A rather scary, sometimes frustrating, in-the-end glorious afternoon for our Titans @ Tucci @ Wilder Field this afternoon.  I walked the sidelines in a nervous fit most of the game.  Only really happy, assured after the Stinde touchdown with about 2 minutes to go.

To me the key was great Titan D making plays, and containing Roberts.  As has been mentioned, we tried many ways to give the game to them -- three INTs, two pass interference flags in the endzone, the fumbled kickoff, and the roughing penalty out-of-bounds just before the half that allowed the 50+ yard field goal as time expired, thanks to a great West-to-East wind for WC's kicker.  And, if the truth be known, Stinde almost fumbled the pitch on the game winning 22 yard touchdown run.  I was standing in the SW corner, right next to the endzone, as the trickeration, mis-direction play let TJ get the ball on the pitch and get into the endzone.  Some great blocking by IWU's downfield people.  Earlier, Musselman had a big day and it seemed no one in the WC secondary could cover him.  He made several, big key catches, not least the one on the fourth down conversion.  Devonte Jones worked hard all day, earning ever single yard he made.  Both defences very good against the run.

A great win for the Titans-- getting rid of some of the demons from last year's 0-4 ending, the last time we played Wheaton.  Being 7-0 is sweet, moving up the rankings, and getting a great win, building additional confidence going into the game with North Central next week also @Tucci.  It will be another HUGE test for the Titans.  (I see NCC is up 55-zip in the 4th Q vs. CC).

IWU, the seniors, passed the test today,even with all the mistakes and penalties.  Wheaton is a very good team and just couldn't quite get over the hump, just couldn't quite put it together in the second half against a very tenacious IWU defense that said, today, we are not losing.  To beat NCC next week, can't afford those penalties and those TOs.  I believe IWU will have to play close to error free to beat NCC next week.

Really think containing and sacking Roberts (officially 2 sacks, but I think there were more), keeping his run total way down, was the key to the game. He moved the ball down the field very easily in the first series in the first Q, but after that, the Titans really gave him a very hard time running, and built some pressure, a few sacks on him in the second half.  Titans got three fumble recoveries.

My warm congrats to Coach Eash and all the Titans for this big big win.  Keep it rolling . . . 7-0 feels mighty good.

Awfully quiet with such a big game this weekend.   Predictions on the Wheatie-Weenie game?  I'm going to say Wheaties win this one by 10 on the road.  Nothing but a gut feeling here.

Ok, ok, so I guess I'll keep my day job!   Complete domination by the Cards today.  What the heck happened to the Carthage program?   They were not good.

Next up, undefeated NCC 7-0 4-0 vs. undefeated IWU 7-0 4-0.

NPU vs. AC night game.

I had IWU 24 WC 21,  So wasn't too far off, Final 30-19.

It was 23-19 IWU up 'til the final winning TD by TJ Stinde with about 2 minutes to go.  If you see that play on the tape, watch the downfield blocking . . . and also watch Stinde bobble the ball before securing it, then running to the endzone for the winning 22 yard clinching TD.  A great misdirection play, a gutsy call.

Next week NCC vs. IWU should be a great match-up as well -- then WC vs. NCC the week after.

Still a lot of football to be played -- IWU has to face Augie @RI and EC @Tucci for Senior Day, final day of the season.  There's no easy route to the CCIW crown.

Seems if a Wheaton plans on making anything happen this season, players have to show up. They lose of Hiben which is huge, and injuries to WR Roberts and Houck doesn't help. Now today, Velling and Kemp didn't play. Last time I check, it takes 11 guys playing for 60 minutes. Solid O-line means pound the rock, cause that seems to be the only thing showing up.

Here is the on-demand video of the IWU/Wheaton game - http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/iwu.portal#

The Titans really made some big plays in the final 11:00 to win this game...

* (2:36:40) Wheaton ball, 3rd & goal from IWU 2 with 10:50 to play - Jeff Jerome strips Jesse Geary and Paul Panno recovers the fumble.

* (2:39:30) IWU ball, 10:44 to go, 3rd & 9 from own 6 - Rob Gallik connects with Tate Musselman for 18 yards and a 1st down.

* (2:41:10) IWU ball, 2nd & 6 from IWU 28 - Devonte Jones rushes for 10 yards and a 1st down.

* (2:44:50) IWU ball, 3rd & 9 from Wheaton 49 - Rob Gallik scrambles, connects with Alex Garvey for 10 yards and a 1st down.

* (2:46:15) IWU ball, 2nd & 12 from Wheaton 41 - Sean Conley rushes for 14 yards and a 1st down.

* (2:48:30) IWU ball, 3rd & 5 from Wheaton 22 - T.J. Stinde rushes for a 22-yard TD (2:34 to play)

All of the players I mention above, except Jeff Jerome, are seniors.

The play call on the Stinde TD was perfect.

Really enjoyed watch both Wheaton and IWU game today, each team played tough all day, as some has already mentioned, it was the big plays and stops by IWU that was the difference today. Again, good game by both teams.

Mr. Ypsi

Anyone KNOW for sure: Stinde's TD that iced the game, was that a Plan B back-up before Gallik is sacked, or was that a 'fake out' 'Gallik is passing, no he's pitching'.  The downfield blocking was so excellent that I suspect the latter, but I couldn't decide for sure.  Whichever, it was a thing of beauty, and I'm PM'ing Pat for 'Play of the Week' consideration. ;D

North Park leads Augie in the 4th Q.  Amazing.

That play was definitely designed that way.  Really great play-calling during that entire drive.   Never overly risky but not predictable.

I feel like the difference between IWU and Wheaton is IWU's receiving core.  Without Hiben and Grayson Roberts, IWU has three weapons better than anyone Wheaton had in uniform.

Clearly a designed play, with misdirection, then the pitch, which almost was fumbled.  Downfield blocking, sealing off the corner, was a thing of beauty.  It all happened right in front of me as I was standing on the sideline, just on the corner of the SW endzone.   Stinde was very open getting the pitch, then wasn't hit until about the 2-3 yard line, and got in through momentum and strength.  Agree on the drive, good play calling and ball protection.  Stinde and Jones held on tight.

Agree also on the IWU receivers.  They are a very talented and strong group this season.  Musselman was one of the overall keys to IWU's offensive success today, without doubt.  IWU was lucky to survive 3 INTs, two pass interference calls in the endzone, the penalty at the end of the first half allowing the FG, and the fumbled kickoff return play.  Seven big errors.  Defence held and got the ball back on the three fumble recoveries, several saves, holds in the Red Zone.

Final from Rock Island, according to Live Stats: North Park 45, Augie 35.  North Park had 504 total yards of offense.  TD Conway was 17-33 for 345 yards and 3 TDs, while Magwood gained 167 on the ground.  North Park stopped Augie on the NP 1 when time expired.

Amazing,  NPU 45 AC 35.  My hat is off to NPU for winning their second CCIW game this season!   And to win at Rock Island.

Greg Sager, somewhere, is smiling.

Right now Greg is handling PA duties at the North Park-North Central men's soccer contest, but he will be overjoyed at the result.
