Thank you Pat. I know bits & pieces of the health incident but just wanted to see if there was any further news.  Hopefully he gets back soon.

Agreed. I was clarifying for emma17, really. I don't know much but I have reason to trust that he's well.

Thanks Pat- I do wish him the best.

I was also curious if 79 Jaybird's complementary post of Coach Swider was in reply to my earlier question where I asked if anyone knew, if during the post-game interview, Coach Swider had actually been asked if he was aware of the tie-breaker situation.  I am not questioning Coach Swider's abilities in any way at all, I am just curious if he addressed the actual question that has been debated on this board a bit.

Not a complete answer, but from yesterday...

Quick question and I'm sorry if I missed the answer in a prior post.

Does anyone know if Wheaton Coach Swider was asked after the game if he was aware of/thought about the tie breaker?

Not that I'm aware of.  But in his post game comments there was a clear statement that for the last 2 NCC drives they stepped back from their aggressive defensive game plan that was working so well.  Implication is Wheaton was opting for allowing the underneath passes to burn more time and protect the 3 TD lead.

Emma- I am friends with Coach Swider (Mrs Swider works with my hockey teammate's wife at Wheaton BC) so my message was reflecting coach Swider's personality and IMO, great coaching philosphy/attitude towards others.

Forget whether the coaches knew or didn't know. If I put myself into Coach Swider's shoes on Saturday the question I would ask is "What would I have done differently". Offensively, probably nothing. I agree with Q's assessment about the 4th and goal at the 1 in the 4th quarter. Kick the FG and make it a 3 score game. The only other thing on offense may have been to try and throw a deep pass off play action on one of the last 3 plays. Defensively, I likely would have loosened my coverage alignments like they did on that last drive, however, once they got into the redzone (keep in mind it was 35-14 and at the end of that drive there was about 2.30 to play) I would have changed it up and blitzed and been much more aggressive to try and force a mistake. Because if you get beat for a TD in that situation, it is still a 2 score game and the odds of 2 additional scores against you in that situation are so incredibly stacked against NCC that there is virtually no downside to trying to make something happen.

So all in all, I think there were some decisions late that could have made an impact on the point spread but it certainly wasn't a foregone conclusion. I don't think I would have done anything different until the last 2:30 of the game when the odds were stacked in my favor.

Hmmm.
Anyway I personally think it's too bad any coach would be put in a situation where they knew they had to run the score up/maintain a large lead to improve their playoff chances. I don't have the answer on the best alternative tie-breaker, but I'm sure there are better options.
In support of promoting good sportsmanship and attention to detail, perhaps compare each team's:
-Total # penalties
-Total turnovers

Sorry USee, my post was meant to be in reply to 79 Jaybird.

Alternative tiebreaker options that I would go for:
1. Which team's coach has the longest hair (combine with D-Coordinator, if you'd like)?
2. Which team's coach has the most son's playing for him?

good idea's Mugsy. Other options:

Which team's coach can bench press their body weight the most times?
Which team's mascot does not include a color in the name?
Which school was founded first?

As for player of the year and all conference honors, there are going to be some tough decisions.

I could see a co-POY on offense with Scottie Williams and Jordan Roberts. Could also be Mark Hiben, it really depends on who Swider nominates but both are worthy.

Defensively, you have to look at a guy like Josh Mitchell or Joey Michals. Those guys have been pretty consistent all year. I can't think of any other super standouts on defense.

Quote from: Mugsy on November 04, 2012, 06:03:20 PMIt is really weird that there isn't a defensive player who stands out.

The best defensive player I've seen this season is LB Erik Westerberg of Augustana.

I think Brandon Dykstra, NT, for Wheaton has been dominant this year. 33 tackles, 8.4 tackles for loss and 4 sacks for a nose guard in a 5-2 scheme is ridiculous.

In recent weeks he has made some plays all the way out to the sideline from a nose guard position.  His mobility for a very big man is impressive.

Yeah, I was looking at his stats when trying to discern who are the stand-out defensive players.  He has the stats.  I haven't seen him play so I can't say beyond that.
