Someone asked for the opinion of a UWW fan that saw both teams.
Here you go:  NCC is way over-rated.
Kidding.  In my opinion as well as others I talked with that saw both games, no question:
1.  NCC is no worse than # 3 (I'm hoping for #2) best team in country.
2.  Wegner All day. No other defensive player had such an impact on the UWW offense as he did. Easy choice for DPOY.
3. NCC should have been 1 seed in North and would have played Mt yesterday for a trip to Stagg. Committee's silliness hurt you too- maybe worse than UWW.
4.  UWW defense has got to be most under-rated team there is.

I don't know who you put ahead of them based on this play-off season unless NCC graduates a lot of starters and Wesley does not. But I have to toot my own horn here as I had NCC at #3 in the D-3 Fan Poll from October 31st on............ ;) Never had Welsey higher than 5th.

Huh?  Under-rated by who?
I find easily offended people rather offensive!

Statistics are like bikinis; what they reveal is interesting, what they hide is essential.

HS Coach, I'll give you a pass, your point spreads and picks show you understand the vastly different offensive styles UWW had to play against this playoff season.

Many posters, however, showed significant doubt and pointed to the UWW defense giving up so many points to the "lowly" Franklin and Trine teams.

I've said it before and I'll say it with even more conviction now, there wasn't/isn't a team in the playoffs this year that had to play against the challenging offensive style AND player skill that UWW faced these last four games.  I am not saying that Franklin and Trine necessarily beat Wesley or Mt, but I absolutely believe they would have put up more points than their playoff opponents did.

As for NCC, unlike Bethel,  I believe their defense would have been good enough to keep them in a game until the end with Mt, and their D would have had the same dominance against Wesley as UWW did.

Championship week. None of us are involved but many of us have seen these two teams at least once before!

My take on the Stagg is that UWW does not have the speed at the skill positions that Mt Union has and I don't think UMU has the combo strength/speed up front (especially the UWW defense) that UWW has. Mt Union's receivers are fast and skilled. Their RB's are not very fast but their OLine is solid. UWW is almost the mirror opposite. speed at RB and great skill but not so fast at WR. So what wins? If UMU has enough strength combined with speed on Defense to limit the UWW running game and UMU can complete a high percentage of passes to their skill guys, I don't see UWW winning. Likewise, If UWW can run the ball and control the LOS, UMU won't have time to get it to those skill guys.

Should be a great game to watch for D3 fans

Hoping for a UWW victory, by at lest 10 pts. Had NC been in the St. Thomas bracket, there is no doubt in my mind they'd be playing for a National Championship this week-end. Also, being ranked #3 in the final poll means nothing-if you don't end up #1 it doesn't matter. Ask the players or coaches how "great" it would be to end up 3rd-they want it all. Here's to a better ending to 2011-Go Cards :D

No doubt in your mind? You have "NO DOUBT" NCC would have gone to Mt Union and won? You may be the only one in that camp. I think NCC can compete w UWW and UMU but remember you lost by 10 at home to UWW. Playing in Alliance for the first time ever against a team that may be every bit as good (perhaps better) than UWW definitely gives me some "doubt".

But what do I know.

Way more than everyone else, but I still think they would have beat Mt. Union.

An offense playing, "mistake free," football is pretty hard to do against us.  Our defense isn't too shabby either.   ;)
No doubt and it was proven again against Wesley.  Without question UWW's complete defense was the best NCC faced all year.  Wheaton's rush defense was good and ONU had a good pass defense, but neither squad had the total talent level that UWW possessed.  Additionally, UWW's size and quickness at the line of scrimmage (on both sides of the ball) is something that most teams do not possess.  I will be eager to watch the "hogs" do battle on Saturday.

Is it too early to discuss next fall's out-of-conference schedules for the CCIW schools?

Newcard-You might want to compare box scores between the Mount Union-Ohio Northern game and the North Central - Ohio Northern games. Mount Union totally dominated Ohio Northern, something like 180 total yards.

I realize it's the only comparison until this weekend, but it's a dramatic one.

Leaves plenty of doubt in my mind
Same as it ever was...same as it ever was...same as it ever was...

Seventies,

In comparing the box scores I would say the relative dominance is pretty equal. Dramatic? not sure what you think is dramatic but UMU won 27-0 and NCC won 28-9. ONU scored their only TD on the last play of the game and their 220 yds of total offense (58 of which was in the last 1.08 while the backups for NCC played) is not a dramatic difference from 183 total yards. In fact, if you actually look at the average yds pere play (which in my view is a much better indicator of apples/apples comparison) ONU averaged 3.8 yds per rush and 3.7 yds per play against UMU and only 3.3 yds per rush and 3.3 yds per play. Offensively, UMU averaged 3.9 yds per rush and 5.3 yds per play while amassing 202 rush yds and 249 pass yds while NCC averaged 6.1 yds per rush and 6.0 yds per play getting 285 rushing yds and 40 pass yds (they threw it 7x).

So what, exactly, is so dramatic about any difference?

I think NCC/UMU would be a great battle and not dissimilar to the UWW/NCC game. While I don't think NCC would win "without a doubt" I also don't think the UMU/NCC difference is anywhere near "dramatic"
