He'll be going up against an incumbent who was the starting QB this past season as a freshman, so it looks as though Hunniford is transferring to a program where they're not just going to hand him the starting job.

It absolutely amazes me how anyone can blow so much money so quickly.

Yeah, but I think of two things. The first being that it's not nearly as much money as we think it is. I'd think at least half of his salary, and probably more, is going to taxes, agent, and lawyer fees.

And the second being, the reason we can't comprehend it is because it's easy to make the smart decision when it's not your money. I imagine it's easier to resist the allure of say, buying a flashy car when you're surrounded by people driving Subarus and Volvos. But when everyone is driving the latest tricked out thing, and needling you over you not doing that, it's harder.

Kevin Hart did a piece of standup that talks about how hard it was to hang out with people who have a lot of money, because you kind of get sucked into the vortex of spending like they do (his point was more that he makes significantly less than those people, which isn't necessarily the case with Shorts). I mean, just as an example, I imagine players hang out with each other somewhat frequently. Imagine the feeling of getting invited to some player's mansion, and then thinking. "Hey, they're always welcome to hang out in my modest, two-bedroom apartment."

I mean, this happens to us normal people all the time, right, just on a smaller scale. You have those friends who always want to go out to dinner, rather than come over and eat something you make, and you go along, and you spend 20 bucks here, 40 there. I suspect it's like that, but with more zeroes

The CPA firm I used to work for had a fair number of pro athletes as clients.  Lots of former Ohio St. and UNC players.  Even one former AL MVP.  I was amazed at the stuff those guys would spend money on.  More failed night clubs and restaurants than you could count.  The most intelligent thing I saw was a former NFL 1st round pick that invested a lot of his money by buying gas stations.  Don't know who told him to, but it was a great move.  He had a nice steady income stream for years to come.

No but I wouldn't bet against him. Also, if I'm a senior QB prospect, I'm thinking twice about enrolling at North Central, after what's happened the past two seasons. :-\ :-\

And, in addition to the 3 luxury pads many pro football and basketball players acquire, don't forget the stables of Porsches, Jags, Ferraris, and Lamborghinis many of them have. And that's not even to mention the $100K Platinum Escalade pro "starter" vehicle that the rookies drive.
And, of course, another big money drain for many (I didn't say ALL  :)) pro athletes, especially of the basketball and football variety, is the "social" drain of paying thousands and thousands of dollars in monthly support money to their 4 or 5 past partners and the 6 or 7 kids they fathered between their harem members!

Yes, it's called competition!  It makes everyone better when you're competing for a starting position every year.

I am guessing Justin Hunniford doesn't feel like it was competition. I bet, if he was really honest, he feels like he could have done just as well as Rutter if given the opportunity. May not be true, but it's usually how the player feels who started one year and was uprooted for someone else the next year without really being given a chance (per the players perspective)

Good commentary.  Unfortunately, that situation can and does happen at times i.e. where one is simply just not really given the opportunity, regardless of that player's perspective.

The shoulder surgery he had in the Spring made it tough to really compete for the starting job.  I'm a big fan of the kid and hope for the best for him. He gave his all.  Not much else you can ask.

CardinalAlum, your sig needs an update...  :D
Agreed... however... given what happened in round 2 of the playoffs, a Roger Maris-like asterisk may be appropriate next to said update  ;)

Thank you, both!  A couple of more Wheatie wins may have merited such an asterisk!

Congrats to my old teammate Ron Selesky, (NCC Class of "87) who was named Head Coach of the Cleveland Gladiators of the AFL.  Good Luck to Ron---a good teammate and a good guy!

For NCC posters - There was some discussion on the Edgy Tim boards, that Coach Thorne was leaving NCC to take a position on Tim Lester's staff at WMU.  Can anyone confirm this?
