GoThunder-you've never met anybody that hasn't been recruited?  Really?
Most of our team was recruited, but there were at least 4-6 guys annually who either decided to play as a walk on, and/or joined because of a friend.
I met Coach Rucks for the first time at the UWW/St.John's game when he talked with Pat Coleman and me prior to the game.  He is a great guy and quite a character!   ;D
He seems like a guy that you WANT to play for and would do anything he could for his players.
I agree with some earlier posters.. What's with all these "touchy" subjects with race, neighborhoods, etc.???  Football is a sport where all 11 guys have to work together, otherwise the play won't work.. better yet the TEAM won't work.
As for the Stagg Bowl this afternoon.  I think UWW is giving a great heart effort and all MUC can handle.  It's appearing more and more that MUC is just a little too strong.  I'm still hoping (with 4 seconds left) UWW can pull off a miracle.
Hopefully it's a CCIW team on ESPN next year.
Last- for the record, I am NOT a fan of Instant/Video Replay for the Stagg Bowl.  To me, it alters the flavor of D-3 since we don't have it during the regular season.

I posted this over on the OAC board.

The best line of the year: "USC is the Mount Union of Division I football..."

This one said by the halftime show hosts during the Stagg Bowl while discussing USC and their chances for a 3rd straight Championship.

Interesting...

ESPN also named Ken Anderson as the top NFL player from a D3 school at halftime. I won't bother splitting hairs over the fact that there was no D3 when Anderson was at Augie. They also had Pete Metzelaars of Wabash in the top five. I remember him more for almost single-handedly beating an outstanding Augie hoops team in the quarterfinals of the 1982 D3 tournament.

They also didn't name Paul Warfield on the team of players that didn't play DivI football. He played at Cap.

Go Thunder,

Although I doubt he will, Garcon (or Kmic, for that matter) definitely can transfer to D1; and yes, he'd have to sit out a year.

I'm not sure whether bigger schools can actively recruit him, however.

Red Reign

To my understanding if you transfer from d-III to and d-I school you do not have to sit out, only if you transfer from and d-I to a d-I. For example, tyke spencer, if he doesn't have to sit out a year why should someone that plays up from a smaller division have to, also that goes with jnco transfers.

Also, I did not hear the pregame does anyone know the d3football all-americans from the CCIW?

Unless they've changed the rule. He'd have to sit out. When  hoops player Kevin Skillett transferred from Augie to Iowa in 1991 he had to sit out a year. The NCAA may have changed the rule, but I don't think so.

Mr. Ypsi

If I recall correctly, if you transfer UP (or, as Pat would say, DOWN), you sit.  If the reverse, you're eligible immediately.

augievike

I know i am a homer with this statement, but i think it is kinda odd that ESPN doesn't mention that Augie is the only school that  has won 4 straight championships in football any division.  They compare USC to Mt. Union but i think they should be more talked about like Augie.  Mt Union is very good dont' get me wrong but even they have not been able to duplicate the feat.  Any thoughts?

jdean

No slight intended I'm sure. Its probably all about the timing. If Mount's run had been 20 years ago and Augie's 4 in a row in the late 90's/early 2000's then they probably would have said Augie. Anyone who knows D3 football understands what a feat the four in a row was.

congrats to cciw folks in the aztec bowl:

lenny radtke had a pick for a TD to go w a couple sacks and 4 tackles
andrew day kicked 6 xtra pts and a fg

AugieVike--I thought the ESPN crew was horrible, and acted as though they have been covering D-3 sports all year.  To me, it just wasn't a good fix having 2 "big whigs" calling a game that they clearly had no background info on.
Augie's 4 straight Nat'l Championships is one of the most impressive things ever in football, at any level.  4 years unbeaten is remarkable.
On the flipside, I thought the D-3 crew on the livestream was GREAT!  Pat, Pat, and Keith were informative, exciting, and do a great job. :D
I also thought it was cruel for ESPN to not show the trophy presentation/speeches after the game like the IHSA does.  ESPN decided to go straight to a basketball game.  As if anybody cared about the basketball game, show us the post-game awards. ???
