Looks like a nice start for the Titans.

Stagg Again!!

Wow, what a game in Redlands going on right now.  This crew of officials is hands down the WORST I have ever seen.  I will be intrigued to see the penalty yardage comparison.  Every time NCC stops Redlands a "mystery" flag is thrown.  It is hard to play against two teams on the same field. The SCIAC should look at the tape on this game!  I certainly have gained a new sense of appreciation for our CCIW officials.

ANOTHER &%@* "MYSTERY" FLAG!!!!!  WOW. I've got to see this on tape.  This is absolutely amazing!!

Redland's storms back for 35-29 win over NCC.  Redland's outscores NCC 28-10 in 2nd half.  6 defensive penalties by NCC keeps Redland's drives alive.  Instead of 3 and out, Redlands drives for TD.

As good as NCC looked in 1st half, Redlands controls 2nd.

270 yards by Redlands in 2nd half.

Sure, some of the calls seem questionable.  But NCC should have made some plays.  Really poor tackling by NCC in 2nd half, especially on last TD.

10 penalties for 100 yards by NCC, 6 against the defense.

Redlands 0 for 3 in 1st half on 3rd down.  5-7 in 2nd half.

A final from Redlands:

NCC 29, Redlands 21, Officials 14

(my estimate, but I'll have to watch the game again.  Wow!

The flags are obviously debatable. To my eyes it looked like your secondary was having a tough time keeping up with Irwin and Richardson. On three of the pass interference calls multiple flags were flying in the air meaning more than one ref saw the same thing.

Either way it was a great game and hard fought by both teams. It sucks that someone has to go home a loser after tonights effort. NCC is a great team and I was very impressed. We do not see that kind of size here on the West Coast. Good luck the rest of the way and safe travels back to Illinois to those that traveled out to Southern California.

A few thoughts from tonight's game:

Thought number one: I just spoke with a person at the NCC vs. Referees, I mean, Redlands game. Apparently we got homered even worse than the radio made it sound. Three pass interference calls on CRUCIAL third down situations, tight ends/receivers getting helmet to helmet contact (being hit so hard their helmet flies about 15-20 feet), and phantom flags all had a massive outcome on the game. I will not blame the refs 100% for the loss, bit that is hard to play against.

Thought two: NCC's defense still seems pretty stout without Schneiderbauer, Wenger, or Sulo. Though, it's obvious that they are not out there. Redlands went 5/7 on third downs in the 2nd half, and Audrey (Aubree? Our radio announcers sucked... That will be addressed soon) couldn't be stopped. What happened to the don't bend, don't break defense that NCC had last year? The DC needs to stick with what worked and not OVER analyze.

Third thought: injuries. If I remember correctly, a few of the knocks on Wienke were that "his weight program promoted injuries". After this game, it seems lime injuries are a part of football and we need to deal with adversity.

Fourth and FINAL thought: FM89 radio announcers were awful. They were more interested in telling us where kids were from than telling us what was happening during the game. They seemed clueless with what they were saying "that brings up first and ten...... Check that it's 3rd and 6 for the Cardinals"! And what happened go learning the pronunciation of your own players' names? "Krakel in the shotgun... He's from Oswego East and the receiver is brought down at the 46 yardline after a SPECTACULAR 47 yard reception"... Well that's great that he's from Oswego, but what the hell just happened?!

Overall, I'd say tonight just didn't go well at all on any level for the Cards. Offensively, we need our young guys to step up. We have veteran players waiting in the wings, and they're able to play ANY position. Defensivley, limit penalties (no matter how difficult... Even if the refs DO indeed suck rectum) and make sure we key on their best player.
"We're looking at a minimum 8-peat!"

Is anyone else counting the hours to kickoff?  The 10:05 start on the east coast for the NCC vs Redlands game will seem a bit strange, but somehow the Cardinal fans will find a way to stay awake.

With that said, this game scares me to death.  NCC has had some rough openers, Ohio Northern two years ago, Concordia (Wisconsin) a few years back, and Illinois Benedictine in '84 come to mind.  Ok---forget the last one, but you get my point.

Like I said...............

Thanks RFB,

I didn't make the trip but watched on the video while receiving texts from two of my friends who traveled from the Chicago area.  I predict a real strong season for Redlands, with a playoff game in your future.  Perhaps, we could even meet in the playoffs.  Otherwise, we look forward to seeing you in Naperville next year.

If your schools can deal with the cost of this game, it would be a real nice cross country rivalry.

Come on man!!  The announcers are students ---kids.  Was the coverage great?  No.  But, perhaps they will improve, just like the team.  To say that they were "awful" and "clueless" is really harsh.  I know that it was a tough night (I even spilled a malt beverage on my quarterback club shirt--so what else could go wrong?).

However, let's all just take a deep breath and wait to see how much better it gets week by week.

Son of Tailgater

Carthage wins the opener but looking at the box score and not seeing the game I have a hard time figuring out how they won. It wasn't on offense though. It looks like the offense struggled for the entire game....Kudos to Carleton's defense but it looks like Carthage won once again on special teams and defense. Check this out:

Carthage Offense:
3-15 passing 39 yards; 1 TD using 3 different QB's
38 rushing attempts for 172 yards at a 4.5 average
3 for 13 on 3rd down - 23% conversion rate
Time of possession: 18:28
Chris Schultz punting? Didn't know he had that skill but the guy can do everything.

There was definitely a QB issues as two were replaced before settling on Djurickovic to finish the game. Coach Rucks said it best with this one "We won a football game." No excuses but it looks like we have a lot to figure out before hosting Lakeland next week. Bottom line this is a typical Carthage team....find a way to win even if it is ugly. There is a lot to be said for that and that will make Carthage dangerous any given week once we get to the conference schedule.

Next week: Lakeland is always one of those team that regardless of the year the game is always close. Within 5 points or so and it will be some hard nose football. Carroll shut them out this week and with both offenses struggling the game will be a low scoring one. 14-10 Carthage would be my early prediction.

Glad we were able to sneak out with the win but we need a good week of practice to get all three aspects of the team on the same page for the home opener.
