A few thoughts from tonight's game:

.

Fourth and FINAL thought: FM89 radio announcers were awful. They were more interested in telling us where kids were from than telling us what was happening during the game. They seemed clueless with what they were saying "that brings up first and ten...... Check that it's 3rd and 6 for the Cardinals"! And what happened go learning the pronunciation of your own players' names? "Krakel in the shotgun... He's from Oswego East and the receiver is brought down at the 46 yardline after a SPECTACULAR 47 yard reception"... Well that's great that he's from Oswego, but what the hell just happened?!

.

Come on man!!  The announcers are students ---kids.  Was the coverage great?  No.  But, perhaps they will improve, just like the team.  To say that they were "awful" and "clueless" is really harsh.  I know that it was a tough night (I even spilled a malt beverage on my quarterback club shirt--so what else could go wrong?).

However, let's all just take a deep breath and wait to see how much better it gets week by week.

Kovo- you are correct, I should have waited until the disappointment of the game wore off. However, I have some game calling experience myself. These kids had called games before, albeit they were high school and not as fast as NCC games.  You are correct, though. They will definitely get better over time. I just think that WONC should have picked two broadcasters with more experience calling NCC games to call the season opener. That being said, there were a few times where they sounded like a pretty ok broadcasting team.
"We're looking at a minimum 8-peat!"

Kovo,

I happen to know CI. He is a recent grad AND a former member of WONC. His broadcasts were very very good. He holds WONC to the incredibly high standard it has earned with all of the Marconis, Silver Domes, and broadcasters who have gone on to do great things. The fact that they are students is no excuse for a sloppy broadcast.

New,

I appreciate the frustration, and the expectation of excellence from WONC, but I hesitate in public criticism of students.

I'm sure the broadcasts will get better.  I'm not ripping CI, but just saying that we need to take a deep breath, and let things play out.

Pat Coleman

The thing about student radio is that experience graduates. You may not be able to find two kids with more experience, and it's week 1 for everyone.

Neverwas

Saw the WC scrimmage yesterday and was pretty impressed with the Thunder.  It took them a bit to settle down but they really took it to Wabash.  This is usually a very tight scrimmage between two solid teams but yesterday was pretty one sided.  It was 27-3 at the half.  The kicker hit a 52yd fg in the third qtr with plenty extra in the kick.

Wheaton did struggle a bit when they tried running the ball, were more effective passing.  The #1 RB for Wheaton did not play, that may have been part of the problem.

The biggest encouragement from yesterday's scrimmage, besides a healthy day, was #4.  The freshman WR, Hiben.  He is the real deal.  Not sure if he started, Wheaton has 2 solid senior WRs but any 3 WR sets he was out there.  He had a few nice grabs.  Wheaton did a good job isolating him.  He is big, fast and actually pretty physical.  He will definitely be a contributor this year.

you fellas want to hear a bad broadcast, check out the NPU Vikings men's bball games...talk about laborous and boring...yikes.

I've never met a first team all conference student broadcaster. Consider getting something is better than nothing as they are students and this is a learning experience. IMO it is better than clicking refresh on a box score  ;D

Carthage wins the opener but looking at the box score and not seeing the game I have a hard time figuring out how they won. It wasn't on offense though. It looks like the offense struggled for the entire game....Kudos to Carleton's defense but it looks like Carthage won once again on special teams and defense. Check this out:

Carthage Offense:
3-15 passing 39 yards; 1 TD using 3 different QB's
38 rushing attempts for 172 yards at a 4.5 average
3 for 13 on 3rd down - 23% conversion rate
Time of possession: 18:28
Chris Schultz punting? Didn't know he had that skill but the guy can do everything.

There was definitely a QB issues as two were replaced before settling on Djurickovic to finish the game. Coach Rucks said it best with this one "We won a football game." No excuses but it looks like we have a lot to figure out before hosting Lakeland next week. Bottom line this is a typical Carthage team....find a way to win even if it is ugly. There is a lot to be said for that and that will make Carthage dangerous any given week once we get to the conference schedule.

Next week: Lakeland is always one of those team that regardless of the year the game is always close. Within 5 points or so and it will be some hard nose football. Carroll shut them out this week and with both offenses struggling the game will be a low scoring one. 14-10 Carthage would be my early prediction.

Glad we were able to sneak out with the win but we need a good week of practice to get all three aspects of the team on the same page for the home opener.

SOT,
I was at the the Carthage game and the first half offense was non existent in the first half.  Six possessions in the first half with no first downs.  The defense keep them in the game.  Second half with Djurickovic at QB, the O showed life and the Red Men got out of Minnesota with a win.

They say the biggest improvement is from game 1 to game 2, so hopefully the offense will be more productive this week against Lakeland.  The seems very solid so if the offense get step up, Carthage should be Lakeland.  I expect, like you, a low scoring game.  21-10 Carthage.

HRM,

Thanks for confirming that information. Do you know if Djurickovic will be starting now? What was wrong with the offense? Oline, skilled players, chemistry, play calling?

I would guess that Djurckovic is now number 1, but you never know.  When he took over in the second half there was a spark with the O that they did not have in half one.  Carthage was switching QB's in the first half and went with Djurckovic almost exclusively in the second half.

And now that I am back after a long holiday weekend which I hope everyone enjoyed now that football is back in action...here are my thoughts from the past 4 days.

TCU - Baylor was one of the best games I have seen in a long time. It was exciting from start to finish and as an offensive player, I love 98 points in one game.

Maryland's uniforms are hideous.

Now onto IWU...

The turf field was awesome. It will probably hold up better in the months of October and November (hopefully December) and the dustbowl days at Wilder Field are over.

I also liked the rule that at 7:30 of each quarter, the game was stopped as an official's timeout for several minutes in order to get water to the players and refs on the field.

As for the game, I was thoroughly impressed with the size and speed and ability and all around game of the IWU defense. They flew around everywhere and they hit hard. They have sideline to sideline speed and experience everywhere. They made it a long day for the Hope qb as well as for the running backs. I looked at the stats and was dumbfounded how Gresko only had 5 tackles. He was everywhere in the backfield.

The offense struggled at first and then got better as the game went on. TJ Stinde is a horse. He consistently broke tackles and kept runs going. As Titan Q said a few pages back, the offense will have to keep improving week by week since they are young at the qb position. IWU also boasts arguably the best group of wide outs in the CCIW. They put together quite a game, led by Tate Musselman's big day. Musselman might be the first IWU receiver who out ran a defense on a long catch and run in about 20 years. Gallik will definitely benefit from that experienced playmaking group. If the offensive line is able to give Gallik some more time and keep opening holes, it will work out well for the Titans.

I also have to give a shout out to the Titan special teams. The kicking game was excellent. And Bret Swango was everywhere. He was credited with 1 blocked punt, but I believe he tipped 2 or 3 more.

The Titans left the field Saturday with a lot to be excited about. I am looking forward to seeing them play against a spread offense this week up in Alma. Hopefully, they can replicate the game up there a couple years ago.

North Park defeated Aurora in a convincing game at Vago Field.  Greg and I are in the process of instituting a "live" broadcast.  We taped the broadcast of the NPU/AU game.

NPU's offense looked very good.  Krebs executed the offense really well and is a tough man to bring down.  Defense is going to be the big ? for the Vikes.  This group is going to be called upon to come up with the big stops in a close, 4th quarter.  Here's hoping the Vikings can pick up their first CCIW W in a long time.

Yes, Maryland's uniforms and helmet made me want to ____.  Ugh!  I know Under Armor is to blame for that debacle.

Was North Central playing in Bloomington or California?

I was unable to attend the Bluejay home opener and have a wedding next week and will miss that one as well. From what I hear from people who attended is that early there were two big plays that allowed for them to fall behind early. Once a couple of the young guys understood the adjustments it was pretty one sided and the second half was a beat down by the jays. The offense put up some pretty impressive numbers which is what you would expect with 10 starters back. The key for the Jays will be how much the defense can grow and improve each week. As you all know the team that holds up the trophy is always so much better week 10 from week 1.

NC losing was a surprise to me as well as the offensive struggles from Carthage. Usually Carthage has really good athletes which especially in non conference games equates to some points.

With NC and Augie losing, Wheaton's injury problems, it is going to be a crazy conference this year. Maybe it lays open the possibility of a different conference champion then we have had in the past 25 years or so.....hmmm wonder where I am headed with this?
