I would be surprised if NCC does much blitzing. I think they are a base cover 2 team and try to limit the big play, keep everything in front of them and use their speed and athleticism to close quickly and make plays. Their secondary runs very well and they like to gang tackle. They also substitute players liberally to stay fresh. They count on offenses that wont' hold up over a 12-15 play drive against their defense.

You are right, you will not see much blitzing, but who knows what will happen this week. Why is it only Wednesday?

One day closer.

Here is the usual Pantagraph article for the IWU game.

http://www.pantagraph.com/sports/college/football/article_12ec3e1c-faba-11e0-8fcb-001cc4c03286.html

The article points out right away that IWU lost to Millikin 19-13 on homecoming. They also lost to Carthage when I was playing in 2006 in a really bad way:

October 7 2006
The Illinois Wesleyan football team led by a 28-9 margin with 9:43 to play but Carthage stormed back to score 22 points in a six-minute span to claim a 31-28 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin win in Bloomington on Sat., Oct. 7.

Tailgater will tell you that it was the greatest comeback that he has ever seen live.

This would not be a good strategy for NC to employ this year. :D

Good news, everyone (except for the Weenies):

Just spoke with my friend Marty; he said he checked one of his sports almanacs and it says:

NCC - 27
IWU - 13
You win! You always do!

Mr. Ypsi

Most likely top 25 team to be upset: (Pat Coleman) NCC. ;D

Of course, I'd feel even better if he was right more often on those picks! :D

Would you really be so mean as to 'rain' on our Homecoming?! ;)  (In 2009, we beat both you and Wheaton, and lowly Millikin 'rained' on Homecoming! >:()

i was there in 09 (not a good day-especially the walk back to the car).it's not that we want to 'rain' on your homecoming as much as staying alive for a play-off spot. if u lose you still go, we go home and get ready for next year.

Easy on the lowly, we prefer to think of it as a lack of consistency ;D. I could add more but i need to exercise some deference to another IWU poster. Also, to Gator, i don't know of anyone who looks at the dicken that played at Millikin as an  all star.

Titan Q

North Central 24
Illinois Wesleyan 0

Well, not too much to analyze in this one.  Just a few observations...

1) North Central is a lot better football team than IWU (bigger/faster/stronger at most positions),

2) IWU made a number of costly mistakes in the 1st half that prevented them from hanging around early (it easily could have only been 7-0 at the half, instead of 17-0),

3) North Central's special teams play was big in the 1st half - 2 punts inside the 5 and a fairly long FG late, and

4) With T.J. Stinde, IWU has a very dangerous weapon to run the ball...without him, they have almost zero running game.  Sounds like Stinde might officially be done for the year, and might even need surgery.

Watching North Central play, it's very evident how much their program has separated from the rest of the CCIW.  I think they have 7-8 scholarship school transfers on the roster (several from D1) to complement their homegrown guys, who are outstanding D3 players.  In my opinion, North Central is not quite at UW-Whitewater/Mount Union level, but I think they are closer to those schools than they are the "next tier" of the CCIW (Wheaton, IWU this year).  John Thorne has really built a powerhouse program in Naperville.  This will be 6 CCIW titles in a row...that's hard to do.

The Titans need to shake this one off and get back to work next weekend.  With wins @ Millikin, @ Carthage, and vs Augustana, IWU is almost a lock for the NCAA tournament.  It'd be great to see the Titans in the field.

I'll certainly be rooting for Wheaton to knock off NCC, but I'd be absolutely shocked if that happens.
