I listened to Pat and Keith's podcast, and they mentioned that NCC dropped Coe as their first-week's game and decided to travel to Redlands instead.

Any insight on why NCC did that?

I was wondering this as well. Obviously in hindsight it looks like they should have kept Coe!

For a program thinking about competing for a national championship, it provided some exposure to West Coast teams. They already know how they compare to Wisconsin and Iowa teams.

Coe offered a one-off contest, while Redlands was willing to sign on to games in both 2011 and 2012.  Given that NCC is now having a lot of trouble finding non-conference opponents (note the NAIA foe in week 2 of this year), the chance to fill a 2012 non-conference slot was too attractive to pass up.

That makes sense. Thank you for the information, ncc_fan.

Unfortunate loss for NCC, but not the end of the world. Redlands is a good squad.

Just puts that much more importance on winning the CCIW again. Sounds to me like they will need to tighten up their defense (mainly their tackling). Other than that it sounds like they played pretty well, just couldn't pull it off.

3 drives ended in FGs. One missed extra point, one missed FG. The offense left a lot of points on the field.

While disappointing, you can't score on 100% if your drives. A team of NCC's caliber shouldn't lose a game in which they score 29 points.

Good summary of Wheaton/Wabash scrimmage over on NCAC board.

Sounds like it was a good showing for Wheaton.  Couple of notes:

1. Sounds like we have a case where a freshman will potentially make an impact for Wheaton.  I knew he was good and Wheaton was very high on him, yet I was skeptical that he would play much since Wheaton had a decent core of WR's returning.  However I owe GoThunder an apology.  Sounds like Mark Hiben does seem to be making noise - 6'4" 197lbs freshman WR from Glenbard West.  Will be interesting to see how this plays out...

2. The summary highlighted a big freshman running back that looked good, only I'm not aware of a "big" freshman running back.  There are some good sized sophomore RB's...

3. Hopefully a stronger WR corp than expected will relieve some pressure on the backup QB's.

I wouldn't overlook the challenge of playing at Redlands.

Redlands is ranked #22 in the Sporting News pre-season poll, #18 in the Lindy's poll, and appears in the "Others Receiving Votes" section of the D3Football poll.

North Central's game at Redlands certainly won't be a picnic in the park. Especially after a 1700 mile flight (Midway to Ontario, CA).

As robertgoulet advises its difficult to score on 100% of your drives. However, in this particular game, Redlands entered the red zone 5 times and came away with a touchdown ALL 5 TIMES. I'll bet any Cardinal coach or player will tell you this is totally unacceptable. Another unacceptable situation is NCC's 10 penalties for 100 yards---the equivalent of an entire football field. These are not the marks of a championship team, and are definitely 2 areas the Cards must improve on.

While I'm sure no member of the NCC traveling party would use it as an excuse, I'd be curious to learn what effect, if any, they felt a trip of 1700 miles and all the preparation involved therein, had on their performance. I would guess a trip of this distance is highly unusual for a football team at the D3 level.

Pat Coleman

There are usually several similar trips a year, however. Texas to Wisconsin, Oregon to Texas, Texas to Oregon, etc.

My son said the trip did not bother him-the loss however, did. And, you're right-they should not have allowed all of those red zone touchdowns. Some of the penalties were questionable, but again not acceptable.

At the end of the day we simply needed to make a play or two more.  A stop in the red zone, another touchdown, a big special teams play,  or force a turnover.  But, that is how it goes sometime.  However, I can't wait until Saturday.  Bethel should be another good test, and a chance to bounce back.

Also, thanks for sending your son to NC.  I hope that he is having a great college experience, a part of which is the first rate competition that he gets to experience by playing the other CCIW teams.

He loves NC and can't wait until Saturday. Since we were unable to make the trip to California, I  am looking forward to seeing how the team rebounds this week as well.

Saturday has the feel of a fairly handy win, to me. With Bethel's come from behind vs.  Eau Claire on Saturday, I think we may see an angry, emotionally ready team (NCC) versus a team on a bit of an emotional letdown after a big win (BU).

Hoping to be there to see it. And hoping my prediction holds true!

Anybody have a feel for what the loss of Wenger has meant to NCC's defense?  That dude was a beast.
