   23 - 17

   Div I - FCS   South Dakota   beat    Minnesota   41 - 38
   Div I - FBS   Minnesota   beat    Illinois   38 - 34

   Div I - FBS   Wisconsin   beat    Ohio St   31 - 18

Stagg Again!!

Some more common opponents information ...
ONU defeated UWRF 35-21 (+14)
UWRF defeated UWEC 45-42 (+3)
NCC defeated UWEC 20-6 (-14)
So, ONU should have been favored by 3 pts. today in Naperville?

Take away the 47 yards that ONU gained on the last three plays of the game and the touchdown on the last play of the game (when NCC's FR/SO defensive players were on the field), and ONU would have ended up with 173 yds. of total offense and 3 pts.

Stagg Again!!

This is what I would expect using the the Colley Matrix Ratings.  ;D

Ha!! Post of the year candidate...so if Mt. Union beats either NCC or UWW, they would be the best team in the state of Ohio...maybe even the Midwest?!? DIII is really impressive this year  ;D

FWIW, common opponents is only useful to a certain degree. Both teams won by a good margin. It would mean more if either NCC or UWW had lost to UWEC. Time of year matters, NCC and UWW have both certainly evolved and improved as teams since their UWEC games. Styles and team strengths/weaknesses all matter as well.

We'll see on Saturday. But given the way NCC's D is playing right now, you've got to at least give them a chance to be in this game in the 4th Q.

It's actually "My Team Is Better Than Your Team" but the sub-title says it all:

"Taking Illogical Arguments to Absurd Extremes Since 2008" ...

But I think the true common opponent (only UWEC) has some value.

But as PC points out the UWW QB issue is also a factor. So far UWW has gotten by and if the starter is out again next week, I expect two factors to help mitigate the damage: 1) is very well coached and they'll have the offense tuned so the reserve can be comfortable, and 2) it's a pretty deep program so UWW is better off than many schools.
