Just for giggles, here's what Ken Massey's HAL 9000 supercomputer currently has to say about CCIW football, vis-a-vis where our teams rank among the 245 football teams in D3:

  11. North Central
  19. Wheaton
  41. Illinois Wesleyan
  84. Augustana
134. Elmhurst
150. Carthage
161. Millikin
177. North Park

Massey projections for Saturday's games:

North Central 45, North Park 6 (100% probability of a NCC win)
Wheaton 35, Elmhurst 7 (99% probability of a WC win)
Illinois Wesleyan 24, Carthage 7 (90% probability of an IWU win)
Augustana 34, Millikin 24 (78% probability of an AC win)

Massey currently has Wheaton beating Illinois Wesleyan in Week 8, 27-21 (67% probability), North Central beating Illinois Wesleyan in Week 9, 31-17 (85% probability), and North Central beating Wheaton for the CCIW title and the Little Brass Bell in Week 10, 31-27 (64% probability).

I love this system!   ;D

Thank you Greg- Yes, my original thoughts were focused on this weekend's EC/WC matchup.  IMO, Elmhurst is looking for some foundation offensively after last year's losses and to be more concerned with consistency vs. Thunder not the W or L end result.   Plus, McCully has not been friendly to Elmhurst similar to Bloomington.

My bad.  Reading is a skill I haven't quite mastered! You da man, GS!

Coming from a North Central alum, that's not surprising at all.  :o

Article on the CCIW's leading tackler, North Central middle LB Nick Slezak who has changed positions 3 times in his career at NCC.

Looks like good coaching to me!  ;)

It's ok CardinalAlum- No biggie.  I still haven't mastered 3 1/2 & 1 yr old's either.  May never will.  :P

I think Elmhurst relied on those graduated so heavily that now the "return to reality" has kicked in and somebody has to step up.  This is what I feared would happen similar to Carthage and the Dante Washington group.  I am not surprised this year has been a struggle for Elmhurst.  They can either continue to fall back to the middle of the pack like Carthage did  or somebody has to lead the team on both O and D.  Who's that going be EC?

We need to make sure we revisit this post after the 2nd week in November. Very Interesting...can't say that it sounds too far off. A couple plays each game would turn the predicted outcomes. Seems reasonable.

Massey is not always correct but it does make  for interesting reading. I need to check and see if Bethel is favored this week-end as well. :)

Pretty good read on Clyde Hughes' Around the Nation clip about John Thorne and the Cardinals manual.  I know the CCIW has a few exceptional coaches (i.e. Thorne, Swider, etc) that can share in this idea of being a man more concerned about faith, family, and academics.

I agree with this perspective.  Case in point - North Park beat Carthage in a game where the Park was clearly the better team.  Yet Massey rates Carthage 27 spots higher.

Massey has a great model but I am a bit skeptical of the output from a sample of 5-6 football games per team and very limited conference play/common opponents.  It's the same degree of rigor that we'd expect from their mid-December or very early January basketball rankings.

IWU gets LB Connor Klein back today (concussion).
This is a big game for IWU. They need to take control early and make a statement. Another great game by the offense to compliment that tough D will set the stage for the next two weeks.
