Does anyone have an explanation for why Wheaton went for it on 4th and 1, looking at about a 33 yard field goal down 2 with 5:00 and change left?  Whether it was a poor spot or not, the call makes no sense to me. Take the lead. It was little more than a chip shot.

Had 2 blocked vs Benedictine and first PAT blocked against JCU. Zero confidence in the FG operation (which was verified in the end of game sequence). I thought they should have kicked it as well regardless.

I just listened to the podcast and they played an audio clip of an interview with Mark Myers, JCU QB, where he said "We were surprised they came out in cover 2, we weren't expecting that and definitely had to make some adjustments...". Really? Surprised? Wheaton has played cover 2 in EVERY game and is their base defense. Did JCU not look at the film? That makes absolutely no sense to me. I am not sure which films they get but the only game I remember anything other than cover 2 was Elmhurst.

I think they get the films of the last three games (I know that's why Whitewater does in the playoffs).

The last three played or last three regular season?

I find easily offended people rather offensive!

Wheaton's kicking game hasn't been very good this year.  I'm sure that played into the decision.

This is from the postgame news conference. Arth continues on to talk more about what they saw, which was not to say that they never saw Cover-2.

After listening to that I understand what's going on. Thanks Pat.

I'm intrigued. The tape they had showed different looks? Wheaton rolls a lot out of that shell, right? Did he mean they just stayed in straight cover-two?

USee

No it means he was confused.  Wheaton substituted a DT for an extra safety so they could match up.  With 3 safeties, 2 corners and 4 Lbs they played their normal 3-4 cover 2.  They had a stand up LB as the DE and the extra safety was an OlB.  If JCU identified the safeties by jersey number Myers could have thought it was cover 3 since one of the usual deep safeties was actually lined up at LB which resembles a cover 3 safety.  All that means Myers probably doesn't read coverages very much because it isn't nearly as confusing as how I just explained it.

Perfect explanation.  I thought it was a brilliant defensive scheme that clearly worked very well.  First couple series I was confused myself when only seeing 3 Dlinemen on the field.

Any far too early predictions for how the CCIW will shake-out in 2015?

Based on what I saw this year I would put the early predictions like this:

Wheaton
North Central

IWU

Elmhurst
Augie
Carthage
North Park

Millikin

I can see a tight band between Elmhurst, Augie, Carthage, and NPU for 4th place and I think IWU is separated from Wheaton and NCC a little but also a little ahead of the other group. Millikin is in disarray to me.
