I went to Winona and won a few championships there.  There dominate their conference winning it five out of the last six years.  I can attest that none of the WI D3 schools are remotely close to competiting with Winona.  Maybe they could compete with some of the bottom schools from that conf, but they would get spanked by the top 4 each year.
I have replied to this post 3 time now.  I don't know why they don't show up but I will try again.
5wide, have you ever heard of the Boarder War?  If I recall, the WIAC was 9-7 against those mighty D-II schools that you speak so highly of.  And if I remember, Winona St. was 0-2 in those games.  Care to give an explaination as to why they lost both games?  Also, who felt it in their best interest to not participate anymore in those games?  I'll give you a hint, it wasn't the WIAC.
I may not have much to say, but I'll say it anyway.

You could be talking about Collies  ;D
Fact remains, if the 11 players on the field don't execute, your team won't make the plays.
Has IWU ever played ISU in football?  And if so, anybody know their record?

Jaybird:

IWU has played ISU many times over the years. The rivalry started in 1887 and stopped in 1969.  Many years they played more than 1 game head to head. Another interested fact about IWU football is they used to play U of IL, Northwestern, and a couple of HS teams.

Augiedogie:  Very interesting.  I know Wilder Field is one of the oldest fields in the NCAA's.  I think it is the 4th or 5th oldest?  Football has always been very special down there.

jaybird, thought you would find the fact that Wheaton first played Elmhurst in 1921.  It's funny to look back and see some of the teams Wheaton played way back in the day.  The Chicago YMCA, Mount Morris, North Western (is this school what is now North Central?), and Northern Illinois Normal seemed to be staples of the Wheaton schedule in the early 1900's.  My personal favorite has to be the American College of PE from the late 20's to early 30's though.  Tried to do a search but couldn't find anything on ACPE.  Wonder if it went defunct or changed to something else. All of Wheatons records are in the Yearbook on pages 45-46.  This is the 2005 version so last years record is not included.  http://www.wheaton.edu/Athletics/football/Yearbook.pdf

Mat,
Apparently ACPE (previously the Bernarr Macfadden Institute) is now a part of DePaul University, with whom they affiliated (or by whom they were absorbed) in 1946.

Indeed guys, some of that collegiate football history is most interesting.  In regards to your region, even the College of Physicians and Surgeons (forerunner of the CCOM, the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine at Midwestern University) had a college football team back in the 1890's.  Some of the MIAA schools played Notre Dame, Michigan and Michigan State (the latter was in the MIAA back then) and even beat them on occasion (although rare!).  We'll have to check the records, but the North Western mentioned, may just have indeed been the present Northwestern.  Many times back then, the spelling of a college or university's name can be found in a variety of ways.

Anyway, interesting topic and thanks for sharing it.  These type of topics are always good for the "off-season" on these boards anyway :)!

Yes I have heard in the border war, and back in the early to mid 90's LaCrosse and Riverfalls used to give the MN D2 schools their money worth.  The reason they aren't played anymore goes to Winona.  When they went and played the University of North Dakota and saw the facilities and what it took to be a national power in D2.  From them on they stepped up funding (their stadium now boasts a skybox which is sold out for the next 4 seasons, as well as stadium seating for the fans) and recruited higher caliber players.  They now schedule 1AA and D2 teams only.  It made no sense for them to play a D3 school because even if they did win, it hurt their SOS, which is huge in determining who makes the national playoffs.

At this point, none of the UW schools could touch Winona, Concordia SP or Bemidji, the top 3 in the NSIC.  Winona is stacked with top level D2 players and has many players who received D1 scholarships transfer in.

HEY NORM, I LOST YOUR HAT! GO REDMEN!!!

matblake

Thanks dan, I can sleep at night now!

It is interesting to look at how most games were low scoring.  However, since the ball used to be much more round and was harder to pass I am sure the clock kept moving most of the game.  Wonder what they would have thought about Florida back in the 90's?

The only school with a winning record in the  Big 10 was  ???

U. of Chicago.  Yes, Chicago Maroons ( when they were in the Big 10) were the only school in the conf. to have a winning record vs. the Maize and Blue.

Marquette ( Sister's Alma Mater) had a football team back in the day.
Elmhurst's first year of football was 1920 and Wheaton/North Central/Benedictine Seminary were some of the schools they played.

I always enjoy going back in time and looking at how schools developed "through the years".

I think the Jacksonville Deaf Institute got revenge on the Red during the early 90's. :D
