Markerickson,
Incidently, can you name the last time they started 2-0, without looking it up?  Although it was probably posted in todays program...

I know it was probably 1979 at best, because they haven't even won more than 2 games since then!

On North Park football..... ;D

Well it definitely wasn't 1979 because they opened that season with a loss at Dubuque before winning their next four games and losing their last four.

There might have been at least once under Tim Rucks that they started 2 and 0 in the early nineties.

The last time I remember was the 1971 team that started 3 and 0 beating Millikin, North Central and Augustana (Millikin and Augie they haven't beaten since), and then got plastered at Elmhurst 44-6 and finished the season four and five.

Good trivia question, though.

I am determined to be wise, but this was beyond me.

UW-Eau Claire is a Top 25 team right now too, so it's not a big stretch.

By the way, for Augustana fans, a photo gallery of today's game.

Well, interesting.  Wesleyan getting blanked is not what I'd expected.  Carthage is about right.  Wheaton a little less than I thought.  Augie's D looks permeable.  Looks like an interesting year.

It seems like maybe the CCIW is in a down year.  Anyone else feel the same way?

But I diverge from present day due to sheer of non-conference boredom. What is this from Hugh J about NCC stealing signals last year?  An interesting concept, but that doesn't change the fact that the Augie's offense got handled in that game.  Hugh, it looks from this week's scores that Augie's D might be in trouble without DeGeorge there... could it simply be talent? What do you think about Augie THIS year?

Mr. Prikkel,
Thanks for the info...

My question to markerikson was kind of a snipe when I realized he was basically calling me a CCIW football moron because of this very question.  Problem is I'm not even sure he knows the answer either.  If some one as close to the NPU program as you isn't completely sure, then it's crazy for him to mention I need more perspective for a question he can't answer himself.

couchqb,

I had IWU losing by at least 17 in my CCIW Pick Em'...  UW Eau-Claire is a tough team.

I kinda made similar comments about the CCIW in general after last weeks results.  Overall, the CCIW hasn't been that impressive in the non-conference schedule - at least not as impressive as in past years.

Too early to tell, but so far IMO the CCIW looks down.  Maybe it's a function of all the off season hype about how competitive it was going to be, blah, blah, blah...

Obviously I'm not writing the season off by any means!  I don't feel like calculating it right now (too tired), but I'll bet the CCIW non-conference record so far in 05' is still very good.  Just not doing it as easily as thought...  We'll see if everyone improves next week.

One last comment regarding the Wheaton game before I shut it down for the night...

In an earlier post I sarcastically mentioned I thought the QB position was a one we didn't have to worry about this year... implying that perhaps we do.  In fairness to Chupp... While I'm sure he wouldn't be really happy with his performance based on the numbers, I didn't see the game or game film... it is obvious he has a much less experienced set of receivers than from a year ago.  Interceptions can be cause from incorrect routes by receivers, tipped balls, etc... without first hand knowledge otherwise, my comment may be premature.

I'm concerned with todays passing offense, but not having seen the game I have less basis for putting it all on Chupp's shoulders.

a couple of observations from reviewing the boxscore for the wheaton game:

chupp threw 4 int--thats not good
gustavus had 33 yds net rushing incl a 35 yd td run
wheaton took a knee on th gusavus 2 to end the game
looks like wind was a factor (20-25mph).

that said it looks like the wheaton D is much improved--they will need to be--we will see how much vs better competition. the wheaton offense is no where near where it has been the last few years. if the defense can be dominant the offense won't need to be as good. obviously it takes time to gel w a new set of recievers. problem is, we don't have much time w a cciw opener v ncc a few weeks away. I am concerned about the thunder but not yet worried.

I also am not surprised by IWU result. carthage seems to be grinding it out and ncc is cruising early.

Couchqb,

Augie has a good number of talented players...there's no doubt about that.  It must be hard at the same time to be a talented player when the defense switches every year.  Yeah the kids will have to adjust and fit in but when defenses change every year I think it is hard to find a consistent spot.  And I was looking at the photo gallery from the game and what is with the defensive players wearing wristbands?!  Thats something I've never seen before.  As for this year, I don't know what to expect Augie to be like.  I can only hope that they do well but both sides of the ball need to be consistent, hard-nosed and just play smashmouth football.  I'm afraid that the wristbands will have people thinking instead of just reacting and playing football.  Thats my stand.  Their game against Central didnt say much about their team but maybe as the kids get used to the new defense they'll step it up.  As in the past, the games i think will be most challenging will be the Millikin, NCC, and Wheaton games.  I'd want to put carthage in there too but considering augie was the only team last year to beat them...cough cough...shut them out, I think augie will beat them again.

In response to your question on uniforms. Carthage is sporting a new look on the road this year. One of the nicest looking uniform designs I've seen. You will get a chance to see em as Carthage travels to NCC this season.

Although the Redmen have played 2 close games so far this year, the Redmen Nation are all happy with a 2-0 start. Both games are come from behind efforts which shows me Carthage has the will to win and the determination and ability to getter done!

Anyone have any insight on that Carthage Lakeland game?

Wrap up of the NCC game.  It looks like NCC gave up some late scores... I'm assuming it was on the second string defense.

Basically, NCC threw the ball all over the field.

Both Kniss and Spencer now hold career records in passing and receiving...they will each hold every NCC passing or receiving record by the end of the year...they may even have it by now.

I hope the defense comes together a little.  BU putting up even two TD's against the 1st D makes me unsettled.
