Vikes35-- great points. Yes I don't know what to say/do for North Park in the football world.
Elmhurst usually gets 5-10 kids from the south suburbs Oak Forest, Midlothian, Tinley Park, Evergreen Park, etc. some Southern Catholic Schools.
As Vikes35 pointed out, many larger schools Lockport, Stevenson, the larger DUPage Valley Conf. teams have their kids go D-1 or D 1 AA. Irish21 and I were discussing this over the weekend. Many will go to a large D-1 school and ride the pines for 2-3 years. Why not go D-3 and play right away??
Because its D3!!! ::)

Zorbadagreek, in regards to the karma thing... I agree  I was at +1 then 0 and now all of sudden -3??  Oh well, I look at what's written as opposed to the karma thing.
"because it's D-3"
I know D-3 is not D-1 by many standards, but there is something special about D-3 Athletics.
Chicago  D-3 is the only Big 10 school to have a winning record against Michigan  AA Stagg and you know about the history with this school.
Augustana- I believe the only school at any level to win that many Nat'l Champs in a row.
Some of the rivalries are older than some D-1 existences. ( football programs)
There are many special attributes for D-3.  The only thing D-3 doesn't have is National Coverage, Money, and the Nat'l Recognition.
Frankly, if you ask me.. I can do without those.  ;D

Cardinal alum tahnks, youre awesome. 79jaybird, In no way did I mean to put down d3. I myself played and coach in the conference. CCIW IS the big 10 of div.3. What I did mean is that athletes in general will take a d1 school over a d3 school anyday of the week, especially when there is tuition money involved.. No matter what the tradition is. d3 athletics are sports in its most pure form. Sorry if i misspoke, i would never put down d3...;D

Zorba i understand now and agree with you 100%  I played 2 years at Elmhurst and I'm still involved as the radio voice.  You can't beat it.  Kids - local kids having fun playing out their dreams.
Agreed that given a choice and with $$ to boot, most will go D-1 over D-3

i noticed that North Central's roster doesnt contain many players from the south suburbs.....is this a trend within the CCIW? it seems like the south burbs have some good HS teams (joliet catholic, morris, lincoln way, bolingbrook, etc.)......why arent many players going to D3 CCIW schools?

I believe it is a trend throughout the CCIW.  When I was in high school only Augie and NCC showed interest to anyone at our school.  Many guys could have gone on and played.  Few do and others go to jjc or big schools to party.  Thorne was a coach at  JT so I don't understand why he wouldn't try to get more guys from the area.

Not every guy is just football either.  Guys go on to do other sports.   Same could be said for everywhere too about those guys who could have gone on to be stars but don't go anywhere.

I think we should get rid of the karma. Some ja*off is taking a power trip. i lost another point for absolutely no reason. Here take a few more off, some ones a jerk!!!! >:(

Zorba-- It could be some fool from the D3hoops board that is messing with people's Karma.  I think that is how I went from 0 to -3.   I can give you a karma point after 1 pm today because of the duplicate karma action.. I think you have to wait 18 hours or so.
In regards to the topic of choosing schools..  I think recruiters and coaches have their preferences as to which confs. they look to firsthand.  Unfortunately, this might alienate/intimidate a conference to the point where they might not want to go to your school.
I know a couple of friends who were 3x's the football player I was, didn't want to go to EC/IWU/NC  because Augustana was in the conf. and is perennially strong.  He ended up going to Simpson in the IIAC.
Does anybody have a stat/figure that shows the alltime record(s) of CCIW vs. MIAA opponents?

As far as recruiting goes, let's not forget how difficult college football can be.  If you had some talent in high school, but have a more laid back attitude, maybe you want to hang up the pads after high school (ie high school football was fun but don't want to pursue it).  Also, confidence may be another issue.  You may not think you are the right size or talent for the position you played in high school when making the jump up to college ball.  It is difficult enough to find kids who are both talented enough and want to play seriously, not to mention getting them to come to your school.

matblake:
Good comments.  Indeed those are among the many reasons.  I've always encouraged h.s. players to really think about all those parameters.  Even at the DIII level, there are some players who were good in h.s. yet not good enough to make the next level, even if at the small college divisions.  Aside from what you mention, perseverence, dedication, desire, etc.,etc. play an important part as does the academic parameters for one's longterm career goals in choosing a school and whether or not to continue their football career.   In addition, regarding the latter, certainly such perhaps seemingly insignificant factors are the #'s game (i.e. how many upper classmen-and recruits too-at your position, the school campus itself, etc. play a part).  Also, size doesn't always matter 100%, yet it also depends on what position a potential recruit would like to play and where his talents are seen by the coachinig staff in contributing, either eventually or sooner.   The bottom line is that if one decides to continue, they should be ready and willing to make the sacrifices to participate, hopefully achieve their individuals goals, yet be realistic as to the time frame that might take to do so (as well as it might not turn out exactly how they would hope).  Just thought I'd add some additional comments to the discussion.

Good thoughts formerd3db.  Thanks for jumping in.

Another important thing to remember is that most recruits are 17 or 18 years old.  Most have not had a tremendous amount of life experience and consequently make decisions on a more emotional level.  When I think back to some of the decisions I made at that age........ugh!  Just to be clear that I am not trashing recruits, I wish that I still had that spark of exuberance that teens seem to all have.

Also with Division III recruiting you can never completely ignore the money issue.  Some people have to make the choice between in-state public school tuition and hanging up the pads or playing football and having $60,000 (or more) worth of debt following you around.  Not an easy choice for anyone.
