Unfortunately, I will not be in town this weekend to see the winless NP Vikings host the undefeated Comets of Olivet College.  Regarding the latter, I looked at their schedule, and noticed that Calvin was missing.  Calvin does not  sponsor football.  Anyone know when it dropped the sport?

I don't think Calvin has ever had football. As a CRC school with feeders from CRC private high schools there was very little demand for it. Though Dordt, Calvin's cousin over in Iowa, recently added football. Though they are NAIA.

To the best of my knowledge, they have NEVER had football (but persistent rumors have them adopting it sometime in the future).

They are to the MIAA what Marquette is to the Big East  :)

Which is fine. I don't think anyone would argue that Calvin or Marquette are not great institutions with great athletic teams, just no fb.

As always, NPU home games are webcast live this season, Mark. The Olivet @ NPU game on Saturday will be no exception. I trust that, wherever you will be this weekend, you'll have a computer with you.  ;)

Some of those feeder schools have football (Grand Rapids Christian, Calvin Christian, Holland Christian, South Christian, etc.), so that's not a reason why Calvin doesn't have it. In fact, Calvin sometimes loses out on successfully recruiting athletes at those feeder schools, because they want to play football in college.

USee---

You reference a lot of **** that happened LAST year, but the problem is he won the awards for his CURRENT performance. You say you agree he deserves the award, but yet you seem to make a conscious effort to trivialize his accomplishments. Forgive me but this seems contradictory. I just don't understand your approach in this case.

Oldnuthin & USee----

I'm sorry, but I think any D3 college kid who hits 24 of 26 pass attempts, throws for 4 TDs, and runs for another TD has had a hell of a day whether that accomplishment has been attained against the #1 team in the country or the #150 team. And it doesn't matter whether the kid is wearing a red jersey, an orange one, a purple one, or a flamin' pink one. Its time to acknowledge the fact that 24 of 26 doesn't suck even if you and i are playing defense.  :)

Apparently Mrs. Bofforington's  5th grade English class was in composition not comprehension.Did you read Usee's post?He used the words impressive and impressed to describe Mr. Stanek's play. He also pointed out correctly, that Mr. Stanek has struggled in the big games in prior years. No derision for his play this week. I agreed because the facts bear out Usee's statement. While Usee correctly states that he threw 3 picks in the second half, he threw 5 picks for the game. My reading, and in my opinion any unbiased reading of the post boils down to this: Nice game this week, lets see if he can do it against top notch competition this year. to imply that the post was a knock on his play from this past weekend is ludacris.

Mrs. Bufforfington also thinks that you have confused the rapper Ludacris with the fact that your assertions are ludicrous.  :)   :-[   ;D

Glad to be of service Izzy.   :)
To his credit, oldnuthin acknowledged his error.

The reason for my rebuke of the comments by USee and oldnuthin was that I simply posted a congrats to NCC's Spencer Stanek on his being named Offensive Player Of The Week 2 weeks in a row, and I did not and still do not understand why anyone felt it necessary to come with a "ya, but, back in 2010 he screwed this up and back in 2012 he screwed that up." I wasn't talking about 2010 or 2012, I was talking about now.
I know there was also some praise of Mr. Stanek included, but why the need to be negative in any regard?

Tell me that if another poster posted a congrats to a player on the team he roots for, and I went in and said "ya but last year he couldn't even get his team in the playoffs" or something similar, that said poster wouldn't also feel angst, and a subsequent need for rebuttal.  ;)
I think enough has been said on this issue.

AndOne,

I posted my opinion and stated facts about the past.  I took the opportunity you provided to advance the conversation.  This is a chat room I believe.  My post had little to do with your post other than to provide a transition to a thought I considered important enough to share.  What was negative about what I posted? What wasn't factual? I think Stanek is a great QB but in my opinion the jury is still out on how great largely because he has a history of turning it over down the stretch in big games.  Any argument that Jordan Roberts outplayed him head to head last year? This year we get a rematch and we get to see Gallik v Stanek.  With disappointment comes opportunity. Stanek is off to his best start. NCC fans hope it will continue.

I am an intentional Luddite, Greg.  I will be attending the Miami of Ohio @ Illinois football game sans laptop and smartphone in a visit with my son, and then be taken to some Beatle cover band performance.

Spot on in your statement, Professor Sager.  Just take a look at the EC Roster over the past 5 or 6 seasons - loaded with West Michigan kids.  There is certainly quite a bit of talent in that region...East Grand Rapids, Kentwood, Hastings, etc.

Part of that pipeline was reinforced when Lester arrived (WMU grad), when Coach Adam took over recruiting coordinator (former GVSU staffer), and when former O-Line coach Ron Tyner came on board (West Michigan kid with strong ties to the coaches back in the mitten).  But that connection has always been an active part of the EC football recruiting vision.

The other factor is the quality of options in that region.  Growing up in West Michigan myself and coming out of a traditionally strong football program, the CCIW (and the quality of competition and recognition that comes with it) was a much more attractive D3 draw than staying in-state (Hope, Alma, Adrian, Albion, Olivet).

The D2s, however, remain a strong presence in the Great Lakes state (Ferris, Wayne St, Saginaw, Grand Valley).

Calvin, a well-regarded academic institution, (which has some top-flight programs already in its own right...V-Ball, most notably) could have an impact in keeping some of that football talent closer to home.
It's a Great Day to be a Jay!

Looking forward to the IWU-Hope game tomorrow, and seeing the current addition of the Titans first hand.  It's gonna be hot -- 85 or so, with rain later in the day.

New facilities at IWU are really great -- new apartments for upperclassmen, renovations in Memorial Center / DugOut, but especially the new classrooms, teaching spaces and seminar rooms in the new State Farm Hall.  Really great and with all the needed up-to-date bells and whistles.  IWU students are lucky indeed -- a HUGE improvement over the old Shaw Hall where most of us oldies had our classes, back in the day.  Beecher Street in front of Magill Hall now closed, so that will be greened over and made to extend the Quad further north, between the new State Farm Hall and the dorm complex/block that includes Magill, Dolan (previously Franklin), Harriett Hall, and Dobbs.  Next big big project likely to be a new Center for Performing Arts, including a new key theatre for the Drama School.  McPherson has to last a few years more.

Good luck to all the CCIW teams this week.  The conference race is about to begin.
