Great article on the front page on th gam this week. Also comments from Wheaton Head Coach Mike Swider.

Scout's take

Wheaton head coach Mike Swider knows good defenses.

He sent two defensive players to the NFL, plays North Central annually and has regular preseason scrimmages against Wabash. Because the Thunder have lost to Mt. Union six times in the playoffs, it's high praise for Swider to suggest North Central's defense is nearing the Purple Power:

"They've got depth and they've got speed. Every single kid on the team can run. ... Here's the biggest thing that you've got to do. You cannot get penalized, because once you get in long yardage, it's over. So you've got to be good on first down, and that's the critical, critical down. Once they get you in any bad situation, they just overwhelm you. ... Those three defensive linemen — (Valente) Garza, (Willie) Hayes and (Peter) Bulandr — they're fast, they get up field. They've got depth. They're all good, and they all can run. They play with an edge. ... They've got a good shot [in the playoffs]. When you can play defense and special teams, you've got a shot to beat anybody. And that's what they do. ... In our conference, they've dominated this year like few have ever dominated."

To be clear, NO team in the Stagg Bowl era has ever dominated the CCIW the way NCC has this year. That includes Augie 4peat National Championship run. We are witnessing something unique.

Great article and comments both by Coach Swider and Bulandr.

Fellow CCIW posters -

Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving!

Enjoy all of the football and turkey you can. Diets are for the new year anyway.

USee

I should clarify (as I did on the NCAC board) that Mike Swider would like nothing better than for NCC to lose badly on Saturday. And selfishly, while I root for the CCIW, I wouldn't mind either. We don't need a Red version of the Purple power in our own conference.

Maybe we need to borrow some of the Wabash propaganda??

I might add that while I appreciate the support of some of you CCIW red weanies over on the NCAC board my broader hope is that the fleas of a thousand camels infest your armpits.

Hey, Always A Titan and I are GREEN weenies, thank you very much!

Though, this season at least, I'm sure your 'good wishes' go to us as well! 8-)

If any season this is it for the CCIW to break through the purple mountain.  They are vunerable this year as evidenced by Benedictine  :o scoring on them.  Sorry Wabash :( for looking past you but just don't think you have what it takes to stop  the Naperville redbirds this year.

You forgot Wabash Always Fights and they have a great kick/punt returner.  That will make the difference.   8-)

I only saw 1 Wheaton game this year, the game in Naperville.  I had planned on meeting a buddy there, but he was running late.  Before the 1st quarter was even over, I texted:

"Don't bother.  This one's over... I feel like I'm watching Mount play"

I would agree that this NCC team is probably the best CCIW I've seen (since 1993... didn't start watching till then)

But to hear that coming from a source such as USEE, that's as high praise as it gets.

Dreams are a beautiful thing.  Keep saying it....over ...and over....and over...and over again.  Maybe this is the year.  But do you REALLY think it is?  Or are you just HOPING it is?

USEE & Mugsy, and any and all Wheaton posters can claim "this is the team".  Even Wheaton's vaunted coach (who LK respects immensely) can say it, but until you do it.......who really knows?

I think Wabash might have something to say about it, but if it turns out they don't, welcome to THE MACHINE.

Mr. Ypsi

s_s, I am neither a Wheaton nor an NCC supporter.  My d3photography.com bracket says NCC over UMU.  (I do have them losing to UWW in the Stagg, but reserve the right to change in the week-by-week pickems.)

Time will tell, but I honestly think you have a CCIW challenger.

(Admittedly, I honestly thought  IWU's defense would slow down, if not stop, UWW in 2009 - I was wrong. :P)

You guys have earned the right to be arrogant, but be careful.  "Pride goeth before a fall."  Neither you nor UWW has (so far, at least) ever matched Augie's FOUR straight Stagg titles - they went 2-8 this year.

Skunks,

Show me where anyone has claimed anything? Dont come in here stirring up trouble before it's due. There is a very good Wabash team NCC has to get past. If that happens you can judge for yourself. What I do know is that the team that wins this weekend in Crawfordsville will give Mt Union all it can handle. Doesn't mean they will win, but the winner of this game isn't far behind the purplepowers. I am very confident in that assessment.
