There's been some really bad officiating lately in the CCIW, IMO. With the score 26-7 in favor of Wheaton, the ball was snapped over Bowers head. He went to the ground trying to control it, but never did. Whistle blew inadvertently. As the play continued for a few more seconds, North Park definitely would have recovered and probably even scored. Hate to see such a blatantly bad call, even if it's in WC's favor. North Park had played tough to that point and that play was a turning point, all Wheaton from there. It could have cut the score to 14-26, that's a different ballgame.

Then in the IWU @ CC game, with the score 13-14 in favor of Carthage, on a 4th and 1, Bauer overthrew his intended receiver but the refs called a phantom PI on Carthage, giving them new life, and eventually the go-ahead score.

There are many more examples from the past few weeks as well.

Look, officiating isn't easy, I know that. But c'mon...

Coach Eash had a different take:

Bauer engineered an 86-yard, 11-play drive for the winning score. On fourth-and-one from Carthage's 26, Bauer faked a handoff to Shoemaker-Gilmore and lobbed a pass for tight end Andrew Apel. The pass went incomplete, but Carthage's Richard Motter was called for interference.

"We tried to sneak Andrew on the back side and they pulled him down," said Eash.

IMO the replay shows that the ball was catchable and the flag was probably justified, though I'm eagerly awaiting release of the skycam shot.   ;)

Given the ball was overthrown and the IWU TE needed to lay out to try reaching the ball, from what I see, he left his feet on his own power... he wasn't pushed. Yes the CC defender had his arm there, but that was to defend the pass, I still don't see a push. Also, given the lack of reaction from the IWU TE in terms of "asking/wanting" the call, I think he's as surprised as anyone a flag was thrown. Without a closer angle, it's hard to tell, but again, I see him diving for the ball, not being pushed...

I thought, at the time of the play, the call was horrible. Still do.

Made it to B-W for my first NCC football game since the loss to Whitewater in the 2010 quarterfinals. NCC up 29-0 late in the first quarter. I expected a blowout, but not like this. Carroll just got their first first down in 12 plays from scrimmage, but they've really hurt themselves with dumb penalties and an inability to cover deep seam routes over the middle (NCC's first 3 touchdowns came via that play).

56-0 NCC at halftime. Cardinals also recovered a kickoff to Carroll at about the Pioneer 24 and scored 2 plays later. I've never seen anything like it.

Augie6

In a battle of the offensively challenged, Augie beats NPU 13-7.  Augie misses a 24 yd FG, a 28 yd FG and turns it over on downs inside NPU's 10 yard line.  NPU returns those favors by throwing 3 INTs.  Really discouraging to see Augie continue to fall as a program.  This will be the 6th season in a row without a winning record, with a cumulative record of 24-36 (assuming they lose to Wheaton next week, which is a pretty safe bet).  Being somewhat optimistic coming in to the season based on the progress I saw last year, this season has been a huge disappointment.  It truly looks like this team gave up following the giveaway at Carthage.  They have not even remotely come close to playing a good game since then.  Offensively, they seem to be an absolute mess with a complete inability to get anything going in the running game.  13 points today against a team that was giving up an average of 37 coming in.  Two big stats that jump out at me are a season to date, 2.3 average yards per rush and a 53% completion rate.  That says a lot about their offensive ineffectiveness.  I know the comments coming from the program are that this is a young team.  That being said, it's not like the teams at the top of the conference are senior laden.  NCC has 4 seniors in the starting lineup.  I know Wheaton also has a lot coming back next year. Let's hope for a better season next year, but I don't have nearly the optimism I had for the program after last season.

Chirping about a 62-7 win over a winless team just seems unsportsmanlike, especially since I left at halftime. This idea of "unsportsmanlike," of course, coming from the biggest homer in basketball PA in the conference, if not the country, but still.

Also, too bummed out about the Cubs' bats falling silent and the pitching not coming through...

Mr. Ypsi

And I'm not about to come on here to brag about needing a late FG to beat Elmhurst (at HOME, no less).  All four games went about as most probably expected, so not much to talk about.  (Though I heard rumors that BYE beat the crap out of Wheaton! :o ;D)

Kinda looks like the CCIW will be (for the umpteenth year in a row, with rare exceptions): 1/2 NCC/Wheaton, 3 IWU, 4-8(now 9), everyone else.  I hope that Carroll will not become the perennial North Park of the 'Chicago Dark Ages'.

AndOne

I see no earthly reason why Wheaton shouldn't win its last two games, thus finishing with one loss on the season.
If so, will this get them into the playoffs?

Barring the extremely unlikely event of John Carroll knocking off the Purple Machine on November 12th, I think Wheaton would almost certainly be the 1st Pool C candidate for the North Region.  And if the North has EVER been completely shut out of Pool C, I certainly don't know which year.

But the official Regional Rankings come out this week (Wednesday?), that should clarify things a bit.

Pat Coleman

Looks like 2001 was the last time the North was blanked for Pool C and there were only four spots that year.
